Excessive superlatives! And double talk! I hope to bring him down to earth by the SKIN OF OUR TEETH, but meanwhile, I took the liberty of annotating his director's notes...) Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the greatest show on earth! (Ed. Fort Wayne!). Starring that world renowed circus Executive Director celebrity Phillip Colglazier, a direct descendant of P.T. Barnum! Fort Wayne civic Theatre (Ed. Phillip has been to Korea and his great grandfather did go to see the Barnum & Bailey Circus, but got caught sneaking in!). And featuring the largest marching band and the brightest circus stars of our generation ever assembled under one roof! (Ed. Eunice's 6-piece band is pretty good). For those of you who enjoy realistic drama beyond the circus, we present the star studded world premiere of DEATH AND THE MAIDEN performed without a net in the Fort Wayne Museum of Art for an exclusive limited engagement! (Ed. March 10, 11,12,18,19...and Sigourney Weaver is not in this cast!). And there's more great shows to come this season, including the greatest American comedy ever, THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH; the most down home musical ever to come from Broadway, PUMP BOYS & DINETTES; and the most heart throbbing story of all time starring 5 • count them 5 - beautiful Irish lassies in DANCING AT LUGHNASA. Wait until you hear this! Next year's line up - the best season in a hundred years! Five musicals! BRIGADOON ft, MAN OF LaMANCHA J5, TAFFETAS /3, MAMA'S TURN J3, and brought back by popular demand - JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT ft. Plus..j\gatha Christies'a most madden ing murder mystery, TOWARDS ZERO, the spellbinding court room drama, INHERIT THE WIND, and finally the play that touched the heart of a generation, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST! (Ed. Pretty much true!). All featuring either their original Broadway stars (Ed. No way!!) or upcoming stars who will be even better than the originals. (Ed. A sure bet!). By the way, February is the time to get excited about the Arts, and give gener ously to the Arts United Fund Drive. All they need to make the Arts prosper in Fort Wayne is a million dollars! (Ed. $1.2 million is the exact goal!). So, either one person gives a million dollars...or everybody chips in $6.41 eacH (Ed. We're still checking his math!). On behalf of the hundreds - no thousands of performers and tens of thousands of crew members, we welcome you to the sights and sounds and smells of the circus! . up for Jumbo! Look down for Tom Thumb! Look out for that Prince of Humbug himself; Mr. P.T. Barnum! And here he comes now...!

14 BAKNUM...The Story

- "Is This The Greatest Show On Earth?" The line is worthy of Phineas T. (for Taylor) Barnum (1810-1891) himself a failed Yankee peddler whose self- inspired penchant for razzle-dazzle and humbug turned him into a household name synonymous with American showmanship. Now he has been turned into a Broadway musical. Barnum was one of a kind, an anti-hero, a folk legend, but a con man people admired. P.T, labeled "the Shakespeare of modern advertising", built his reputation by giving the common man his money's worth - even if what he presented was not necessarily authentic. His attitude was, "There's a sucker born every minute!" This view bothered his wife, Chairy, as she was practical and pragmatic and even with their fights, they had a hot romance, sort of like the relationship between Tracy and Hepburn in the movies. Barnum was a man who wanted to bring color into people's lives and Chairy wanted him to live a nine-to-five life. P.T. Barnum was not able to duplicate his success "at the scam", to his role as husband. He and his wife rode out some rough seas as a couple and it is this relationship that is at the heart of BARNUM. "Barnum's my name and miracles are my game.", announces America's Prince of Humbug confidently at the beginning of BARNUM. He had a gift for creating illusions and dazzling the multitudes into seeing wonders where less credulous onlookers only wondered skeptically about what they were seeing. A triumph of stagecraft, BARNUM blends circus acts and Broadway skills with such dexterity that it becomes a captivating entertainment. In the tradition of the familiar ringmaster's announcement that the circus we're about to see is "for children of all ages", BARNUM delights us with its clowning and acrobatics as well as its singing and dancing. The show treats the episodes in P.T. Barnum's life as though they were circus acts, even though most of them deal with the relationship between the impresario and his wife, Chairy. The ringmaster grandiloquently announces each chapter in the story - from his early assembling of numerous fraudulent sideshow attractions to his partnership with circus man James A. Bailey. BARNUM is a musical about illusion, but there's no illusion in what it delivers: It's great fun! A;

"We have been fortunate to have seen first run plays in Chicago, New York, and London. When we have compared these plays with those we have seen at the Civic, we can honestly state that we have enjoyed the Civic's plays every bit as much as those seen in the other cities. When we compare the cost of seeing a play in New York with one at the Civic, need we say more?'
