Carproof, of London, Ontario, provides vehicle history reports to dealers, consumers and others in Canada, much in the same way that IHS-owned Carfax does in the U.S. IHS, a market-research company in Englewood, CO, bought Carfax as part of a $1.4 billion acquisition in 2013. IHS Automotive is based in suburban Detroit. “Like Carfax, Carproof is a high-growth business and gives IHS the opportunity to expand our vehicle history report services into Canada,” IHS CEO Jerre Stead said in a statement. “By combining the capabilities of Carproof and Carfax, we also will accelerate product development to better serve the needs of our customers.” Stead said the move gives IHS a “highly accretive revenue-growth and EBITDA-margin business” and creates space for future growth. IHS is scheduled to cover the details of the deal during their next earnings call, scheduled for January th 12 . In 2015-CY, fleet sales have returned to their historic norm, and have accounted for more than half of all vehicle sales in some country markets. Some OEMs, like Opel, have experienced double digit growth for the first time since the 2008-2010 recession. Opel, GM’s main European subsidiary, saw 10% growth over their 2014 numbers. Commercial vehicle sales have been the driving force behind this increase and is largely responsible for much of their market share growth in Europe, according to Ian Hucker, Opel’s executive director of sales. Fleet currently represents 50% of Opel’s business in Europe, and they plan to capitalize on that in the coming years by introducing twenty-nine new models between 2016 and 2020. In September 2015, the European new-vehicle market maintained a healthy pace as sales increased by 9.7 percent, according to JATO Dynamics. In particular, the European market strengthened because of solid demand in the UK, Italy, and Spain. Growth in Western Europe is offsetting Central and Eastern Europe’s weakness, so there are still some uncertainties that remain. Even with the uncertainties, the 2015 industry forecast is projecting an increase of 1.2% over last year. However, to watch the various configurations move toward completion on a single assembly line at the Kansas City Assembly Plant (KCAP) is to behold what may be the most complex vehicle assembly of a light-duty vehicle sold in the U.S. There are approximately 2,000 variations of the Transit built at KCAP, with over 3,500 different end parts, including 12 doors and more than 100 pieces of glass, and only the hood and left and right side fenders being the same on all variations. How all the parts converge with impressive precision on the assembly line demonstrates just how far Ford has evolved its founder's initial three principles to automate vehicle assembly with heavy machinery, work stations, and minimal movement of parts. Ford builds Transits at the plant using two shifts, including cargo vans, passenger wagons, chassis cabs, and cutaways. This is also the same plant that builds Ford’s popular F-150. KCAP is Ford's largest manufacturing facility in the world, covering 5.5 million square feet on 1,269 acres. The company significantly upgraded the plant in 2011 to support production of Transit and increased demand for the new F-150 with a $1.1 billion investment that included a 437,000-square-foot stamping facility that opened in 2012 and a 78,000-square-foot paint shop. The plant builds Transits in a customer-order-driven sequence known as a "natural blend order" that incorporates the just-in-time parts arrival process. Parts come into the factory and reach the workstations along the line in a way that minimizes the amount of parts storage required on the plant floor. Because parts reach the line just when they're needed, workers can build a multitude of versions of the van on a single line. This process is also called "bull's-eye sourcing" at the plant. Each workstation has what's known as an AIS box that's named for its vendor, American Industrial Systems, Inc. The box displays a list of parts that need to be added to the van at that step in the process and a sequence of how the parts are added. The vehicle and parts information sent to the box is known as "the broadcast." In addition to providing instructions for workers, the AIS box and broadcast allow plant managers to track each job and monitor vehicle build quality. That day has arrived.... As I sit here to begin this today, it is January 6, 1992, and we have fifty- one dues-paid members; so we begin. I'm not sure that 51 members is good or bad, but I promised myself not to have any expectations about numbers, so I guess 51 members must be &. Those 51 members are receiving this first newsletter. In addition, I am sending it along to 112 other people - most of whom received my November 1991 letter introducing this new club. These 112 haven't responded with a hiembership Application, so I thought I'd give them one last shot to join us right at the start. So - if you are reading this, but you have not paid your ten-dollar dues, please do so right away. If I do not hear from you, I will assume you are not a prospect - and remove your naroe fron ros mailing list. I do hope you'll join - the more the better.... Ny aims for this club are pretty simple. I hope to provide a real service for the members, first of all.

  • Aquaplane: from Oulton Broad to Oulton Park
Aquaplane: From Oulton Broad to Oulton Park. When it comes to motor sport, Great Britain – or to be more precise England – is a world leader and has been for several decades. It is widely acknowledged by historians that much of this is down to the availability of two very tunable 4 cylinder side-valve engines of humble backgrounds and a club that encouraged drivers to build and race their own cars. The first of these engines is the 750 cc Austin Seven, made in their millions from 1922 to the Second World War. The other was the 1172 cc Ford first seen in the 1934 Ford Model C and manufactured in modified form until 1959. The club responsible for creating this interest being the 750 MC. Exploded View of the Ford 1172cc Engine. This is how Colin Chapman, Eric Broadley, Frank Williams and Tony Southgate all started. From this came Lotus, Lola, Williams F1 and all the Grand Prix and Le Mans cars designed over the years by Southgate. In addition to this was the plethora of kit cars; originally they would have used the Austin or Ford chassis but soon Buckler space frames (Historic Review Vol. 3 Issue IV) would be readily available for those who wanted better handling. Many kit car manufactures disappeared without trace but others such as Speedex (later Marcos), TVR, Ginetta and of course Lotus went from strength to strength. As unlikely as this may seem this boom was partly due to the government and the fact that the Treasury exempted kit cars from purchase tax: which remained the case until the introduction of VAT in April 1973.
