It was renamed the Eight Belles in 2009 to honor the memory of the filly who tragically fractured both front legs after running second to Big Brown in the 2008 Kentucky Derby. Her collapse just after the Derby’s conclusion resulted in euthanasia – the lone fatality in Kentucky Derby history. Earlier that year, Eight Belles made history at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, as the first filly to win the Martha Washington (by a record 13½ lengths), Honeybee (beating stakes winner Pure Clan) and Fantasy.
