Pennsylvania’s breeding industry has ranked in the top 10 in the nation for Pennsylvania the past 15 years by number of registered foals produced, and Pennsylvania Breeding stallions sire more than half the total of state-bred foals. The numbers surged after the slot bill was signed into law by Governor Ed Rendell on July Fund has paid 4, 2004. When the first slot machines began operating in the state in 2006, a steady stream of revenue has benefited the racing and breeding industries. out over $30 Pennsylvania has always been at the forefront of lucrative breeding programs million on in the nation, rewarding those who breed, raise and/or race in the state. average over With the influx of slots revenue since 2006, money distributed through the Pennsylvania Breeding Fund has more than quadrupled! The Pennsylvania the last six Breeding Fund has paid out over $30 million on average over the last five years – far and away the richest of any program in the Mid-Atlantic Region. years.” Approximately $30 million will again be paid to PA-Breds racing in the state in 2017. There is plenty of opportunity, with an average of 400+ restricted races for state-breds over the past six years. PA-Breds can race at three different tracks offering 460 days of racing. Over the past four years, over 1,800 races were offered exclusively for PA-Breds, which included a restricted stakes schedule of 88 races totaling over $8 million in purses. Breeders are awarded bonuses of 40 percent of the purse on all Pennsylvania races through third place if the PA-Bred runner is sired by a registered Pennsylvania stallion or 20 percent for out-of-state sired runners. The potential is there to earn money even when the horse is no longer owned by the breeder, as long as the runner races in the state. Owners also reap rewards, up to 40 percent, through Awards (earned in non-restricted races) or Bonuses of 25 percent, paid through third place for PA-Sired horses in PA-Bred restricted Stakes races. In 2017, the total for ‘Owner Bonuses’ will amount to over $5 million paid out on top of the purse! Stallion owners also benefit with 10 percent of the purse share earned for their stallion’s PA-Sired runners. Total Fund payments can exceed six figures a year for Pennsylvania stallion farm owners. This PA Stallion Directory provides statistics, photos and background on stallions standing in the state. Examine race records...find the sire lines that work best for a particular mare...evaluate a stallion’s top runners to find a common denominator. This Directory also lists Pennsylvania farms that offer boarding and foaling services. It’s an invaluable source for getting the breeding season off to a successful start! We would like to thank the PTHA and HBPA at Parx, Penn National and Presque Isle for their dedication and support in making the Breeding Program in Pennsylvania the most lucrative in the country. 4 Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association • www.pabred.com Photo by Jennifer Poorman Top PA-Sired PA-Breds A Look at Page McKenney, Power of Snunner and The Man We are always proud of the work our PA-Breds do and to highlight that we’d like to take a look at some of the top PA-Sired PA-Breds of 2017. Page McKenney, Power of Snunner, and The Man not only have their outstanding records and accomplishments in common, but they all started out as curious and excited foals. There’s a lot of hard work and dedication involved in getting a thoroughbred from foaling to training, with lots of blood, sweat and tears in between. These three champions are our organization’s highest PA-Sired PA-Bred earners this year, and are proof that the Pennsylvania program can really put extra capital not only in their owners’ pockets, but also in their breeders’ pockets as well. As a reminder, PA-Sired PA-Breds now earn 40% Breeder Awards on all races run in PA (paid through third), effective January 2017, so there has never been a better time to book a Pennsylvania stallion. Page McKenney Veteran stakes millionaire Page McKenney has won a whopping 13 stakes races, including the G3 General George Stakes at Laurel Park. With over $1.75 million dollars in lifetime earnings, this PA-Sired PA-Bred 7-year-old son of Eavesdropper has hit the board an astonishing 39 times out of 52 career starts. In 27 consecutive stakes races, he has finished off the board only twice. Winner of the PA Restricted 2014 and 2015 Robellino Stakes and the 2017 Roanoke Stakes and Lyman Stakes, career highlights include a game 2nd in the G3 Pimlico Special, and a 2nd and 3rd in the $1.25 Million G2 Charles Town Classic. Page McKenney is owned by Adam Staple and Jalin Stable, is trained by Mary Eppler, and was bred by Dr. James E. Bryant and Linda P. Davis. 6 Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association • www.pabred.com Power of Snunner Power of Snunner, a 7-year-old Graded Stakes Placed mare, has hit the board 27 times out of 33 lifetime starts. Her total 9 career wins include taking the PA-Bred restricted 2017 Plum Pretty Stakes and 2015 Foxy J.G. Stakes at Parx Racing, as well as the 2017 Obeah Stakes at Delaware Park. Her 2017 campaign as a 7-year-old has proven to be her most profitable year to date. With 2nd place finishes in both the Hilliard Lyons Doubledogdare G3 Stakes at Keeneland, as well as the G3 Bayakoa Stakes at Oaklawn Park, she has bankrolled $221,250 of her lifetime earnings ($562,310) in 2017 alone. Power of Snunner was bred and is also owned by James M. Courtney, and trained by Penn National based trainer Timothy C. Kreiser. She is by PA-Sire Power By Far, who stands at Castle Rock Farm for a stud fee of $1,500 LFSN. The Man A $115,000 2-year-old purchase out of the Fasig Tipton Midlantic sale, The Man was originally sent to Santa Anita to campaign out of the Bob Baffert barn. Owned by his wife, Natalie J. Baffert and co-owner Bernard C. Schiappa, The Man broke his maiden in his fourth try sprinting at Santa Anita Park in March 2015. It was close to two years until the now 5-year-old son of PA-Sire Ecclesiastic resurfaced, but this time at Penn National for trainer John Servis. He won the PA- Bred restricted Allowance at Penn that night, and has been undefeated ever since. Winner of 6 straight races, his last win was a hard-fought half-length victory over veteran and MGSW Favorite Tale in the PA Restricted Banjo Picker Sprint Stakes.
