Abstract The karyotype of Amphisbaena ridleyi, an endemic species of the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, in State of Pernambuco, Brazil, is described after conventional staining, Ag-NOR impregnation and fluorescence in situ hybrid- ization (FISH) with a telomeric probe. The diploid number is 46, with nine pairs of macrochromosomes (three metacentrics, four subtelocentrics and two acrocentrics) and 14 pairs of microchromosomes. The Ag-NOR is located in the telomeric region of the long arm of metacentric chromosome 2 and FISH revealed signals only in the telomeric region of all chromosomes. Further cytogenetic data on other amphisbaenians as well as a robust phylogenetic hy- pothesis of this clade is needed in order to understand the evolutionary changes on amphisbaenian karyotypes. Key words: Amphisbaena ridleyi, karyotype, Fernando de Noronha, Ag-NOR, FISH with telomeric probes.

In Brazil it is recorded wide distribution from central Brazil to coastal Venezu- from Cerrado areas in the states of Goiás and Tocantins, ela and the Guianas, eastern Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and from Amazon Forest in Acre, Amazonas, Maranhão, and Peru. In this note, the known distribution range of Mato Grosso, Pará, Rondônia, and Roraima (e.g., Silva Jr. P. coronata is extended eastward to the border between et al. 2005; Zaher et al. 2008; Bernarde et al. 2013). Despite the states of Bahia and Pernambuco, and southward to its wide distribution range, P. coronata is considered to Cachoeira Alta, state of Goiás, both in Brazil. Consider- be rare, at least in some Amazonian areas (Cunha and ing the limited biogeographic information for most taxa, Nascimento 1993).

  • From Four Sites in Southern Amazonia, with A
Bol. Mus. Para. Emílio Goeldi. Cienc. Nat., Belém, v. 4, n. 2, p. 99-118, maio-ago. 2009 Squamata (Reptilia) from four sites in southern Amazonia, with a biogeographic analysis of Amazonian lizards Squamata (Reptilia) de quatro localidades da Amazônia meridional, com uma análise biogeográfica dos lagartos amazônicos Teresa Cristina Sauer Avila-PiresI Laurie Joseph VittII Shawn Scott SartoriusIII Peter Andrew ZaniIV Abstract: We studied the squamate fauna from four sites in southern Amazonia of Brazil. We also summarized data on lizard faunas for nine other well-studied areas in Amazonia to make pairwise comparisons among sites. The Biogeographic Similarity Coefficient for each pair of sites was calculated and plotted against the geographic distance between the sites. A Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity was performed comparing all sites. A total of 114 species has been recorded in the four studied sites, of which 45 are lizards, three amphisbaenians, and 66 snakes. The two sites between the Xingu and Madeira rivers were the poorest in number of species, those in western Amazonia, between the Madeira and Juruá Rivers, were the richest. Biogeographic analyses corroborated the existence of a well-defined separation between a western and an eastern lizard fauna. The western fauna contains two groups, which occupy respectively the areas of endemism known as Napo (west) and Inambari (southwest). Relationships among these western localities varied, except between the two northernmost localities, Iquitos and Santa Cecilia, which grouped together in all five area cladograms obtained. No variation existed in the area cladogram between eastern Amazonia sites. The easternmost localities grouped with Guianan localities, and they all grouped with localities more to the west, south of the Amazon River.

This species is characterized by having a very pointed snout, two supralabials and two infralabials, of which second ones are elongate and enormous, small eye visible under ocular, ocular very elongate, autotomy annulus poorly marked or absent, absence of dorsal, lateral and ventral sulci, and presence of vertical flat, unsegmented band-like structure with concave lateral edges on tip of tail. Hemipenis without spines or distinct ridges on proximal third, sulcus spermaticus only on proximal third. We make comparisons with other South American amphisbaenids, and provide a key to the amphisbaenids of the Guianan Region. The species is fossorial and inhabits Amazonian tropical rainforest forest near creeks. This is the second species known of the genus, which seems to be restricted to the Guiana Shield and immediate surroundings. Key words: Amphisbaenians; Brazil; Distribution; Hemipenis; Taxonomy THE FAMILY Amphisbaenidae is the most (La Macarena and Timbo´), added additional diverse of the suborder Amphisbaenia, with diagnostic features and pointed out character almost 180 valid species (Gans, 2005) distrib- variation in the species (Gans, 1971, 1974).
