Abstract Detailed distribution pattern of colubrid snakes in Serbia is still inadequately described, despite the long historical study. In this paper, we provide accurate distribution of seven species, with previously published and newly accumulated faunistic records compiled. Comparative analysis of faunas among all Balkan countries showed that Serbian colubrid fauna is among the most distinct (together with faunas of Slovenia and Romania), due to small number of species. Zoogeographic analysis showed high chorotype diversity of Serbian colubrids: seven species belong to six chorotypes. South-eastern Serbia (Pčinja River valley) is characterized by the presence of all colubrid species inhabiting our country, and deserves the highest conservation status at the national level.

REVIEW PAPER 94(497.11 НИШ)"00/04" 904"652"(398) DOI:10.5937/ZRFFP49-23194 IRENA V. LJUBOMIROVIĆ1 UNIVERSITY OF NIŠ FACULTY OF PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NAISSUS: A REVIEW OF POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC CIRCUMSTANCES IN THE CITY FROM THE 1st TO THE 5th CENTURY ABSTRACT. This paper is the result of the research of the history of ancient Naissus. Its aim is to present the history of Naissus in the ancient time when the city was a part of the Roman Empire. The research is based on literary and epigraphic sources and archaeological finds. The territory of Naissus was a part of two provinces, Dacia Mediterranea and Dacia Ripensis. Since Nais- sus was an ordinary provincial city, ancient writers of that time did not show much interest in its history. Thus, information on Naissus in literary sources is quite scarce and occasionally inaccurate. Some information on Naissus is found in the work of Procopius (De aedificiis), the document Noti- tia dignitatum, recording a workshop for making weapons and military equipment. Naissus also appears in the Theodosian Code, as one of the numerous towns where the emperors issused edicts and laws. Epigraphic monuments are of particular importance for studying the history of any Roman city. These provide valuable information on the way of life, customs, religion, government, and military and social organization of the ancient world. Besides literary and epigraphic sources, the archaeological finds— 1 [email protected] This paper is the result of a research which is a part of the project Christian Culture in the Balkans in the Middle Ages: the Byzantine Empire, the Serbs and the Bulgarians from the 9th to the 15th century (№ 177015), funded by The Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia and the project Niš and Ponišavlje in the ancient time and in the middle ages (№ 0-17-18), funded by Serbian Acadamy of Siences and Arts, branch in Niš.

  • SPATIAL PATTERNS of CRIME in the CITY of NIŠ * (SERBIA) UDC 343.9(497.11 Niš)
FACTA UNIVERSITATIS Series: Law and Politics Vol. 18, No 1, 2020, pp. 37-52 https://doi.org/10.22190/FULP2001037S Review Paper ECOLOGY OF CRIME IN URBAN AND SUBURBAN AREA: SPATIAL PATTERNS OF CRIME IN THE CITY OF NIŠ * (SERBIA) UDC 343.9(497.11 Niš) Dušan Stanković The Police Station Crveni krst, Police Directorate in Niš, Serbia Abstract. The ecological theory of crime was first introduced into criminology by the Cartographic School of Criminology in the 19th century. Ecological theories of crime were further developed by the Chicago School of Criminology in the early 20th century. Contemporary ecological theories include routine activity theory, crime pattern theory, and rational choice theory. The impact of the ecological perspective in scientific research of crime is noticeable in today's studies too. Modern scientists, researchers, and practitioners study crime by using the geographic information system, statistical and geostatistical methods, and crime mapping. The empirical research on the spatial patterns and concentration of crime in the City of Nis, Republic of Serbia, was conducted on the research sample of property crimes and violent crimes committed in the years 2008, 2013 and 2018. All the cases were geocoded into spatial units which represent urban and suburban areas in the territory of the City of Niš. Descriptive statistics was used to identify the urban areas with the highest crime rate. Andersen’s Spatial Point Pattern Test (SPPT) was used to check the research hypothesis that the spatial patterns of crime are stable over time. This hypothesis has not been confirmed as the findings show that criminal activity demonstrates a trend of moving away from the central city zones towards the urban (residential) areas and suburban settlements.

Archaeological sites on the territory of south-eastern Serbia were visited for the first time by the famous writer Feliks Kanic (1824-1904) in the second half of the nineteenth century. He started work on making the archaeological map of Serbia in 1861 and that task would later be continued by Nikola Vulic (1872-1945). He visited archaeological sites on the territory of Niš as well as Svrljig and its surroundings. Vulić wrote facts about these archaeological sites in his unpublished writings titled “Appendixes for the archaeological map section of Niš” - a part of the scientist's unpublished manuscripts which are kept at the National Library of Serbia. In this work we will expose facts from Vulić's unpublished manuscripts. Key words: Feliks Kaniz, archaeological map, Svrljig. 1. INTRODUCTION Archaeological sites on the territory of South-East Serbia were first visited by the famous travel writer Felix Kanitz (1824–1904) in the second half of the nineteenth century. He began work on the archaeological map of Serbia in 1861 only for the work to be continued by Nikola Vulić (1872–1945) by the early twentieth century. In addition to locations in the city of Niš, he visited Svrljig and its surroundings as well. Information on the archaeological findings from these localities are in Vulić’s unpublished notes titled “Appendices to the archaeological map section of Niš”, which are part of Vulić’s written legacy that is kept in the National Library of Serbia.
