The Blues tell the story of life's difficulties and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the hardest realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some new sense of hope or triumph. This is triumphant music. Modern Jazz has continued in this tradition, singing the songs of a more complicated urban existence. When life itself offers no order, the musician creates an order and meaning from the sounds of the earth which flow through his instrument. Everybody has the Blues. Everybody longs for meaning. Everybody needs to love and be loved. Everybody needs to clap hands and be happy. Everybody longs for faith. In music, especially this broad category called Jazz, there is a stepping stone toward all of these. (Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., opening speech at the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival) 9 10 Preface As a small child playing the piano I noticed that even though listeners would display reasonable appreciation now and then, life on the piano stool essentially seemed to me a rather lonely enterprise. After a few years, however, I came to discover worlds in which my piano playing could function in contexts where I felt it was needed and made sense. One of these worlds was the field of jazz music. In it, I found the encouragement of tutors, the friendship of fellow musicians, and the response of audiences. From the age of 12 and onwards, this world has meant a lot to me. Later on, I studied jazz and jazz pedagogy at Malmö Academy of Music and have remained a jazz pianist on an amateur or semi-professional level ever since. However, during all of my musical life, I have returned to and repeatedly reflected on a fretting and somewhat alarming suspicion that my formal jazz education may not, in any significant way, have made me improve very much as a jazz musician.

    5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

These critics disrupt the sense of a singular and insular jazz canon by challenging it through the creation of what I call an insularity, which is a bounded collection of artists and music with a definable tradition, values and established criteria which regulates what is suitable for inclusion. This dissertation argues that jazz does not consist of a single canon and music that exists beyond the canon's boundaries; rather, jazz contains multiple insularities that challenge the canon and vie for the opportunity to overthrow the canon in order to reach canonical status. This dissertation conceptualizes jazz critics as cultural authorities who create or deconstruct insularities through a variety of race, gender and nation projects. It examines the criticism of Leonard Feather, Val Wilmer and Nathaniel Mackey to highlight the numerous ways in which critics engage with multiple insularities.

    This Article Examines Two Different Scenes from August

    Nordic Theatre Studies 76 Vol. 28, No. 1, 2016, 76-86. An increasing interest in popular culture, entertainment, and leisure studies has resulted in a more thorough discussion of entertainment and its function in everyday life. That entertainment needs to be studied on its own terms, and not just in relation to some other area, is important. Instead of viewing entertainment as merely something connected with enjoyment and pleasure, the article looks at how entertainment renegotiates vital questions and topics from everyday life through its performance practice. Entertainment is used as an enhanced awareness, a de-familiarization, illustrating the function of different norms. The article examines two different scenes from two different productions of August Strindberg’s novel The People of Hemsö. The first analyses the arrival of an outsider, coming from the mainland to the archipelago. The second underlines the seriousness of gender inequality. Both examples stress the importance of studying how entertainment functions as a specific performance style/practice that re-negotiates the content being communicated. When jazz was the existentialist accessory of the postwar fifties, it seemed, according to James Baldwin, the very first question on a Frenchman’s lips upon meeting an African American was always, “Jouez-vous la trompette?” So much was this the habit (and he was not alone in identifying it) that Baldwin once joked if he were to write a memoir of those years it would be titled, “Non, nous ne jouons pas la trompette.”1 Such essentialization was certainly not an invention of the postwar decade and the anecdote is an example of the difficulty, as Andy Fry has convincingly demonstrated in Paris Blues: African American Music and French Popular Culture, 1920-1960, with the notion that the French were sophisticated appreciators of jazz and African American performance. Using a variety of source material which he scrutinizes in often creative ways, Fry demonstrates that so many assumptions about black performers in France and in Europe are deeply problematic: that they received an early and welcome reception there, that jazz was bound up intimately with the history of the Resistance, and that African Americans did not experience racism in France.
