  • Chapter Sixteen Our Apostolate Today Epilogue
Chapter Sixteen Our Apostolate Today Epilogue HOUSES OF FORMATION St. Vincent's Seminary We have already seen that the House of Karuhatan, in Polo, Bulacan was first occupied in 1948 by Fr. Juguera with four Filipino novices and one lay Brother, to whom were soon added a group of novices, scholastics and two priests exiled from China. In 1950 our Apostolic School, St. Vincent's Seminary was established there. In 1953 a new building was erected for Minor Seminarians. Most Reverend Gaetano Mignani, C. M., a missionary Bishop expelled from China, blessed the cornerstone of the new building. On June 17, 1955 the first novices from the Apostolic School were housed also in the Seminary of Valenzuela, Bulacan. They remained there with the Minor Seminarians, until 1960 when they were transferred to San Miguel, Bulacan. On June 8, 1959, through the efforts of the Seminary Rectors, Fr. Eulogio Coello and Fr. Modesto Lopez, a temporary permit was ob tained from the Government to operate the school, officially recognizing its offering of "A Complete Classical Secondary Course." Ten years later, on July 7, 1969, another temporary permit was obtained for a "Complete Secondary Course under 2-2 Plan". On June 29, 1970, official Recognition was obtained. From 1950 to 1975, a period of 25 years, there were 631 students who passed through the portals of St. Vincent's Seminary. One hundred fifty-nine of these were able to reach the Novitiate and Major Seminary. All the Filipino Vincentian priests (41) starting from the group of Fr. Macazo and Fr. Ramos were students of this Apostolic School.

  • The American Colonial and Contemporary Traditions
THE AMERICAN COLONIAL AND CONTEMPORARY TRADITIONS The American tradition in Philippine architecture covers the period from 1898 to the present, and encompasses all architectural styles, such as the European styles, which came into the Philippines during the American colonial period. This tradition is represented by churches, schoolhouses, hospitals, government office buildings, commercial office buildings, department stores, hotels, movie houses, theaters, clubhouses, supermarkets, sports facilities, bridges, malls, and high-rise buildings. New forms of residential architecture emerged in the tsalet, the two-story house, and the Spanish-style house. The contemporary tradition refers to the architecture created by Filipinos from 1946 to the present, which covers public buildings and private commercial buildings, religious structures, and domestic architecture like the bungalow, the one-and-a-half story house, the split-level house, the middle-class housing and the low-cost housing project units, the townhouse and condominium, and least in size but largest in number, the shanty. History The turn of the century brought, in the Philippines, a turn in history. Over three centuries of Spanish rule came to an end, and five decades of American rule began. The independence won by the Philippine Revolution of 1896 was not recognized by Spain, nor by the United States, whose naval and military forces had taken Manila on the pretext of aiding the revolution. In 1898 Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, and after three years of military rule the Americans established a civil government. With a new regime came a new culture. The English language was introduced and propagated through the newly established public school system.

  • Filipino Catholicism: a Case Study in Religious Change
FILIPINO CATHOLICISM: A CASE STUDY IN RELIGIOUS CHANGE F. LANDA ]OCANO IN THIS PAPER I SHALL DESCRIBE AND ANALYZE CERTAIN aspects of what has been labeled in the literature as Filipino "folk religion." I say "certain aspects" in that it is impossible within the limits of .a single essay to deal with all facets of Filipino folk religious practices. In fact, the discussion will center mainly on Roman Catholicism. Even if the scope of this study is limited, it is nevertheless worthwhile undertaking if only to start something upon which other future and more detailed works may be based. It must be said, in this connection, that this essay is written from an anthropological point of view, not from any religious denomination. The materials used for this purpose have been gathered from different parts of the Philippines, either through fieldwork done by myself since 1955 or culled from what other fieldworkers have written during the last decade. The description of urban religious practices is based largely on a preliminary six months work in Manila's major churches and suburban centers. During this period, I have interviewed churchgoers, priests, pastors, religious devotees, and lay leaders. I have likewise participated in many of the rituals going on in or about these religious centers. In order to appreciate the implications of many of these religious prac- tices for the present discussion, let us first examine a number of central and interrelated theoretical points before proceeding with the descriptive analysis. ( 1) Religion, viewed as an embodiment of profound human experi- ences, is committed to the expression and explanation of what Paul Tillich calls the "ultimate concern"1 of society - that is, the fulfillment of the "restlessness of the heart" within the flux of daily activities.
