ABOUT THE PLAY In The Fez, the charmed spell of the theater has somehow absented itself, and something strange happens. A play that was originally printed on a tee shirt is finally produced! In The Sandalwood Box, college student Marsha Gates lost her voice. On her way to speech therapy, she encounters Professor Claudia Mitchell, who captures the most captivating catastrophes of the world and preserves them in a sandalwood box. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. He’s trained with Christopher Bayes, Jim Calder, Brian McManamon, and did a semester at the National Theater Institute. In 2016 he was waitlisted for NYU Grad Acting’s Class of 2019 and in the same year attended callback weekend at the Yale School of Drama. He’s pretty darn good. (Hey there agents, managers, CDs, directors, producers, network heads, it’s me, Conor! I’m super cool and want to work with you!) RORA BRODWIN (Eliza Doolittle) is a NYC based actor, playwright, and screenwriter. New York stage credits include: A Modest Proposal (Cherry Lane Theater), Gather ‘Round (Dixon Place), Rosencrantz and The Sandalwood Box & Fez Guildenstern are Dead (The Brick), So Sad, So Sexy (Rising Sun Lab), and Bunny, Godmother of Title IX (Dixon Place and Yale), for which she won the Yale Trumbull College Fine Arts Award. She is a recent graduate of Yale University where she performed as Salieri in Amadeus, Major Powell in Men on Boats, and Soldier in The Square Root of Three Sisters (Yale School of Drama and Krymov production). Additionally, there will be a mid-semester conference with each student and an end-of-the-year conference with each student, to give and receive feedback. These will be scheduled within the semester time, and will not infringe on either the Spring Break or the end of the year Reading Period. COURSE OVERVIEW This seminar course will explore the American Avant-Garde Theatre of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and its enduring significance. It will include an examination of the political, social, economic, and aesthetic events that led to its beginnings, and will follow the journey of its passionate creativity and diversity of expression, as well as the political upheavals and the cultural revolution that were inextricably a part of it. Readings will include the work of Gertrude Stein, Allen Ginsberg, The Living Theatre, The Open Theater, The Performance Group, Richard Foreman’s Ontological-Hysteric Company, Charles Ludlam’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company, Mabou Mines, and others. We will also read 1968, Environmental Theatre, Be Here Now, Towards a Poor Theatre, and selected historical overviews. We will explore each group’s vision, body of work, dynamics, and relation and significance to their world. In line with this, students will write about these theatre companies, and create their own live performances and work, based on the readings, possible films, and discussions.

  • Contemporary American Playwriting the Issue of Legacy
    CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN PLAYWRITING The Issue of Legacy Jason Grote, Caridad Svich, and Anne Washburn in conversation with Ken Urban espite proclamations to the contrary, there is a surge of new writing in the American theatre. Not plays masquerading as films or TV shows, but seri- ous plays written by writers with a passionate commitment to the stage. DBut since this new generation of theatre artists is less centralized than previous ones, working in cities and towns across the U.S., it is hard to talk about a specific movement or scene. For those working in New York City, Off-Off Broadway no longer adequately describes the theatre that these playwrights create. Such writers do not want to be defined in relation to Broadway, for Broadway ceased to be a venue for adventurous new writing decades ago. This conversation is an attempt by four playwrights to define some of the identifying characteristics and concerns of this new writing. The starting point is the issue of legacy: How do the historical avant-garde, the Language Playwrights of the 1970s and 80s (Mac Wellman, Jeffrey Jones, Len Jenkin), and the classics influence contemporary playwriting? To gain a better sense of what is happening now, it proves beneficial to look back. The conversation featured Jason Grote, Caridad Svich, and Anne Washburn. Jason Grote is the recipient of the 2006 P73 Playwriting Fellowship and co-chair of the SoHo Rep Writer/Director Lab. He is writing The Wal-Mart Plays for the Working Theater in New York. Caridad Svich is a resident playwright at New Dramatists and editor of Trans-Global Readings: Crossing Theatrical Boundaries and Divine Fire: Eight Contemporary Plays Inspired by the Greeks.

  • UNIVERSES, Whose Theatrical Works Fuse Poetry, Theatre, Jazz, Hip-Hop
    Who Are UNIVERSES? UNIVERSES, whose theatrical works fuse poetry, theatre, jazz, hip-hop, politics, down-home blues and Spanish boleros, came together in 1995 in the open mic scene of New York City. Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-Sapp were performers at the NuYorican Poets Café in Lower Manhattan who blended their talents. William Ruiz (a.k.a. Ninja) auditioned for UNIVERSES in 2004 after graduating from college and became a core member of the ensemble. Over the group’s 20-plus-year career, they have created and/or performed such pieces as The Ride (1998), Blue Suite (a.k.a. Eyewitness Blues) (2004), The Last Word (2005), One Shot in Lotus Position (2006) and others. They presented their pieces at places such as the Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Humana Festival of New American Plays, Berkeley Repertory Theatre and The Public Theater and have performed in Poland, Chile and Colombia. Their first show and one of their better- known works is Slanguage, which premiered in 2001 at the New York Theatre Workshop, directed by Jo Bonney. Since then, they have continued to write and perform nationally acclaimed shows that are socially conscious and rooted in historical narratives and icons. Ameriville, which premiered at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in 2009, focused on their observations of the people affected by, and their social commentary of, the politics surrounding, hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. For Party People, the group interviewed members of the Black Panther Party and the Young Lords to capture the challenges of their activism in the 1960s and the legacies of that work.

    Christiane Noll, a New York born, New Jersey raised actress was nominated for both the 2010 Tony Award and Drama Desk Award and won a Helen Hayes Award for her portrayal of Mother on Broadway in the Kennedy Center Revival of Ragtime. She made her Broadway debut starring in Jekyll & Hyde, creating the role of Emma. Ms. Noll received an Ovation Award for her comedic turn as Hope Cladwell in the National Tour of Urinetown, wowed audiences again as Vanna Vane in the new musical The Mambo Kings, soared as Jane Smart in the American premiere of The Witches of Eastwick, and most recently received another Drama Desk nomination for her work in Chaplin. She has been a member of the national tours of Grease as Sandy, Miss Saigon as Ellen, and City of Angels as Mallory/Avril as well as a tour of Australia and Thailand as Nellie in South Pacific. Ms. Noll made her opera debut with Plácido Domingo and the Washington National Opera in The Merry Widow as Valencienne at The Kennedy Center, her Hollywood Bowl debut with Dame Julie Andrews in The Gift of Music, and her Carnegie Hall debut as one of the 3 Broadway Divas with The New York Pops and Skitch Henderson in his last pops performance.
