Battles of the Part I

Grade: 3 to 5

Standards National Council for the Social Studies Standards: Time, Continuity, and Change Students will understand Key people, events, and places associated with the history of the community, nation, and world.

Goal: Students will demonstrate an understanding of American Revolutionary War battles.

Objectives: Students will… 1. Chronologically organize postage stamps depicting battles of the American Revolution. 2. Describe each battle’s location. 3. List facts related to the battle.

Set Induction As an entire class, students brainstorm words and facts about colonial period war using letters of the alphabet. For example, A = attack, B = battalion, C = cutlass, etc.

Stamp Assortment Activity Find stamps that represent battles, soldiers, or weapons of war.

Activities 1. Working in small groups, students receive a set of the stamps depicting people, places, and events of the American Revolution. 2. Using a stock page, students chronologically organize the stamps of people and battles depicted on the stamps. 3. Next to each stamp, students record each battle’s location. Students may refer to their textbooks or TheAmericanRevolution.org as a reference. A complete list of battles is provided, but the stamps will not illustrate every battle. 4. On a separate page, each student lists facts related to each battle.

Assessment Students’ stock pages should list correctly the chronology of American Revolutionary battles and locations. Facts listed on a separate page will demonstrate students’ understanding of the battles.

Extension Activities Given a maps of colonial America, students attach battle stamps according to the location of the battle. Battles of the American Revolution, courtesy of TheAmericanRevolution.org
