Twenty-four previously known, 2 new, and 4 unidentified species in 17 gen- era and 12 families are recorded. Three dubious literature records are also mentioned. All 30 con- firmed species, except Sanguinicolidae gen. sp. (Aporocotylidae), are described and figured. Life cy- cles are discussed where known. Philopinna kawamutsu sp. nov. (Didymozoidae) was found in the connective tissue between the vertebrae and the air bladder near the esophagus of Nipponocypris tem- minckii (Temminck and Schlegel) (Cyprinidae). Genarchopsis yaritanago sp. nov. (Derogenidae) was found in the intestine of Tanakia lanceolata (Temminck and Schlegel) (Cyprinidae). Asymphylodora innominata (Faust, 1924) comb. nov. is proposed for A. macrostoma Ozaki, 1925 (Lissorchiidae). A key to the families, genera, and species of these digeneans is provided. Its comparative analysis provides a great contribution to evolu- RNA secondary structure tionary biology, allowing find out how the SSU rRNA secondary structure originated, developed and evolved. Molecular evolution Herein, we provide the first data on the putative SSU rRNA secondary structures of the Plagiorchiida species.The Taxonomy structures were found to be quite conserved across broad range of species studied, well compatible with those of others eukaryotic SSU rRNA and possessed some peculiarities: cross-shaped structure of the ES6b, additional shortened ES6c2 helix, and elongated ES6a helix and h39 + ES9 region. The secondary structures of variable regions ES3 and ES7 appeared to be tissue-specific while ES6 and ES9 were specific at a family level allowing considering them as promising markers for digenean systematics. Their uniqueness more depends on the length than on the nucleotide diversity of primary sequences which evolutionary rates well differ. The findings have important implications for understanding rRNA evolution, developing molecular taxonomy and systematics of Plagiorchiida as well as for constructing new anthelmintic drugs. -

The three species were subjected to morphological, mor- phometric and molecular analyses. The morphological study revealed that A. handiai, G. goppo and P. chauhani can be distinguished by their congeners on the basis of their morphology. Partial nucleo- tide sequences of the 28S ribosomal RNA gene were obtained from the three trematode species and deposited in the GenBank. A phylogenetic reconstruction based on the 28S rRNA gene placed the three studied species within their respective families and their validity is discussed. For the fi rst time molecular data of newly collected material of these species from India were used for confi rmation of their validity and to assess their phylogenetic relationships. We list 61 species representing 13 genera within 4 families and 2 orders of aspidogastreans associated with 298 species of invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. The majority of records include bivalves (44% of the total number of host-parasite associations), whereas records from bony fishes represent 32% of host-parasite associations. -

The male gamete of A. sigani exhibits the general morphology described in digeneans with the presence of two axonemes of different lengths showing the 9 + ‘‘1’’ pattern of the Trepaxonemata, a nucleus, two mitochondria, two bundles of parallel cor- tical microtubules, external ornamentation, spine-like bodies and granules of glycogen. -

Annual Report (2006) for the ARC/NHMRC Research Network for Parasitology 1 Annual Report (2006) for the ARC/NHMRC Research Network for Parasitology • A summary of the overall goals and objectives, programs and research priorities and any changes to these that may have occurred during the past year Objectives The mission of the ARC/NHMRC Research Network for Parasitology (as stated in the application for funding) is to: • focus and enhance Australia’s fundamental, strategic and applied parasitology research capabilities to understand parasitism, parasite biology and parasitic disease; and • to use that understanding to discover and develop sustainable control strategies to improve and maintain the health and well-being of humans and animals. The Network aims to: • create a website that will foster national and international collaborations by providing access to databases on parasites, parasite genomes, bioinformatics analysis tools, parasitology research resources and protocols, parasitology researchers – this will prevent duplication of research and promote the adoption of uniform protocols, which will fast track Australia's research effort; • organise and fund conferences, workshops and meetings for scientists, industry representatives, end-users (eg farmers, veterinarians, wildlife experts), government representatives and community groups, including participation by international experts; • foster and finance exchange of staff between national and international research institutions to maximise access to key infrastructure, equipment,
