An Appeal to Devotees || Om Shri Gurubhyo Namaha || An Appeal to Devotees Sunkadakatte Sri Vinayaka Temple Kallianpur, Udupi Taluk and District Karnataka, PIN 576 114 || Om Shri Gurubhyo Namaha || Jai Shankar, Dear Sadhaka-s A PROFILE OF SUNKADAKATTE SRI VINAYAKA TEMPLE Kallianpur is located on the southern bank of river Swarna and is now a small town and a suburb of Udupi. Kallianpur was a place of considerable commercial importance during mediaeval period. Sunkadakatte Sri Vinayaka Temple is situated on the road leading to the river port which was an important transit point. Sunkadakatte used to be place for collection of tolls (‘Sunka’ in Kannada) for the ferry transport. Sri Vinayaka Temple on Sunkadakatte was the place where passengers and devotees used to pray and pay their obeisance for safe onward journey. The Vinayaka idol is extremely charming. It is about 30 cms tall and is carved out of jet-black stone. The attributes in the upper two arms Vaishnavite, namely ‘Chakra’ and ‘Shankha’. The lower two arms hold ‘Modaka’ and ‘Danta’. Lord Vinayaka, depicted seated with both the legs touching the ground, and carved with great detail is a constant reminder of the glory of Vijayanagara Empire. It is believed that the idol is at least 600 years old. While devotees from all sections of the society and from places in and around Kallianpur worship Sunkadakatte Lord Sri Vinayaka, it is one of the Saraswat temples and is managed by Chitrapur Saraswat residents since a long time. Over the years, the sacred shrine suffered financial strain to the extent that even the daily viniyogas were affected. The paulies, surroundings and garbhagriha were also in a state of disrepair as a result of age or neglect. Therefore, with sashtang pranaams and humble prayers, at the lotus feet of Lord Vinayaka, we have endeavoured to bring back the glory of the sacred and powerful shrine to benefit devotees from His divine blessings. The estimated cost of reconstruction is in the range of Rs 75 to Rs 100 Lakhs and it is also proposed to raise funds for Nitya Viniyoga, amounting to Rs 50 Lakhs, to ensure His devout worship on a regular basis. We, therefore, appeal to all the devotees to contribute wholeheartedly towards ‘Jeernodhara’ of the temple. Donations of any amount are welcome and are gratefully accepted. The three rock-cut dwaras have been placed, Electrical wiring is now in progress and Gopuram work will be taken-up next. Some pictures are given below. Also, a living quarter for Archak, behind the temple is being constructed and work has already started on the same. Compound wall work will also start soon. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt.

    DISTRICT DISASTER MANAGEMENT PLAN- UDUPI UDUPI DISTRICT 2015-16 -1- -2- Executive Summary The District Disaster Management Plan is a key part of an emergency management. It will play a significant role to address the unexpected disasters that occur in the district effectively. The information available in DDMP is valuable in terms of its use during disaster. Based on the history of various disasters that occur in the district, the plan has been so designed as an action plan rather than a resource book. Utmost attention has been paid to make it handy, precise rather than bulky one. This plan has been prepared which is based on the guidelines from the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM). While preparing this plan, most of the issues, relevant to crisis management, have been carefully dealt with. During the time of disaster there will be a delay before outside help arrives. At first, self-help is essential and depends on a prepared community which is alert and informed. Efforts have been made to collect and develop this plan to make it more applicable and effective to handle any type of disaster. The DDMP developed touch upon some significant issues like Incident Command System (ICS), In fact, the response mechanism, an important part of the plan is designed with the ICS. It is obvious that the ICS, a good model of crisis management has been included in the response part for the first time. It has been the most significant tool for the response manager to deal with the crisis within the limited period and to make optimum use of the available resources.

It’s three distinct agro-climatic zones range from coastal flatlands in the west with undulating hills and valleys in the middle and high hill ranges in the east that separates it from the peninsula. There is a narrow strip of coastal plains with varying width between the mountain and the Arabian Sea, the average width being about 20 km.

Annual Picnic: KAOCA’s annual picnic was held on 28th August at Central Park, Santa Clara. The day-long event with fun activities and food was attended by over 150 Konkanis. Kids and adults alike enjoyed the fun and cozy setting in Central Park. The day started with a friendly cricket match. The kids enjoyed the inflatable jumps and the popcorn. The food served was an Indianized version of the Chipotle bowl. The afternoon activities included games for both adults and kids.

The rule of Kadambas, the Chalukyas, Gangas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagar rulers, the Bahamanis of Gulbarga and Bidar, Adilshahis of Bijapur, Mysore Wodeyars, the Keladi rulers, Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan and the rule of British Commissioners have left behind Forts, Magnificient Palaces, Temples, Mosques, Churches and beautiful works of art and architecture in Karnataka. The fauna and flora, the National parks, the animal and bird sanctuaries provide a sight of wild animals like elephants, tigers, bisons, deers, black bucks, peacocks and many species in their natural habitat. A rich variety of flora like: aromatic sandalwood, pipal and banyan trees are abundantly available in the State. The river Cauvery, Tunga, Krishna, Kapila – enrich the soil of the land and contribute to the State’s agricultural prosperity. The water falls created by the rivers are a feast to the eyes of the outlookers. Historical bakground: Karnataka is a land with rich historical past. It has many pre-historic sites and most of them are in the river valleys. The pre-historic culture of Karnataka is quite distinct from the pre- historic culture of North India, which may be compared with that existed in Africa. 1 Parts of Karnataka were subject to the rule of the Nandas, Mauryas and the Shatavahanas; Chandragupta Maurya (either Chandragupta I or Sannati Chandragupta Asoka’s grandson) is believed to have visited Sravanabelagola and spent his last years in this place.
