Benthic macroinvertebrates are commonly included in studies to monitor the effects of human and natural stresses on marine and estuarine ecosystems. There are several reasons for this. Macroinvertebrates (here defined as animals retained on a 0.5-mm mesh sieve) are abundant in most coastal and estuarine sediments, typically on the order of 103 to 104 per meter squared. Benthic communities are typically composed of many taxa from different phyla, and quantitative measures of community diversity (e.g., Rosenberg et al. 2004) and the relative abundance of animals with different feeding behaviors (e.g., Weisberg et al. 1997, Pelletier et al. 2010), can be used to evaluate ecosystem health. Because most benthic invertebrates are sedentary as adults, they function as integrators, over periods of months to years, of the properties of their environment. -

Loricifera Acknowledgements Glossary Bibliography Biographical Sketch Summary UNESCO – EOLSS This chapter provides information on several basal bilaterian groups: flatworms, nemerteans, Gnathifera,SAMPLE and Nemathelminthes. CHAPTERS These include species-rich taxa such as Nematoda and Platyhelminthes, and as taxa with few or even only one species, such as Micrognathozoa (Limnognathia maerski) and Cycliophora (Symbion pandora). All Acanthocephala and subgroups of Platyhelminthes and Nematoda, are parasites that often exhibit complex life cycles. Most of the taxa described are marine, but some have also invaded freshwater or the terrestrial environment. “Aschelminthes” are not a natural group, instead, two taxa have been recognized that were earlier summarized under this name. Gnathifera include taxa with a conspicuous jaw apparatus such as Gnathostomulida, Micrognathozoa, and Rotifera. Once specific genetic differences were de- tected, ‘a posteriori’ searching for phenotypic characters has been undertaken to differentiate cryptic species and to formally describe and name them. The name D. petraeum (Monterosato, 1884) should be restricted to the species of this complex dis- tributed around the central Mediterranean (type locality in Sicily). In the present work this taxon is redescribed under the oldest valid name D. cristatum (Biondi, 1857), and a new species belonging to this complex is described, distributed in the western Mediterranean. These descriptions are based on a comparative study focusing on the protoconch, teleoconch, and external and internal anatomy. Morphologically, the two species can be only distinguished on the basis of non-easily visible anatomical features, and by differences in protoconch size and sculpture. -

L 334/2 EN Offi cial Jour nal of the European Union 13.10.2020 COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING REGULATION (EU) 2020/1470 of 12 October 2020 on the nomenclature of countries and territories for the European statistics on international trade in goods and on the geographical breakdown for other business statistics (Text with EEA relevance) THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION, Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, Having regard to Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 of the European Parliament and of the Council (1), and in particular point (d) of Article 7(1) thereof, Whereas: (1) For the detailed topics listed in Annex I to Regulation (EU) 2019/2152, Member States shall compile data relevant to each detailed topic. The Commission should further specify the classifications (including the product, countries and territories as well as nature of transaction lists) and breakdowns. (2) The alphabetical coding of countries and territories should be based on the current version of standard ISO 3166 alpha 2, insofar as that standard is compatible with the requirements of Union legislation and the Union’s statistical requirements. (3) The geographical breakdown of European business statistics other than European statistics on international trade in goods may be less detailed and contain small differences from the nomenclature of countries and territories for the European statistics on international trade in goods. (4) As Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 repeals Regulation (EC) No 471/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council (2), this Regulation should replace Commission Regulation (EU) No 1106/2012 (3). (5) The measures provided for in this Regulation are in accordance with the opinion of the European Statistical System Committee, HAS ADOPTED THIS REGULATION: Article 1 The nomenclature of countries and territories for the European statistics on international trade in goods that shall be valid as from 1 January 2021 is set out in Annex I. -

Alfaya3 Nemertean classification has closely followed Stiasny‐ Fernando Ángel Fernández‐Álvarez4 Wijnhoff’s scheme (1936) that was based on Schultze’s Håkan S Andersson5 (1851) division of the taxon into the two classes Anopla and Sonia C. S. Andrade6 Enopla. In August 2018, the 9th International Conference of Thomas Bartolomaeus7 Nemertean Biology took place in the Wadden Sea Station of Patrick Beckers7 the Alfred Wegener Institute in List auf Sylt, Germany. At Gregorio Bigatti3 this meeting, the community reached consensus to revise ne- Irina Cherneva8 mertean taxonomy at the class level, based on the compiled Alexey Chernyshev9,10 evidence from studies on nemertean systematics published Brian M. Chung11 in the last 15 years (Andrade et al., 2014, 2012 ; Thollesson Jörn von Döhren7 & Norenburg, 2003). Previous classifications (e.g., Stiasny‐ Gonzalo Giribet12 Wijnhoff, 1936) are not based on phylogenetic grounds, and Jaime Gonzalez‐Cueto13 the use of these names is therefore nowadays not wholly in- Alfonso Herrera‐Bachiller14 formative. One species, Eurythoe laevisetis, occurs in the eastern and cen- tral Mediterranean, likely constituting the first historical introduction to the Mediterranean Sea and the other, Eurythoe complanata, in both eastern and Levantine basins. Brief notes on their taxonomy are also provided and their potential pathways for introduction to the Mediterranean are discussed. -

However, our understanding of this history remains limited because regeneration ability has only been evaluated in a tiny fraction of species. Available comparative regeneration studies have identified losses of regenerative ability, yet clear documentation of gains is lacking. We surveyed regenerative ability in 34 species spanning the phylum Nemertea, assessing the ability to regenerate heads and tails either through our own experiments or from literature reports. Our sampling included representatives of the 10 most diverse families and all three orders comprising this phylum. -
