PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I examine three significant roles – musicians, audiences, and mediators, and focus on the interaction between the localized Chinese metal scene and metal globalization. This thesis project uses multiple methods, including textual analysis, observation, surveys, and in-depth interviews. In this thesis, I illustrate an image of the Chinese metal scene, present the characteristics and the development of metal musicians, fans, and mediators in China, discuss their contributions to scene’s construction, and analyze various internal and external factors that influence the localization of metal in China. After that, I argue that the development and the localization of the metal scene in China goes through three stages, the emerging stage (1988-1996), the underground stage (1997-2005), the indie stage (2006-present), with Chinese characteristics. And, this localized trajectory is influenced by the accessibility of metal resources, the rapid economic growth, urbanization, and the progress of modernization in China, and the overall development of cultural industry and international cultural communication. iv For Yisheng and our unborn baby! v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First of all, I would like to show my deepest gratitude to my advisor, Dr.

Volume 20, Number 2, March 2014 Copyright © 2014 Society for Music Theory Review of S. Alexander Reed, Assimilate: A Critical History of Industrial Music (Oxford, 2013) David Heetderks NOTE: The examples for the (text-only) PDF version of this item are available online at: http://www.mtosmt.org/issues/mto.14.20.2/mto.14.20.2.heetderks.php KEYWORDS: industrial, post punk, electronic music, EBM, electronic body music, futurepop, cut-up, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, Laibach, Burroughs Received March 2014 [1] The genre of industrial music is long-lived and, as is evident from comparing Audio Clip 1 and Audio Clip 2, encompasses a broad range of styles. Audio Clip 1, from “Hamburger Lady” (1978) by Throbbing Gristle, is a collage of noisy sounds and a spoken text that has been electronically modified to near indistinguishability. The only suggestion of a beat is provided by a distant thump, perhaps suggesting a heartbeat. The text assaults common notions of good taste: it describes the medical care of a severely burned woman, forcing listeners to confront a figure that civilized society would keep hidden. Audio Clip 2, from “Headhunter” (1988) by Front 242, features a driving dance beat that, in contradistinction to “Hamburger Lady,” is crisp and motoric. The lead singer shouts out the story of a bounty hunter, performing an aggressive form of masculinity. The sounds of industrial music have appeared even in recent years: the harsh and abrasive synthesizer beats in Kanye West’s 2013 album Yeezus have galvanized critics, leading some to describe a masochistic form of listening that is reminiscent of responses to industrial music.

  • Heavy Metal and Globalization
http://dx.doi.org/10.25038/am.v0i17.276 Hanan Hadžajlić Faculty of Media and Communications, Singidunum University, Belgrade, Serbia Heavy Metal and Globalization Abstract: Heavy Metal is a specific, alternative music genre that exists on the fringe of popular music, where it is classified by its own culture: musical style, fashion, philosophy, symbolic language and political activism. For over five decades of the existence of heavy metal, its fans have developed various communication systems through different types of transnational net- works, which significantly influenced the development of all aspects of metal culture, which relates both to divisions within the genre itself and to various philosophical and political as- pects of heavy metal activism – of a global heavy metal society. Going through the processes of globalization, and so glocalization, heavy metal is today a significant part of popular culture in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australia; while in some societies it represents the cultural practice of a long tradition with elements of cultural tourism, in some countries where conservative, religious policies are dominant, it represents subversive practices and encounters extreme criticism as well as penalties. Globalization in the context of the musical material itself is based on the movement from idiomatic, cultural and intercultural music patterns to trans- cultural – where heavy metal confronts the notion of one’s own genre. Post-metal, the defini- tion of a genre that goes beyond the aesthetic concepts of

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's influence (loud and sloppy garage-blues) was still felt throughout the country, as proven by the Immortal Lee County Killers in Alabama with The Essential Fuck-Up Blues (2001); the Black Keys in Ohio with The Big Come Up (2002); and by the Kills in Florida, playing the version popularized by the White Stripes on No Wow (2005). The Fiery Furnaces (4), formed by Matthew Friedberger and Eleanor Friedberger, siblings from Chicago who relocated to New York, exhibited a versatile and multi-faceted style on Gallowsbird's Bark (2003). Anti- crooning vocals and spiked guitar riffs as well as wildly unstable dynamics evoked the Rolling Stones at their most drunken/deranged, or Captain Beefheart's Magic Band fronted by Janis Joplin. At the same time the exuberant neglect of their arrangements was reminiscent of Pere Ubu. Blueberry Boat (2004) stretched out into longer and more ambitious songs, collages of genres and tours de force of arrangement (including electronic keyboards) that were meant to create a new form of musical theater. That form came to life on Rehearsing My Choir (2005), a work structured as a dialogue between an older woman and a younger one over a substratum of eccentric and cacophonous sounds.

Most of this equipment requires an understanding of its intended use in order to determine proper application. The “Professor” icon has been developed to help customers identify Ask OrangeTM material in printed trade publications, company literature and on its web site. The Ask Orange concept and related images are a tribute to the company’s founder, Orange F. Merwin, and his innovative ideas using magnets to remove metal contamination from various process flows. HOW TO CHOOSE AND USE METAL DETECTORS When Eriez Magnetics first opened its doors in 1942, the focus was on providing magnetic separation equipment-such as plate and grate magnets-to customers who wanted to remove tramp iron and steel from product flows. These magnetic devices, as well as others developed over the years, have proven effective at eliminating contamination by ferrous materials.
