Who was the founder of Buddhism? Were there any empires in India before the British? You will find answers to these questions and more in this course on the history of South Asia before 1857. This course will introduce you to the diverse civilizations and overlapping histories of the modern nation states of South Asia (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.) We will explore the cultural, social, and political developments in the region from the Indus Valley period to the rise of the British Empire. Coursework: The course will be made up of lectures and discussion sessions. The ​ reading assignments are listed weekly. You are required to read the assignments before attending class so you can follow lectures, ask questions and generally be prepared for discussion. We will try to leave some time for discussion each day but on those days when we have a significant reading assignment, we'll set aside much of class time for discussion of the reading. Tirthankar Roy © Tirthankar Roy June 2010 Department of Economic History London School of Economics Houghton Street London, WC2A 2AE Tel: +44 (0) 20 7955 7860 Fax: +44 (0) 20 7955 7730 Rethinking the Origins of British India: State Formation and Military-Fiscal Undertakings in an Eighteenth Century World Region1 Tirthankar Roy Abstract The paper discusses the rise of the East India Company in the contested political world of eighteenth century India, with reference to the manner in which economic power was deployed to enhance military power. It is shown that there was only one model of successful ‘military- fiscalism’ in this time, represented by the Company. The Company’s strategies, however, cannot be understood as a transplantation of European practices into India. Local factors, such as opportunism and access to the natural resources of the eastern Gangetic were important. However, institutional choices mattered, and owed in part to the Europeans’ outsider status. Introduction Comparisons between early modern Europe and Asia in political terms are of abiding interest to global historians.2 Two types of motivation drive such comparisons. One of these is to explain Europe’s precocious economic growth. And another is to explain colonization and conquest of Asian regions by Europe. The former enquiry has sometimes followed up the contrast between Europe’s competitive state systems and Asia’s empires, and suggested, as Eric Jones does, that political competition led in Europe to sovereign dependence on capital and to ‘continual borrowing and .

    UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN Department of History Fall Semester, 1992 History 449 Frykenberg THE EMERGENCE OF INDIA UNDER COMPANY RAJ The main focus is upon processes by which many communities of very different peoples within the continent (or subcontinent) of India (South Asia) formed enduring political relationships and, in the so doing, entered into relationships with peoples from outside the continent. Of central concern are events leading to political integration or disintegration. Underlying structures of political loyalty and stability are questions about cultural and social discontinuities. Also of special concern are conflicting visions of the past: differing concepts and visions about the nature of mankind and about the nature of such elements as power, time, change, and destiny. In other words, how did 'India' as we now know it come into being? How was it possible for so many kinds of people, speaking so many different languages, and holding such conflicting values to be incorporated within a single' commonwealth'? What incredients went into the making of what eventually became the Indian Empire -- and, thereby, gradually came to form those political systems now known as the Republic of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka? The story begins with the Mughals, the Marathas, and various regional kingdoms and principalities. These gradually gave way before the rising power of Europeans, culminating in a strange and unique Anglo-Indian contraption: a commercial and socio-political amalgam which came to be known as "Company Raj". It was the East India Company which constructed the Indian Empire; and, thereby, brought 'India' into being. This early modem empire, in turn, became the bedrock upon which the present Republic oflndia was erected.

    ASIANetwork Exchange | Spring 2014 | volume 21 | 2 Teaching South Asia beyond Colonial Boundaries Brian Caton Abstract: Because of the methodological innovations of Subaltern Studies in the 1980s and 1990s, most historians’ familiarity with South Asian history is limited to the colonial or modern period. While the subalternist view is undoubtedly use- ful, it does not provide much help in thinking about what came before or after the colonial period. This limited context may prove to be a problem for a nonspecial- ist constructing a full course in South Asian history or adding South Asia content to a course that seeks to break down area studies or nation-state boundaries. This article provides a starting point for such an enterprise. It reviews the South Asian history textbooks available in the market and identifies some of the scholarship that would suit courses or units organized by theme or by a larger Asian geography. It also reviews some of the collections of primary sources that could be used in such coursework.     centre d’études - Inde | Asie du Sud centre for South Asian studies Raja-mandala: In the Kings’ Circle Court Society as Paradigm in India A conference organized by Emmanuel Francis (CEIAS) and Raphaël Rousseleau (Université de Lausanne) with the support of the CEIAS and the musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac (département de la recherche et de l’enseignement). In Western perception, Indian Rajas often call to mind a faded luxury, while the Indian society continues to be grasped mostly through castes inequalities or the textual Hindu tradition. Hindu kingship has been abundantly investigated, notably the relationship between kings and Brahmins (Jan Heesterman), or, from a wider perspective, between political power and socio-religious institutions and values (Louis Dumont). With the development of regional studies, the debate shifted towards the nature of the state in ancient India. Several models have been put forward: feudalism (R.S. Sharma), bureaucratic state (K.A.N. Sastri), segmentary state and ritual sovereignty (Burton Stein, Richard Fox), integrative state according to a processual model (B.D. Chattopadhyaya, Hermann Kulke), imperial formation (Ronald Inden). Moreover, as a counterpoint to structural perspectives, anthropological and ethno-historical researches stressed the pivotal role of kingship in Indian society (Nicholas Dirks, Jean-Claude Galey), by “rediscovering” the works of Arthur Maurice Hocart. More recently, Daud Ali opened a new avenue for research, in testing the relevance of Norbert Elias’ concept of court society to India while acknowledging Michel Foucault’s contributions about the state apparatus. These have helped placing the research on Indian kingship “against wider historical processes, social, economic, and religious.” The aim of the present conference is not to revive debate about the nature of kingship in India, but rather to approach the court society (beyond the king) as a set of relations and practices, in other words to consider kingship as a civilisation model.

From its origins among colonial administrators to its present-day habitation in educational institutions, the study of the medieval in South Asia has been vexed by issues of chronological uncertainty, obscurantism, communal distortion and heavy model building. Though introduced to India during the colonial encounter, the idea of the medieval, and the periodization upon which it rests, quickly became essential 1 chronological attributes of the nation and the presupposition of its sovereignty. Recently, after weathering the storms of anthropological civilizationalism, ethno-history and subalternism, South Asia before colonialism has seen renewed interest. This has in part been connected to innovative work in eighteenth-century history and the related assertion of an ‘early modern’ period for South Asia. But the substantive relations between this epoch and the medieval are anything but clear. We find ourselves in the curious position where medieval South Asia for many historians ends some two hundred 2 years after when for others the early modern is thought to have begun! It may be useful to begin with the issue of terminology. Because terms like ‘medieval’ came to be used in writing about South Asia as part of the wider adoption of western historical categories during the colonial period, it may seem tempting, following the trend of some recent critique, to question their relevance for understanding the South Asian past.

Aesthetics of Sovereignty: The Poetic and Material Worlds of Medieval Jainism Abstract "Aesthetics of Sovereignty" explores how premodern religious communities employed narrative as a site to imagine ideal political worlds in ways that exceeded the capacity of formal philosophical and politico- theoretical discourse. Taking the Digambara Jain community of the ninth and tenth-century western Deccan as my primary focus, I argue that Jains theorized, modeled, and continually revised what it meant to be both a king and a Jain through literary and material improvisations with the narrative of the first Tīrthaṅkara Ādinātha (a genre known as the Ādipurāṇa). From the proposition that worldly sovereignty culminates in renunciation in Jinasēna’s Ādipurāṇa (c. 860 C.E.) and the devolution of courtly erotic love into devotional affect in Pampa’s Ādipurāṇaṃ (941 C.E.), to the vision of an ideal king as Jain devotee in the Cāvuṇḍarāya Purāṇaṃ (978 C.E.), my dissertation tracks shifting Jain experiments with language, genre, and artistic mediums that reflect broader attempts to imagine ideal worlds structured around perfected notions of worldly and spiritual sovereignty.
