  • Tannat: Home Away from Home
feature / vinifera / Tannat TANNAT: HOME AWAY FROM HOME From Tannat’s contested South American debut, back to its origins in southwest France, and forward to its latest outposts in New Zealand, Julia Harding MW charts the rise of this climate-sensitive and terroir- transparent grape variety, now producing a thrilling range of wines orget the tango and dulce de leche, the competitive debate now simmering concerns Tannat’s first home in South America. Those waving the Argentine flag claim that the variety was brought to their country toward the end of the 19th century byF the Basque farmer Juan Jáuregui (born in Irouleguy in 1812), who traveled from Bordeaux to Montevideo in 1835, moving north to Salto before crossing the River Uruguay and settling in Concordia in the province of Entre Ríos in southern Argentina, immediately opposite the Uruguayan town of Salto. According to Alberto Moroy, a specialist in Argentinian and Uruguayan history, writing in Uruguay’s national newspaper El Pais in March 2016, Jáuregui planted the first Tannat cuttings in Concepción in 1861, brought over from France by his nephew Pedro Jáuregui. They apparently came via his paternal grandfather from the estate of Louis XVI. (Moroy’s account is based on a book by Frenchman Alexis Pierre Louis Edouard Peiret, A visit to the Colonies of the Argentine Republic, published in Buenos Airesin 1889.) Jáuregui was also the first to make wine in Concordia. The story continues with another Basque, Don Pascual Harriague (1819–94), who emigrated from Lapurdi (Labourd) to Uruguay in 1838 and settled in Montevideo. In 1840 he moved north to Salto, which is where he became interested in farming and eventually in grape-growing.

German Red Wines – Steve Zins 11/12/2014 Final Rev 5.0 Contents • Introduction • German Wine - fun facts • German Geography • Area Classification • Wine Production • Trends • Permitted Reds • Wine Classification • Wine Tasting • References Introduction • Our first visit to Germany was in 2000 to see our daughter who was attending college in Berlin. We rented a car and made a big loop from Frankfurt -Koblenz / Rhine - Black forest / Castles – Munich – Berlin- Frankfurt. • After college she took a job with Honeywell, moved to Germany, got married, and eventually had our first grandchild. • When we visit we always try to visit some new vineyards. • I was surprised how many good red wines were available. So with the help of friends and family we procured and carried this collection over. German Wine - fun facts • 90% of German reds are consumed in Germany. • Very few wine retailers in America have any German red wines. • Most of the largest red producers are still too small to export to USA. • You can pay $$$ for a fine French red or drink German reds for the entire year. • As vineyard owners die they split the vineyards between siblings. Some vineyards get down to 3 rows. Siblings take turns picking the center row year to year. • High quality German Riesling does not come in a blue bottle! German Geography • Germany is 138,000 sq mi or 357,000 sq km • Germany is approximately the size of Montana ( 146,000 sq mi ) • Germany is divided with respect to wine production into the following: • 13 Regions • 39 Districts • 167 Collective vineyard

  • Pinotfile, Vol 6, Issue 54
PINO: Price is no object PinotFile Volume 6, Issue 54 The First Wine Newsletter Exclusively Devoted to Pinotphiles March 3, 2008 Inside this issue: Santa Maria Valley In a quest to try to satisfy my pinotlust, I traveled recently to the Santa Maria Valley Ambullneo 7 and discovered a region that is quietly, but quickly, becoming a major destination Cottonwood Canyon 10 for wine enthusiasts. Located in the northernmost reaches of Santa Barbara Bianchi Winery 14 County, it is an appellation that has been overshadowed by its neighbors to the Kenneth Volk Vnyds 15 south, the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Rita Hills, whose popularity has been fueled by the post-Sideways Pinot craze. Part of Sideways was actually filmed on the Small Sips of Santa 16 Foxen Canyon Wine Trail in Santa Maria Valley but this has been largely unrecog- Maria Valley nized. To the north, the nearby Arroyo Grande Valley and Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo County have assumed more notoriety for cool-climate wine enthusiasts, in Pinot Briefs 18 part because of a more publicized and established wine growing history, and in Long & Winding 20 part due to the close proximity to the town of San Luis Obispo. Pinot Road, Part VI The Santa Maria Valley encompasses the cities of Santa Maria and Guadalupe and includes the unincorporated communities of Orcutt, Sisquoc and Tepusquet. The Valley is tucked between the Sierra Madre Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean coastline to the west. 25% of Santa Barbara County’s population resides here and Santa Maria recently eclipsed its more famous neighbor to the south, Santa Barbara, in population.

  • Loxton Answers to Student Questions
1 Student questions: Chris Loxton’s colloquium on “Science and the Art of Winemaking” 1/11/17 Question 1: What are the most common mistakes that rockies make? Rookies sometimes make the mistake of making too much wine, or making a style of wine that they like, but which not enough consumers like, and in both cases, they can’t sell enough money to keep up cash flow and then get into financial difficulty. I sometimes also see inconsistency in style. Without the proper training, they make a few good wines, but then in a bad year (with rain, for example), make some mistakes and the wine quality is less, and then they can’t sell it fast enough and again this leads to cash flow problems. Question 2: I would have never guessed that the surrounding temperature and allitude has a lot to deal with what kind of wine you will be making. What areas in Arizona would be ideal for wine making? An ideal climate would have not so much rain in late summer near harvest, very little frost danger in Spring, and enough water to be able to irrigate when necessary and not be too hot in summer (the degree day requirements for grapes mean that you want just enough heat for ripening, but not too much). All this means that there are areas in the foothills south of Tucson and other areas in Southern AZ that are suitable, and some near 3000 foor elevation near Sedona, for example, that should be suitable. Question 1: What are the characteristics of a high quality grape (i.e.

  • White Zinfandel
Beringer Classics WHITE ZINFANDEL VINEYARDS The coordination between viticulture and winemaking teams is essential when choosing fruit, to achieve the optimum level of avor and balance in the wine. The vineyards selected for the Beringer Classics wines are bathed in warm sunshine the majority of the day, to yield the most ripe, sun-kissed fruit avors in the grapes. WINEMAKING NOTES Winemaking begins in the vineyard and often peaks with the harvest of the grapes that have been carefully tended all year long. Grapes for the Beringer Classics White Zinfandel were picked at the peak of maturity and brought into the winery for gentle crushing. By keeping the juice in contact with the grapes’ red skins for approximately three hours, a light blush color was retained. Beringer’s winemakers then used slow, cool fermentations to preserve the vibrant, fresh strawberry, honeydew, and citrus aromas and avors. TASTING NOTES In making Beringer’s White Zinfandel, the focus is to highlight the fresh red berry, citrus and melon aromas and avors, and round them out with subtle hints of nutmeg and clove. The wine has a youthful exuberance that is enjoyable as a sipper on its own, or with a variety of dishes. Alcohol: 10% Beringer Classics wines boast some of the best-selling wines in the country.
