A Genealogy of Antihero∗
A GENEALOGY OF ANTIHERO∗ Murat KADİROĞLU∗∗ Abstract “Antihero”, as a literary term, entered literature in the nineteenth century with Dostoevsky, and its usage flourished in the second half of the twentieth century. However, the antihero protagonists or characters have been on stage since the early Greek drama and their stories are often told in the works of the twentieth century literature. The notion of “hero” sets the base for “antihero”. In every century, there are heroes peculiar to their time; meanwhile, antiheroes continue to live as well, though not as abundant as heroes in number. The gap between them in terms of their personality, moral code and value judgements is very obvious in their early presentation; however, the closer we come to our age, the vaguer this difference becomes. In contemporary literature, antiheroes have begun to outnumber heroes as a result of historical, political and sociological facts such as wars, and literary pieces have tended to present themes of failure, inaction, uncertainty and despair rather than heroism and valour. This study argues that Second World War has the crucial impact on the development of the notion of modern antihero. As a consequence of the war, “hero” as the symbol of valour, adventure, change and action in the legends and epic poems has been transformed into “antihero” of failure and despair, especially in realist, absurdist and existentialist works written during/after the Second World War. Keywords: Antihero, Hero, Heroism, Protagonist, Romantic Hero, Second World War, Post-war Öz Anti-kahramanın Soykütüğü Edebi bir terim olarak “anti-kahraman” ya da “karşı-kahraman”, on dokuzuncu yüzyılda Dostoyevski ile edebiyata girmiştir ve kullanımı yirminci yüzyılın ikinci yarısında doruğa ulaşmıştır. -

By William Shakespeare | Directed by Annie Lareau All original material copyright © Seattle Shakespeare Company 2015 WELCOME Dear Educators, Touring acting companies already had a long history in Shakespeare’s time. Before 1576, there were no theaters in England, and so all actors would travel from town to town to perform their plays. Travel was difficult in Elizabethan England. Not only was the travel slow, but there were dangers of getting attacked by thieves or of catching the plague! Traveling troupes of actors were sponsored by the nobility, who enjoyed the entertainment they provided. They would need a license from a Bailiff to be able to travel around England performing, and these licenses were only granted to the aristocracy for them to maintain their acting troupes. The actors also needed support from their patrons to be able to wear clothing of the nobility! England’s Sumptuary Laws prohibited anyone from wearing clothing above their rank unless they were given to them and approved by their noble patron. Today, much has changed in how we tour our Shakespearean plays, but there are still many similarities between our tour and those early acting troupes. We travel from town to town across the state of Washington, battling long drives, traffic, and snow in the mountain passes to get there safely and perform for the enjoyment of our audiences. We also could not do this tour without the generous support of our own sponsors, who help underwrite our travel, support scholarships for schools in need, and help us pay for costume and set upgrades. Just like the Elizabethan acting troupes, we could not do it without support from our generous, Shakespeare-loving patrons! Thank you for booking a Seattle Shakespeare Company touring show at your school. -

Hans Christian Andersen's
HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN’S ROMANTIC IMAGINATION: Exploring eighteenth and nineteenth century romantic conceptualisations of the imagination in selected fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. ANNETTE GREYVENSTEYN submitted in accordance with the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject English Studies at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: Dr Eileen Donaldson July 2018 Abstract There are certain influences from the eighteenth and nineteenth century English and German romantic Zeitgeist that can be discerned in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. The role of the imagination stands out as a particularly dominant notion of the romantic period as opposed to the emphasis on reason during the Enlightenment. It is this romantic influence that Andersen’s tales especially exemplify. For him the imagination is transcendent – one can overcome the mystery and hardship of an earthly existence by recasting situations imaginatively and one can even be elevated to a higher, spiritual realm by its power. The transcendent power of the imagination is best understood by viewing it through the lens of negative capability, a concept put forward by romantic poet, John Keats. The concept implies an “imaginative openness” to what is, which allows one to tolerate life’s uncertainties and the inexplicable suffering that forms part of one’s earthly existence by using the imagination to open up new potential within trying circumstances. In selected fairy tales, Andersen’s child protagonists transcend their circumstances by the power of their imagination. In other tales, nature is instrumental in this imaginative transcendence. The natural world conveys spiritual truths and has a moralising influence on the characters, bringing them closer to the Ultimate Creator. -

Doctor of Philosophy (English), May, 1995, 191 pp., works consulted, 135 titles. Romantic heroes are questers, according to Harold Bloom and Northrop Frye. Whether employing physical strength or relying on the power of the mind, the traditional Romantic hero invokes questing for some sense of self. Chapter 1 considers this hero- type, but is concerned with defining a non-questing British Romantic hero. The Romantic hero's identity is problematic and established through contrasting narrative versions of the hero. This paper's argument lies in the "inconclusiveness" of the Romantic experience perceived in writings throughout the Romantic period. Romantic inconclusiveness can be found not only in the structure and syntax of the works but in the person with whom the reader is meant to identify or sympathize, the hero(ine). Chapter 2 explores Byron's aesthetics of literary equivocation in The Giaour. -

Is the Twilight Saga a Modern-Time Fairy Tale? a Study of Stephenie Meyer’S Source Material from Folklore and Canonical Narratives
Shiri Rosenberg Is the Twilight Saga a Modern-Time Fairy Tale? A Study of Stephenie Meyer’s Source Material from Folklore and Canonical Narratives Abstract: The article presents an analysis of Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels as modern literary fairy-tales. To this end, the discussion will refer to structuralist critics, and identify “narrative functions” from folktales (stock images and episodes, stock character functions, characteristic sequences of episodes), used by Meyer in her vampire novels. As it turns out, Meyer modified folklore material to sustain a long and variously themed narrative: by embedding numerous subplots, by rearranging functions between characters, and creating composite and collective characters that combine contradictory functions. The author transformed several folktales into a series of four novels about coming of age in the twenty-first-century United States. A detailed analysis of Meyer’s modifications of the folktale partially corroborates the feminist critique of Meyer’s representation of the protagonists as reinforced versions of cultural stereotypes and gender roles. However, some transformations, especially Meyer’s assignment of the hero-function to the female protagonist Bella, seem to suggest just the opposite, thus leading to the conclusion that the Twilight novels reflect the confusion caused by contradictory role-models and aspirations, the confusion that seems to be inherent in a coming-of-age novel. Keywords: Stephanie Meyer, Twilight, fairy tale, folklore, structuralism “I decided it didn’t matter. It doesn’t matter to me what you are.” —Bella Swan in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight In his seminal 1977 monograph on the literary fairy tale (Kunstmarchen), Jens Tismar set down the principles for a definition of the genre: firstly, it can be differentiated from the oral folk tale (Volksmarchen) because it is written by an author, rather than developed as folk tradition.
