The photo shows only three runways, which dates it sometime earlier than May 1945 when construction of Runway Four was completed. North Field was designed for an entire wing of B-29 Superfortresses, the 313th Bombardment Wing, with hardstands to park 265 B-29s. Each of the parallel runways stretched more than a mile and a half in length. Around and between the runways were nearly eleven miles of taxiways. Northern Mariana Islands HEALTH SITUATION (Commonwealth of the) The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is one of five inhabited United States island territories. It comprises of four inhabited islands (Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Pagan) and 10 uninhabited ones. The population was 53 883 in 2010, with 90% of people living in the capital of Saipan. Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) were the leading causes of death in the Northern Mariana Islands from 2011 to 2014. Diseases of the circulatory system accounted for 252 deaths (33%), cancers accounted for 133 (18%), endocrine, nutritional and metabolic disease accounted for 54 (7%), and respiratory system diseases accounted for 52 (7%). Poverty is also a major determinant of health in the Northern Mariana Islands. USA Abstract Sarigan Island (c.500 ha) is one of the 15 Mariana Islands in the tropical western Pacific Ocean. The native forest on Sarigan was in an advanced state of decline due to the presence of feral goats (Capra hircus) and pigs (Sus scrofa). During January and February 1998, 68 pigs and 904 goats were removed by helicopter shooting, ground shooting, trapping, and tracking with dogs. The goal was to stop and reverse the loss of forest and accompanying erosion and thus improve habitat for the endangered Micronesian megapode (Megapodius laperouse) and other native species. Follow-up control in 1999 and 2000 removed an additional six goats. Sarigan Island is now considered free of feral ungulates. Vegetation monitoring before and after eradication shows an increase in plant species richness, an increase in tree seedlings, and the rapid expansion of the introduced vine Operculina ventricosa. Skinks also increased, but numbers of fruit bats, land birds, and rats have not yet showed change. It is still undetermined as to what effect the vine Operculina ventricosa will have on the regeneration and expansion of the native forest. Keywords Vegetation; megapode; Operculina ventricosa. David Bishop Tour Summary Rockjumper’s inaugural tour of the islands of the Southwest Pacific kicked off in style with dinner at the Stamford Airport Hotel in Sydney, Australia. The following morning we were soon winging our way north and eastwards to the ancient Gondwanaland of New Caledonia. Upon arrival we then drove south along a road more reminiscent of Europe, passing through lush farmlands seemingly devoid of indigenous birds. Happily this was soon rectified; after settling into our Noumea hotel and a delicious luncheon, we set off to explore a small nature reserve established around an important patch of scrub and mangroves. Here we quickly cottoned on to our first endemic, the rather underwhelming Grey-eared Honeyeater, together with Nankeen Night Herons, a migrant Sacred Kingfisher, White-bellied Woodswallow, Fantailed Gerygone and the resident form of Rufous Whistler. As we were to discover throughout this tour, in areas of less than pristine habitat we encountered several Grey-eared Honeyeater by David Hoddinott introduced species including Common Waxbill. And so began a series of early starts which were to typify this tour, though today everyone was up with added alacrity as we were heading to the globally important Rivierre Bleu Reserve and the haunt of the incomparable Kagu. We drove 1.3 hours to the reserve, passing through a stark landscape before arriving at the appointed time to meet my friend Jean-Marc, the reserve’s ornithologist and senior ranger. -

COMMONWEALTH OF THE NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS–WHO Country Cooperation Strategy 2018–2022 OVERVIEW The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is one of five inhabited United States island territories. It spans 464 square kilometres and comprises four inhabited islands (Saipan, Tinian, Rota and Pagan) and 10 uninhabited ones. The population was 53 883 in 2010, with 90% of people living in the capital of Saipan. The Constitution of the Commonwealth was adopted in 1977. The three branches of the Government are Executive (headed by the governor), Legislative (Senate and House of Representatives) and Judicial. The Commonwealth’s gross domestic product rose by 3.5% in 2015, a 0.7% increase on 2014, according to data compiled by the United States Bureau of Economic Analysis. Economic growth is attributed to flourishing tourism, the gaming industry and the amusement sector. HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT Public Law 16-51 (2009) transferred the national health system to the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation (CHCC), a public entity that is headed by a chief executive officer. The Corporation consists of a primary hospital, a modernized haemodialysis facility, a community health centre, rural health centres in Rota and Tinian, public health services, and behavioural health services. There are also four private health clinic groups. The majority of the physicians are from the United States of America, and there are five times more nurses than physicians. The Government is supportive of increased training opportunities for local health-care staff. The Medicaid programme, a federal–state shared insurance for the poor, covers only American citizens. Poverty is a major determinant of health. -

Worthy,2,5 Stuart Hawkins,3 Stuart Bedford,4 and Matthew Spriggs 4 Abstract: The avifauna of the Teouma archaeological site on Efate in Vanuatu is described. It derives from the Lapita levels (3,000 – 2,800 ybp) and immedi- ately overlying middens extending to ~2,500 ybp. A total of 30 bird species is represented in the 1,714 identified specimens. Twelve species are new records for the island, which, added to previous records, indicates that minimally 39 land birds exclusive of passerines were in the original avifauna. Three-fourths of the 12 newly recorded species appear to have become extinct by the end of Lapita times, 2,800 ybp. The avifauna is dominated by eight species of columbids (47.5% Minimum Number Individuals [MNI ]) including a large extinct tooth- billed pigeon, Didunculus placopedetes from Tonga, and a giant Ducula sp. -

Coral Reef Status Report for the Northern Mariana Islands
1 Coral reef condition: 20 8 A status report for the FAIR NORTHERN MARIANA ISLANDS Coral reefs are important Healthy coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems on Earth, with high cultural and economic significance. Located in the western Pacific basin, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is made up of 14 islands extending over 600 kilometers. Coral reefs are important to the people of CNMI because they provide traditional and subsistence uses, production of commercial food products, recreational opportunities for a healthy tourist economy, and physical protection from storms. Culture and Food The indigenous ethnic groups of the Marianas, the Chamorro and Carolinian, are closely tied to the natural environment. Surveys indicate that about 96% of residents who go fishing, do so to feed their families. Ancient Chamorros and Carolinians were expert fishermen with inherent knowledge of harvesting reef fish species such as tàtaga (unicornfish), mafute’ (emperor), and palakse’ (parrotfish). Traditional fishing methods such as Trianni Mike spearfishing and talaya (throw-net) help preserve the cultural identity of the islands. The connection between coral reefs and society is integral as the reefs provide habitat for most species as well as numerous ecosystem services, including protection of culturally significant areas along the CNMI coastlines. Surveys of CNMI residents indicate that 91% of respondents agree that coral reefs are important to their culture (NOAA National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science 2018). In addition to providing food, shelter, and cultural significance for the citizens of CNMI, the coral reefs generate revenue from tourists and recreational users that are attracted to the beauty of the coral and its inhabitants.
