Drawing on her own recollections and first-hand accounts of others who knew him, Teddie Dahlin completes the picture of a man who never outran his demons but who, in the process, gave a lot of pleasure and some little anguish to those who surrounded him. Born in East End London, Holton became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company at an early age before joining a touring production of Hair, prior to pursuing long-harboured musical ambitions. While Heavy Metal Kids never did reach the heights predicted for them, there was a number one solo single in Europe and an invitation to front AC/DC that was declined. He would, however, become a fixture of British TV as the first actor cast in the hugely successful Auf Wiedersehen, Pet , his portrayal of the flamboyant, womanising Cockney carpenter Wayne Norris drawing heavily on his own experiences and outlook. Before he succumbed, in murky circumstances, to a cocktail of alcohol and morphine, brought low by unpaid tax bills and bankruptcy proceedings, he would be a key part of an incestuous and hedonistic social circle in London, his propensity for alcohol and drug consumption sadly unchecked by wiser counsel.     The Impact of Thatcherism on Representations of Work and Unemployment in Television Drama from 1979 to 1994 by Helen Louise Davis Institute of Education University of London June 1999 Submitted for Examination for Degree of PhD 1 Abstract This thesis argues for an analysis of popular television in relation to the dominant political ideas and values of Thatcherism. Examining the power of popular entertainment genres to inscribe and inform public understanding of political debates, the thesis offers an analysis of television realism in relation to genres such as situation comedy and drama serials. Using the work of Antonio Gramsci, Stuart Hall, Michel Foucault, Roland Barthes and the Bakhtin Circle, the methodology concentrates on a discursive model of interpretation which draws on elements of semiotic and discourse analysis. It refers to the field of hermeneutics in order to address some of the problems of textual analysis and considers the ontological problems of television realism, particularly as they relate to the representation of political ideas. The thesis also considers the role of realism as an important ideological feature of dramatic representation on television. The contribution of the thesis to the field of Media Studies lies in its engagement with the sphere of political discourse in relation to popular television programmes over a specific period of intense ideological activity. In choosing to examine Thatcherite discourse in relation to work and unemployment, the thesis considers issues of class and gender in relation to changing attitudes to unemployment as expressed through narrative and other discursive patterns in the medium of television drama. The thesis argues that television drama of the period responded to the dominant rhetoric of Thatcherite politics concerning work and unemployment with a variety of identifiable structures and dramatic strategies.

PB: For anyone in the UK not familiar with what you do, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little about your music? KN: We are called Arabrot and we are a Norwegian noise rock act. We’ve been going for ten years this year. We’re a touring band and we’ve released five albums. We’re touring at the moment to promote our latest, 'Solar Anus'. Critically it’s gone down very well. PB: Do you prefer touring or being in the studio? KN: Those two worlds are so different – it’s very hard to compare them. For me personally and artistically the most important thing is to produce something. Create some art, whatever. Your mission is to put stuff out there. I’m comfortable with touring – I enjoy it very much. But like I said before, it’s very hard to compare the two aspects as they are the opposite of each other. Ironically given that Led Zeppelin is one of Underwood's favourites, he declined as his career was developing with Episode Six that featured amongst its ranks, Ian Gillan and Roger Glover. After Gillan and Glover quit Episode Six to join Deep Purple, Underwood created the iconic progressive leanings of Quatermass whose one and only self-titled album has become one of the most collectible records of its genre. When legendary British band Free split, vocalist Paul Rodgers called on Underwood for his new creation Peace. Sadly Rodgers soon re-formed Free, leaving the Peace recordings in the can, although one track appeared on the compilation 'The Free Story'.
