It goes without saying that it's brilliant. Whilst I give it five stars, however, the ending seems a teeny bit, ever so slightly, abrupt. Other than that: characterisation, superb. Use of English language, already classified as Wodehouse The Old Reliable therefore skilful and elegant. And plot, classic Wodehouse. Everyone around Adela Cork's home is poor except for Adela Cork who's rolling in the stuff. The Old Reliable brother-in-law Smedley's dreams hinge on the diary of Carmen Flores, the movie star who originally owned the Cork home and led a wild life. Smedley's The Old Reliable goes that he could blackmail any number of people thanks to the information in this diary. He just has to find where Flores hid it Bill a. What shall we do? Why, help Smedley find the diary and then touch him for that measly sum, of course. But they don't reckon on Phipps, the evil genius. The Old Reliable nice to know that a Wodehouse book need not contain a Bertie, a Baxter, an The Old Reliable, or a perfunctory P to be uproarious. This happens to include a woman named Bill, a former queen of the silent screen, and Phipps, who I have on good authority is not the world's only safe-cracking butler in retrospect, why shouldn't there be dozens of safe-cracking butlers? If I'm rooting for the slightly barmy characters that people a novel, I'm much more likely to have a good time. Never mind that the plot is a bit slender as it allows for more humorous turns of phrase and pithy descriptions at which Wodehouse was the master. As I've worked my way through the complete works of PG and moved into the s, I've started to worry that I'm too far into the downhill side of his career for too many more really The Old Reliable novels. Spring Fever, a less funny version of this book really, Nothing Serious with its unfunny golf stories and even the Wooster novel The Mating Season were decent reads but lacking that sparkle that makes Wodehouse such a wonderful read. Fortunately the riotous Uncle Dynamite and the sparkling humor of Old Reliable have given me hope for the last 25ish works of fiction in The Master's amazing career. It is chock full of the typical Woodhousian farcical situations, but none of the characters is particularly likable, and the story doesn't build to a logical by the standards of P. Wodehouse climax. There are no great moments, and one senses by the midway point that this story really isn't going anywhere. Still, it's never dull, The Old Reliable the author has a way with words that can't help but amuse. Incidentally, I have never encountered The Old Reliable Wodehouse story with more references to contemporary celebrities. Given that many of the leading characters are or were involved in the movie industry, this makes a certain amount of sense. But it's almost as if the author made a conscious decision The Old Reliable pepper the text with the names of movie, TV, and literary notables. This in no way detracts from the story it may, in fact, ADD The Old Reliable the reader's enjoymentbut I did find it curious. Pretty sure this The Old Reliable my first Wodehouse without any of the The Old Reliable characters. Enjoyed it very much. This one stands out for being set in California instead of England, though an English butler The Old Reliable prominently and one of Wodehouse's typical goofy young English upper-class men also features, somewhat less prominently. What's not to like about any P. Wodehouse story? I did find it to be very similar to Wodehouse's "Spring Fever," which I read recently -- many of the same plot elements. But that's OK, because, really, do we read Wodehouse for Wodehouse's great character development anyway? No, we do not. We read Wodehouse for fun and to for the tight, fun plot lines and uber-snappy dialogue! I especially loved the "Bill" character. An apt description of the author himself. The Old Reliable is a novel by P. The story is set in Hollywoodand follows the romantic and financial difficulties The Old Reliable various film stars, writers, movie moguls, butlers and safe-crackers. Former actress Adela Cork owns the Beverly Hills property known as the Carmen Flores place, after the famous and tempestuous The Old Reliable actress who previously owned the house. Flores was killed in a plane crash the previous year. The will of Adela's late wealthy husband Alfred says Adela should support his impecunious brother Smedley, though she merely lets him live in her house. Smedley dislikes living with Adela, who makes him drink yoghurt instead of cocktails. Adela's sister Bill, a former scriptwriter, is ghostwriting Adela's memoirs. Adela's impeccable butler Phipps is nervous that Bill, who was part of the jury that sentenced him to prison for safecracking a few years ago, will tell Adela about his past which he has kept secret, but she promises not to tell. Smedley hopes to find the late Carmen Flores's diary. He believes she wrote about her affairs with men who would pay to have it suppressed. Bill thinks Smedley needs looking after and wants to marry him, but Smedley has doubts about marriage. Kay likes him but turns him down because she thinks he is not serious. They both separately go to California. Bill suggests to Joe that they buy her literary agent's business for twenty thousand dollars. Bill The Old Reliable Joe to fund the purchase, since he won a radio jackpot, but he explains that he has nearly spent all his winnings. Joe later meets Smedley, who looks rich, and gives him a car ride hoping for money. Adela has invited Kay and the rich Lord Topham to her house, hoping The Old Reliable will marry. Adela gives Phipps notice for looking around in her bedroom against her orders. He tells Bill that he was looking for the valuable diary of the late Carmen Flores, and has not found it. Joe comes to the house, having been invited by Smedley while they were out drinking. Smedley was celebrating because he found the diary, which is written in Spanish, on top of Adela's The Old Reliable. He has been offered fifty thousand dollars for it. By pretending to help translate it, Adela tricks Smedley into giving her the diary. Bill reveals to Smedley, Kay, and Joe that Phipps is a safecracker, and suggests that he get the diary from Adela's safe. Phipps's cut will be five thousand dollars. He agrees. Late that night, they assemble to steal the diary. However, Phipps has been hired The Old Reliable movie mogul Jacob Glutz to play butler roles, and is unwilling to risk being caught burgling. Bill comes up with the idea to give Phipps strong drinks and taunt him into burgling the safe by suggesting he has lost his skill. Phipps becomes drunk and remarkably less formal, then goes to break open the safe after being taunted by Bill. Kay tells Bill that she loves Joe but thinks his proposals are The Old Reliable flippant, though Bill thinks he is just shy. Phipps fails to focus on his task and argues in a disjointed way with Smedley and Joe before falling asleep. Joe tells Bill he is too shy to propose to Kay seriously. Bill knocks Joe out with her only Mickey Finn drug, planning to make Kay sympathetic to him. Bill wakes up Phipps, who does not remember The Old Reliable from when he was drunk. She claims Phipps knocked out Joe. Kay sees Joe unconscious and instantly goes to his side, as The Old Reliable planned. Joe recovers, and is happily surprised that Kay returns his feelings. Phipps apologizes and works on the safe. Smedley inadvertently makes noise and wakes up Adela. Adela investigates but is stopped by Bill, who stalls by talking to Lord Topham. Topham loves Gladys "Toots" Fauntleroy, but they had an argument about her new hat. He sent a cable to England apologizing and The Old Reliable her reply. A sergeant and patrolman arrive, having been telephoned by Adela. Bill again stalls by talking to the policeman about their ambition to become actors. Bill keeps them occupied long enough for Phipps to finish his task and dismiss the The Old Reliable. However, Phipps refuses to give Smedley the diary and keeps it. Topham learns that Toots loves him still, The Old Reliable him very amenable, but he cannot lend Bill the money she needs for the literary agency because he can't spend his money out of England. Adela The Old Reliable Bill took the diary and telephones the police again. Bill convinces Phipps to give the diary to Smedley by pointing out that Phipps will be in trouble if the police find it. She also convinces Adela that Smedley could sue her for losing a diary he had an offer for, which would bring her bad publicity. She persuades Adela to pay him off with thirty thousand dollars, with a check made out to Bill. The two policemen return and are cheerful, having been hired as background actors. Later, Phipps says that the book he The Old Reliable to Smedley was not actually the diary, and is The Old Reliable even in Spanish. Smedley protests that it is in Spanish and gives it to Phipps to show him, but Phipps takes it and drives off.
