Dry Creek Road Healdsburg ~ California Located in the Dry Creek Valley AVA 5850 Anderson Rd, Forestville, CA 95436 www.bergmanvineyards.com PH: (707) 887-9822; FX: (866) 691-5251 Page 1 of 7 RAYMOND BURR VINEYARDS A Historical Perspective It was in the middle 1950’s on the widely acclaimed and successful television program “Perry Mason” that the two actors, Raymond Burr and Robert Benevides first met. Their friendship grew and advanced as their mutual interest in the knowledge of the cultivation and hybridization of orchids developed. Their mutual hobby began to grow in importance to them and the next logical step was to make it into a commercial venture. At the same time, Benevides had become Executive in Charge of Production for Mr. Burr’s very successful and long (8 years) running television series, “Ironside”. The two men purchased an island in Fiji where they raised coconuts and cattle and helped bring up the standard of living for the Fijian people who lived on the island. In 1976, Robert Benevides’ father, attracted by the beauty of the Dry Creek Valley and the special qualities of land with its productive soils, purchased portions of the existing Raymond Burr Vineyard Estate. Years later, Robert and Raymond planted vines on their lovely estate in 1986. Their first wines were made in 1990 under the direction of John Pedroncelli, who together with his brother, Jim, owned the Pedroncelli Winery off Canyon Road. The Raymond Burr label started in 1998. A reasonable price was set for the Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines, and over the years, prices for their Estate wines have remained the same as the original releases.

  • Many Readers Will Have Visited Sonoma County in Northern California Wine Country and Sampled the Zinfandels Made in the SubRegion Named Dry Creek Valley
Many readers will have visited Sonoma County in northern California wine country and sampled the Zinfandels made in the subregion named Dry Creek Valley. The 70+ wineries there are so small (median production is only about 4750 cases) that most sell all that they make at the “cellar door” (either in a tasting room or through Internet orders). Additionally, 150 grape growers sell fruit to these winemakers and another 80+ wineries besides. This direct sales link is vital to small wineries as it vastly reduces their costs of distribution. One result, is that there are many good wines that do not make their way onto retail shelves here, or do so only at a restricted set of outlets (basically the finer wine stores in town). To taste the gamut of Dry Creek wine making you really need to visit the area (and the ideal time is the weekend known as Passport To Dry Creek Valley each April). Notwithstanding that, sometimes the growers go out to their customers. This month, the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley brought several Dry Creek Valley winemakers to Dallas and I was fortunate to be a guest at their media event. Overall, the quality of their signature grape, Zinfandel, is higher than ever, with the overalcoholic overextracted sweet style of a decade ago replaced with wines that, while certainly bristling with power, also have complexity and the alcohol and sweetness in balance with each other and the other components. In a telling change from that ‘other’ style — these wines age. Examples from 2001 and 2004 exhibited resolved flavors and reassuring but approachable tannins that young Zinfandel usually lacks.

Few wine regions on earth can match Santa Cruz Mountains’ climates, soils and vertigo inspiring views. Set high in the mountains overlooking California’s Silicon Valley, the Thomas Fogarty Winery has been making single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet from the SCM appellation since 1981. Fogarty’s two estates are divided into micro-vineyards, ranging from .25 to 5.25 acres, based on soil and topography. All are maritime (10-18 miles to Pacific), cool-climate (Regions I and II), high-elevation (1600-2300 feet), low yielding (1-3 tons per acre) and mountainous. The winery was founded by Dr. Thomas Fogarty, a Stanford cardiovascular surgeon and world-renowned inventor. 2014 ESTATE PINOT NOIR SAN TA C R U Z MOUNTA INS VINEYARD TECHNICAL DATA Our Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir is sourced from vineyards from APPELLATION four distinct regions within the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA: the fractured 100% Santa Cruz Mountains shales of our Estate Vineyards high upon Skyline Blvd, coastal W INEGRO WER Corralitos, the cool coastal La Honda region and the Summit Rd area, Nathan Kandler which has the highest elevations in the Santa Cruz Mountains. • MODEST REVOLUTIONARIES Experimental Winemakers Duncan Meyers and Nathan Roberts Have Been Friends Since Childhood
ARNOT-ROBERTS MODEST REVOLUTIONARIES Experimental winemakers Duncan Meyers and Nathan Roberts have been friends since childhood. Adam Lechmere went to California to find out why they’re rapidly garnering a reputation as two of the state’s most exciting winemakers onversations with winemakers often turn to the conundrum of intervention and non-intervention. The American philosopher-turned-winemaker Abe Schoener of the Scholium Project has some interesting things to say on the subject. His basic C premise (he was a teacher and knows how to put ideas across) is that deciding to do nothing is just as much a decision as deciding to do something. When he leaves a barrel of Chardonnay fermenting in the sun for two years, then that is a form of intervention. The wine is always under his control. The same goes for vineyards. Any good modern winemaker will spend many hours, at all seasons, kicking dirt, talking trellising and cover crops with the vineyard manager. “To make good wine, you need good soils, a good grower, and good weather,” Nathan Roberts told me on a fine spring morning in Sonoma. Roberts and Duncan Meyers have been friends ever since fifth grade, ten or eleven years old, and have been making wine together for the best part of 15 years. Arnot-Roberts has had a slow gestation:“We had seven years with no pay,” Meyers says. They kept their day jobs for those years: Meyers—whose grandfather was an RAF man from Fife in Scotland—working for John Kongsgaard and then at Pax Wine Cellars; and Roberts—a grandson of Robert Mondavi’s widow Margrit— following his father into the family cooperage.

  • Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
SONOMA COUNTY CABERNET SAUVIGNON For more than three decades, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series remains the ultimate expression of artistry and ne winemaking by blending the nest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma County. THE ARTIST Clare E. Rojas (born 1976) tells stories though painting, music, installations and video work. Her narratives used to be based in folk art tableaus that tackled gender stereotypes. Recently she has moved into pure geometric abstractions. She sees them as part of a continuum free of limitations and tied to her interest in color, line, shape and space. The geometric abstractions reference West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art. “For me the shift to abstraction was personal. There are a couple of challenges I find in abstraction. One is letting go of the idea that the viewer is supposed to perceive my work one way. There is no right or wrong way to look at the work.” Based in San Francisco, CA Clare takes inspiration for her art from her surroundings. For the Untitled piece featured on the 2013 label, Clare was moved to capture the reflection of light and shadow of a landscape over the course of a day, capturing time in moments. THE VINEYARDS Since its first vintage in 1975, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series has SONOMA COUNTY LAKE SONOMA represented the “best of the best” of our Cabernet Sauvignon. Each year ROCKPILE SONOMA COAST select vineyards located throughout Sonoma County’s premier Cabernet Sonoma County appellations are picked at the peak of flavor and then carefully crushed, DRY CREEK FORT ROSS VALLEY ALEXANDER VALLEY fermented, and aged.

  • 2011 HARVEST UPDATE: Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley® Positive Despite Rains
2011 HARVEST UPDATE: Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley® Positive Despite Rains October 17, 2011 – Healdsburg, CA: Hit by unexpectedly heavy rains that showered Sonoma County and most of California throughout early October, Dry Creek Valley winegrowers remain positive about the vintage, especially for its two signature grape varieties: Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc. Due to the wet spring and cool summer, Dry Creek Valley Sauvignon Blanc yields were light but resulted in optimal fruit. Duff Bevill, a long-time Dry Creek Valley grower and Managing Partner at Bevill Vineyard Management, commented, “We picked 99% of our Sauvignon Blanc before the rains, and quality was outstanding. We had a long, cool growing season like 2010, which resulted in incredible fruit. Some of my buyers told me this year’s Sauvignon Blanc was the best quality fruit they could remember.” Dubbing the vintage an “A+ for Sauvignon Blanc,” Bevill was also optimistic about Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, remarking, “At the north end of the valley, we picked all of the Zinfandel before the rain. It’s warmer there than at the southern end, so we saw really good flavor profiles and maturity. At the southern end, we picked a little early for some winemakers’ preference, but I think we timed it just right and let it hang as long as possible. We were right on the line, finishing picking just as it started to drizzle.” Lambert Bridge winemaker, Jill Davis, was equally positive about her white wines, calling the Viognier “stupendous” and commenting, “The Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah came in ripe and delicious – all before the first rain.
