15 LC 39 0822 Senate Resolution 68 By: Senator Harper of the 7th A RESOLUTION 1 Recognizing and commending Mr. Dave Prater of the legendary Sam & Dave music duo; and 2 for other purposes. 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Dave Prater was born on May 9, 1937, in Ocilla, Georgia, and sang in the 4 choir at Mt. Olive, AME Church; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Prater played in soul and rhythm and blues clubs throughout the 1950's 6 before he formed the duo Sam & Dave with Sam Moore after meeting at a talent contest at 7 the King of Hearts Club in Miami, Florida; and 8 WHEREAS, the duo released several gospel/soul type rhythm and blues hits including, "Hold 9 On! I'm Comin'," "You Got Me Hummin'," "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby," 10 "Soul Man," and "I Thank You"; and 11 WHEREAS, the duo parted ways in 1970 but continued to reunite for shows and concerts, 12 to the delight of their devoted fans; and 13 WHEREAS, Sam & Dave were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993; and 14 WHEREAS, Mr. Prater's exemplary music career is in keeping with the proudest tradition 15 of music history and reflects great credit upon him, his family, and the City of Ocilla; and 16 WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the impressive career of this 17 distinguished Georgian be appropriately recognized. 18 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body 19 recognize the numerous accomplishments of Mr. Dave Prater of the legendary Sam & Dave 20 music duo. Eric Anderson, Ginny Sim La Sierra University, Riverside, California, USA [email protected] Abstract Around 92% of the US population dies from natural causes. However, only 49% of famous musician stars die from natural causes resulting in performance related careers being one of the most dangerous professions in the United States. According to this study, musicians were 20 times more likely to die from an addiction, four times more likely to die from an accident, six times more likely to die of homicide and four times more likely to die of suicide than the general population. Why do dangerous profession lists fail to include musicians in the high risk career list categories? It is not the profession that is dangerous, but primarily the personality type gravitating towards the profession that creates risk. Should certain personality types be directed to non-performance related careers? Probably not, since performing on stage may be a more effective intervention than psychiatric treatment. The purpose of my visit was to listen to old recording sessions from the 1960s and '70s that took place at the long-gone Stax Records recording studio, once located in Memphis, Te nn. Stax went bankrupt back in 1975, and Fantasy had acquired most of its assets, including the original master tapes of such hits as "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay," "Soul Man" and "Theme From Shaft." This was my third visit to Fantasy to listen to the Stax tapes. The five-story Fantasy Records build ing, located in Berkeley, just across the bay from San Francisco, is somewhat modern looking, with a tinted-glass and white concrete-slab exterior. The Stax tapes are kept on the second floor, in a vault-like room behind a door you'd think was for a hall closet.
