Malia Heinrich Billing Specialist I think it’s good. It gives people the freedom to enlist in the armed forces. Gay people may not like it because they would feel like they are hiding and not being truthful. Living in the Bay Area, we are much more tolerant of alternative lifestyles. Perhaps the rest of the country is not ready yet.

Dave Bailey Water Services There is some controversy within the military about it. When you are enlisted you want to do your job and duty without the distraction of whether someone is gay or not. If you open the policy it changes the way enlisted people look at each other. The military is trying to pro- tect both sides.

N has served as the president both years. The club exists to “capture and absorb” the essence of fashion and puts on a runway show once a year. Now with about 20 to 30 members, together the group learns and discusses everything from fab- rics to sewing technique to up-and-coming trends. Wei’s mother used to be a seamstress and made her own clothes in college. Yet, when her parents bought Wei a sewing machine her first reaction was, “Oh great, what am I going to do with that?” But eventually inspiration came to her. “You have that sudden revelation of going to make some- thing,” she said. “It can’t be a scheduled activity. You just have to wait until that moment comes.” Much of her technique is self-taught and enhanced in Amador teacher Margo Olsen’s class, Fashions and Fabrics. It was just a matter of draping fabrics, experimenting with different textures, playing around with patterns and mastering the sewing machine. For the student designer, the world is her own runway. Many of the clothes she makes herself—from her own pat- tern, she eagerly points out—and is proud to be the canvas for her original work. Just don’t expect it to consist of patchwork or look homemade. “I still think when students hear that I’m sewing my own clothes, they think of a ’50s housewife,” she said. But many of her creations have inspired others to get a sewing machine and give it a try. When it comes down to it, she works hard to incorporate personality into each outfit, so it’s both a representation of the wearer and the designer. “[Fashion is] what represents you the most,” she said, add- ing that oftentimes it can “speak” for the person. Her favorite designers include Marchesa—known for drap- ing and embodying the effortless chic Wei strives to achieve. The other, which she confesses is quite the opposite of the first, is Monique Lhuillier whose lines are feminine and playful. And then there’s Christian. Not Dior, but Christian Siriano of “Project Runway” fame. The fashion club watches the reality show, on Bravo, and discusses the fashion choices made each week. The contestant is known for his vivacious and snarky personality—and his unmistakable approach. Nicolle Woo, 13, leads the practice runway and is followed by Kiana

“His point of view is not one that I share, but I respect Janet Pelletier it,” she said. “Whenever he works with his clients he always Jackson, 13; Mary Arnold, 13; and incorporates his own elements.” Vanessa Feder, 14. As for her signature, she likes using elastic rouching because she “hates the whole idea of constriction.” Page 12ÊUÊiLÀÕ>ÀÞÊ£x]ÊÓäänÊUÊ*i>Ã>˜Ìœ˜Ê7iiŽÞ Living
