62Nd MGA Ike Stroke Play Championship 62 nd MGA Ike Stroke Play Championship Presented by Callaway CENTURY COUNTRY CLUB Purchase, N.Y. June 26 & 27, 2017 History of the Ike C hampionship The Ike Championship Presented by Callaway was founded in 1953 by Daily News sportswriter Dana Mozley and nurtured through the years by Mozley and former MGA President George Sands. Although always immensely popular, the event suffered during the late 1970s and early 1980s after the Daily News dropped its sponsorship. In 1986, the MGA purchased the rights to the Ike. With the MGA’s involvement, the event regained its stature and became the area’s premier stroke-play amateur event. The Ike today attracts more entries than any other MGA championship for individuals. Despite a long list of outstanding champions — The Ike Championship including Thomas Goodwin, Robert Gardner, Willie boasts one of the MGA’s Turnesa, George Burns III, George Zahringer III, and most coveted trophies. Jeff Thomas — the Ike always will be synonymous with the name Courville. The late Jerry Courville Sr. dominated the event in the 1960s, winning a record six titles between 1961 and 1970, while son Jerry Jr. grabbed the baton with back-to-back victories in 1990 and 1991, and again in 1997. The duo also combined to win three Ike Team championships for Shorehaven Golf Club. Zahringer III holds five Ike titles. Gardner and Jonas Saxton are tied with Courville Jr. with three titles. This season will be the first time Century Country Club has hosted the Ike Championship. In 1995, it hosted the Met Amateur Championship, won by Jerry Courville, Jr. About the Ike Eligibility The competition is open to amateur golfers who are members of an MGA Member Club. A person who does not reside in the MGA territory and who is not a full-time student or employed in the MGA territory cannot join an MGA Member Club for the purpose of entering the Ike Championship. All entrants must have a current USGA Handicap Index not to exceed 5.0 under the USGA Handicap System and are subject to the MGA Rules and Regulations. Format of Play 54-hole, stroke-play championship. Field cut to low 40 & ties after 18 holes. In the event of a tie after 54 holes, the champion will be determined by a three-hole aggregate playoff, followed by sudden death if necessary. Team Championship A. The 2017 Ike Team Champions will be the two individuals representing the same club who have the lowest 54-hole combined total score. B. In the event that no club has two or more individuals who survive the 18-hole cut, the team champions will be the two individuals from the same club who have the lowest combined 18-hole total. C. MGA member clubs do not need to designate a team and are not limited to the number of individuals who may enter the championship. Note: MGA eClubs are not eligible for the Ike Team Championship. Exempt Categories (If otherwise eligible) 1. Individual Ike, Met Amateur and Met Open Champions from the last 5 years. 2. USGA Champions and members of the Walker Cup team from the last 10 years. 3. About Century County Country Club Century Country Club was formed in 1898 by a group of prominent bankers and industrialists, including Benjamin Guggenheim, who died aboard the Titanic in 1912. The club’s name was chosen because the club was created near the turn of a new century, or perhaps because membership originally was limited to 100. The Club had a nine-hole golf course in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx, fronting Long Island Sound. In 1904, Century moved to Greenburgh in Westchester County, where a clubhouse was built along with an 18-hole golf course and several tennis courts. Some members became dissatisfied with the design and Founded: size of the golf course around 1920 and so, after some dis - 1898 cussion, the Club purchased 175 acres of the George W. Course Opened: Fairchild property on Anderson Hill Road in Purchase. The 1924 Greenburgh site was sold to the Metropolis Country Club. Architects: Their new course at Century was designed by the famous H.S. Colt British architect C. H. Alison of the firm Colt & Alison, and Charles Alison opened in 1924. Course Rating:74.6 Ben Hogan came to Century in 1938. A member’s "letter Slope: 139 of recommendation" simply stated that "he made a nice appearance." Hogan became the head professional (for two years) in 1940. Final Field Past Champions are denoted in bold . • The Sport of Prince's Laddie Lucas Reflections of a Golfer
Born in the club house at the famous Prince's Golf Club, Sandwich, of which his father was the co-founder, Laddie Lucas was later to become a highly distinguished fighter pilot in the Royal Air Force during the second World War and a Member of Parliament. He also became a remarkably fine golfer and after captaining Cambridge and England he led Great Britain in the Walker Cup against the USA. In this unashamedly nostalgic book, the author describes his hobby of a lifetime - fifty years of pleasurable involvement in golf. He has been a friend or acquaintance of many of the great amateurs and pro fessionals of the period from Vardon, Ouimet and Ray to Henry Cotton and Jack Nicklaus. His perceptive pen portraits build up to form a delightful and wide ranging survey of golf since the First World War. Immersed in the game from such an early age - his nursery was the pro's shop - Laddie Lucas has not only an instinct for the game but a flair for assessing and expressing the qualities and technical skills of golfers he has observed. His analyses of some of the great golfers are particularly intriguing. In his concern for its expanding future, the author sets out new ways for the develop ment of golf as a less exclusive sport - with John Jacobs he has devoted much time over the years to the means of teaching young golfers and, as a member of the Sports Council, to widening the appeal of the game. Laddie Lucas, trained as a journalist, has picked out the features of a golfing lifetime from the standpoint of player, critic and administrator.

Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway 103rdAugust 21 - 23, 2018 Wykagyl Country Club History of the Met Open Championship Presented by Callaway From its inception in 1905 through the 1940 renewal, the Met Open was considered one of the most prestigious events in golf, won by the likes of Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Johnny Farrell, Tommy Armour, Paul Runyan, Byron Nelson, and Craig Wood, in addition to the brothers Alex and Macdonald Smith (who together captured seven Met Opens, with Alex winning a record four times). The second edition of the championship was hosted and sponsored by Hollywood Golf Club, when George Low won in 1906. After an eight-year hiatus overlapping World War II, the Met Open became more of a regional championship, won by many of the top local club professionals, among them Claude Harmon, Jimmy Wright, Jim Albus, David Glenz, Bobby Heins and Darrell Kestner, not to mention such storied amateurs as Chet Sanok, Jerry Courville Sr., George Zahringer III, Jim McGovern, Johnson Wagner, and Andrew Svoboda. The purse was raised to a record $150,000 in 2007, giving the championship added importance. In 2015 the MGA celebrated a major milestone in marking the championship’s 100th playing, won by Ben Polland at Winged Foot Golf Club. In 2017, The MGA welcomed a new Championship Partner, Callaway Golf. Callaway Golf is the presenting sponsor of the Met Open Championship. Eligibility The competition is open to golfers who are: 1. Past MGA Open Champions. 2. PGA Members in good standing in the Metropolitan and New Jersey PGA Sections.

Americans infatuated with golf established country and golf clubs, built ornate club- houses, laid out inland park courses, experimented with new types of equip- ment, and even modified time-honored rules. Scottish and English officials resented the upstart Americans who dared to challenge the traditions and authority of the sportsmen of St. Andrews and other hallowed centers of British golf, but in the long run the British had little power to stop or even slow down the inexorable tide of change.
