62 nd MGA Ike Stroke Play Championship Presented by Callaway CENTURY COUNTRY CLUB Purchase, N.Y. June 26 & 27, 2017 History of the Ike C hampionship The Ike Championship Presented by Callaway was founded in 1953 by Daily News sportswriter Dana Mozley and nurtured through the years by Mozley and former MGA President George Sands. Although always immensely popular, the event suffered during the late 1970s and early 1980s after the Daily News dropped its sponsorship. In 1986, the MGA purchased the rights to the Ike. With the MGA’s involvement, the event regained its stature and became the area’s premier stroke-play amateur event. The Ike today attracts more entries than any other MGA championship for individuals. Despite a long list of outstanding champions — The Ike Championship including Thomas Goodwin, Robert Gardner, Willie boasts one of the MGA’s Turnesa, George Burns III, George Zahringer III, and most coveted trophies. Jeff Thomas — the Ike always will be synonymous with the name Courville. The late Jerry Courville Sr. dominated the event in the 1960s, winning a record six titles between 1961 and 1970, while son Jerry Jr. grabbed the baton with back-to-back victories in 1990 and 1991, and again in 1997. The duo also combined to win three Ike Team championships for Shorehaven Golf Club. Zahringer III holds five Ike titles. Gardner and Jonas Saxton are tied with Courville Jr. with three titles. This season will be the first time Century Country Club has hosted the Ike Championship. In 1995, it hosted the Met Amateur Championship, won by Jerry Courville, Jr. About the Ike Eligibility The competition is open to amateur golfers who are members of an MGA Member Club. The club’s name was chosen because the club was created near the turn of a new century, or perhaps because membership originally was limited to 100. The Club had a nine-hole golf course in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx, fronting Long Island Sound. In 1904, Century moved to Greenburgh in Westchester County, where a clubhouse was built along with an 18-hole golf course and several tennis courts. Some members became dissatisfied with the design and Founded: size of the golf course around 1920 and so, after some dis - 1898 cussion, the Club purchased 175 acres of the George W. Course Opened: Fairchild property on Anderson Hill Road in Purchase. The 1924 Greenburgh site was sold to the Metropolis Country Club. Architects: Their new course at Century was designed by the famous H.S. Colt British architect C. H. Alison of the firm Colt & Alison, and Charles Alison opened in 1924. Course Rating:74.6 Ben Hogan came to Century in 1938. A member’s "letter Slope: 139 of recommendation" simply stated that "he made a nice appearance." Hogan became the head professional (for two years) in 1940. Final Field Past Champions are denoted in bold .
