eNGOWorkshop conducted atKalgachia, Barpeta District of Assam eNGO Workshop | October 6, 2013 Kalgachia, Barpeta, Assam A one day workshop was conducted with an aim to empower grassroots and community organization through Information Communication and Technology (ICT) atKalgachia, Barpeta district of Assam under the National ‘eNGO / eINSTITUTION’ programme on 6th October, 2013. The programme was an initiative of Digital Empowerment Foundation, New Delhi with the support of National Internet Exchange of India and .Org.The workshop was conducted as part of nationwide eNGOprogramme by Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) using Information Communication Technology (ICT) tools including Internet. The programme was hosted by Akansha and NabadayPuthibharal, Kalgachia as local partner. Altogether 21organisationsjoined and registered forFree webhosting programme. The meeting waschaired by Dr. Nazrul Islam. Mr. MuzammilHussain, Ex. Member, Assam Public Service Commission, Dr. M. S. Shaikh, Dr. RoselineJahan, & Dr. RejaulKarim were amongst the other dignitaries present in the workshop. The objective of the programme was to empower grassroots organization with ICT and web present. This includes orientation and training on organizational management using ICTs, information and communication management, content management and web management. Mr. HarunAhmed , Regional Project Head of DEF explained in detail about the programme and also answered to the queries raised by the participants. Dr. RejaulKarim from Akanshashared his future plan to reach to more and more grass root organisations/institutions and extend the programmeto other part of Assam.More than 30 representatives from different organization and institutions took part in the programme. Under this programme one unlimited space website will be hosted for the grassroot organization in free of cost. All community based organization as school, college, educational institution, NGO, SHG, CBO,Entreprenuership groups are eligible to join this programme. .

CHAPTER-1 INTRODUCTORY REMARKS 1.1. Introduction: The contribution of women in family, society and political process along with their status and role hold the key to the development of the State, its people and the economy. But, unfortunately, women in every society are severely disadvantaged and discriminated. Social discrimination, lower economic position, low level of educational status, inequity, poverty, violence and lack of political participation in political process have been identified as issues of grave concern to South Asian women though women belonging to higher class in South Asia enjoy higher position and status in comparison to other parts of the world. Thus the position of women in Assam like other parts of India is not at all encouraging, rather it is dismal. In fact, in some respects and in some areas (Char areas) the womenfolk belonging to some cultural groups of Brahmaputra Valley of Assam are even more disadvantaged. Of course, during the last three decades the role and contribution of women and their needs have begun to be recognized. Today, gender related issue has been given due weightage and attention in almost every society. Therefore, an attempt has been made by us to undertake a detailed study regarding women's empowerment in the Char areas of Brahmaputra Valley of Assam highlighting their role in family, society and political process with special reference to Barpeta District. We have provided eight sections in this chapter including the present section. In the second section we have presented our research problem. The 3rd Section provides research gap as well as the objectives of the study on the basis of a brief review of literature.

There is no char area in the Barak Valley. The char areas of Assam are scattered over 14 districts of the Brahmaputra Valley. As for inhabitants of char areas, are generally meant those people who came from erstwhile East Bengal of undivided India before independence. They are popularly known as Charua, Pamuwa, Na-Asamiya, Miya or Maimonsingiya. The Miyas are well known as one of the diligent ethnic groups of Assam. These people constitute nearly 14% of the total population of Assam. They have accepted the Assamese language and culture without hesitation and thus extended whole hearted contribution towards forming the Assamese speaking people majority in the state.From Assamese language, culture and literature to economic and agricultural development of Assam, the contribution of these people is significant. Now, they have become the part and parcel of the greater Assamese ethnic and ethnicity. This research paper intends to provide a broad outline about the different and significance contributions of the char dwellers towards the Assamese society and its language and culture.
