I’m gonna have a Saint Patrick’s Day party at my apartment and I wanted to partie decorate it in an Irish theme. Do you have any ideas? re 1 Paddy: That sounds cool! You could use the traditional symbols of Ireland, that would be good! Lisa: What are the symbols of Ireland? Paddy: There’s quite a few! The harp is the official symbol of Ireland, which shows how important music is in its culture and traditions. It’s actually the only country in the world which has a musical instrument as its symbol. And legend has it it represents the harp of the old kings of Ireland. I’ve actually got a euro coin here. You can see it, it’s on there, it’s on the coins. Lisa: Oh yeah, that’s right! I hadn’t noticed! Paddy: So you could use that! Another symbol you could use is the shamrock, the three-leaf clover. Legend has it that Saint Patrick used that to explain the Holy Trinity, so the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Lisa: Ok, why do I always hear people talking about four-leaf clovers? Paddy: Well, there’s the phrase ‘the luck of the Irish’ because four-leaf clovers are very rare and hard to find so if you find one it’s supposed to be good luck! Lisa: Oh, I get it, ok! I also wanted to hang up an Irish flag and decorate my apartment in like the colours of the flag but what does it look like? Paddy: It’s a vertical tricolor, green, white and orange. The green represents Irish nationalism and republicanism, orange represents the protestant minority and the white represents the friendship and peace between the partie two. e 2 Lisa: Ok, well, then I’ll make sure I get those green, orange and white colours out there and I wanted to play some music. I know music is important for Irish culture but what’s their anthem? Paddy: Well, they’ve actually got two anthems. The official anthem of the Republic of Ireland isA Soldier’s Song, which is an old Irish rebel song, which is about freeing Ireland from slavery from England but sometimes, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland play together in sporting teams. So when those teams play, they use Ireland’s Call, it’s their anthem. So they play that at rugby matches, cricket matches, hockey matches, certain sports. Lisa: So, I guess rugby is a pretty important sport in Ireland but... Paddy: Yeah, that’s very popular! Lisa: What else do they play? Paddy: The most popular sports are the traditional Irish sports so Gaelic football which is a sort of a mix between football and rugby. There’s hurling which is a bit like lacrosse and then the normal sports, the average sports, football, rugby, cricket... Lisa: Ok! That sounds good! Well people at my party are gonna be hungry. So what kind of traditional Irish dishes can I make? Paddy: Well, potatoes are very popular in Ireland so you could do Irish stew, which is lamb, potatoes, onions and other vegetables. You could get some Irish salmon, Irish salmon is very good, or you could do colcannon, which is mashed potatoes mixed with spinach and kale. Lisa: Ok! What do people drink with that? partie e Paddy: The Irish are well-known for liking their alcohol so you could get some Guinness, which is a type of stout. 3 You could get Irish whiskey! You can mix that with coffee to make an Irish coffee. If people don’t want to drink alcohol, then things like tea are popular! Lisa: Ok! So I’ll go to the store and I’ll get potatoes, Guinness and I’ve got tea at home! 1 Lisa: Would you like to come up to decorate? Paddy: Yeah, definitely! Lisa: And you’ll stay for the party, right? partie e Paddy: Of course! 4 Lisa: Ok, cool! Langues en pratiques ANGLAIS Docs authentiques 2.
