Ashes of Time (Redux)
keswick film ashes of time Spring club Season 2009 a world of cinema (redux) Written and Directed by Wong Kar Wai,; Director of Photography Christopher Doyle Starring: Leslie Cheung, Brigitte Lin. Tony Leung Chui Wai, Tony Leung Ka Fai, and Maggie Cheung China/Hong Kong, 2008, 93 minutes. Directors Notes “The flag is still. The wind is calm. It’s the heart of man that is in turmoil!” (Buddhist canon) In the winter of 1992, someone suggested that I make a film adaptation of Louis Cha’s famous martial-arts novel The Eagle-Shooting Heroes. I re-read all four volumes of it and finally decided not to do an adaptation but instead to develop a new story about the early years of two of its main characters, Dongxie (Lord of the East) and Xidu (Lord of the West). I chose these two because they have exactly opposite personalities; you could think of one as the antithesis of the other. I tried to depart a little from the traditional martial-arts genre. Instead of treating these characters as heroes, I wanted to see them as ordinary people – at the stage before they became heroes. I knew where these characters were going to end up and there was nothing I could do to change it. This imbued both me and the film with a sense of fatalism. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that there are several different versions of ASHES OF TIME in circulation, some approved by me, some not, as well as the fact that the film was never released in much of the world including the United States. -

An Ideological Analysis of the Birth of Chinese Indie Music
REPHRASING MAINSTREAM AND ALTERNATIVES: AN IDEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE BIRTH OF CHINESE INDIE MUSIC Menghan Liu A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2012 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Kristen Rudisill Esther Clinton © 2012 MENGHAN LIU All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor This thesis project focuses on the birth and dissemination of Chinese indie music. Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself. -
许环良) Is Perhaps Best Known As the Record Producer Who Launched the Successful Careers of Singapore Singing Artistes Kit Chan ( 陈洁仪), JJ Lin (林俊杰), A-Do ( 阿杜), and BY2

Considered one of the most instrumental and influential figures in the Singapore music industry, Billy Koh ( 许环良) is perhaps best known as the record producer who launched the successful careers of Singapore singing artistes Kit Chan ( 陈洁仪), JJ Lin (林俊杰), A-Do ( 阿杜), and BY2. As the most recognised face from Ocean Butterflies Music Pte Ltd ( 海蝶音乐私人有限公 司), which Koh co-founded, he had, together with his team, re-shaped the landscape of the Singapore Chinese pop music scene over a span of a quarter of a century, carving a place for itself and creating a brand name that exerts an impact in Asia. In his nearly three-decade-long career, Koh has produced more than 150 albums and is credited for discovering and grooming many top artistes who made it big in Asia. For his contributions to the Singapore music industry, Koh was awarded the Meritorious Award and the Wings of Excellence Award by COMPASS in 2001 and 2005 respectively. It had all begun in 1981. Billy Koh had formed a singing group called The Straw ( 水草三重唱), together with his schoolmates, Koh Nam Seng ( 许南盛) and the late Sunkist Ng ( 黄元成), to participate in the television talent show “Chinese Talentime” ( 《斗歌竞艺》), which was one of the most watched shows then. -

Bamcinématek Presents Stephen Chow: the King of Comedy, Oct 6—12
BAMcinématek presents Stephen Chow: The King of Comedy, Oct 6—12 “The reigning king of Hong Kong comedy.”—J. Hoberman Co-presented with the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York. The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor for BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/Sep 8, 2014—From Monday, October 6 through Sunday, October 12, BAMcinématek presents Stephen Chow: The King of Comedy, an eight-film retrospective of the Hong Kong actor, writer, and director. Chow’s audaciously anarchic comedies combine surreal sight gags, non sequiturs, extensive pop culture quoting, and gravity-defying martial arts to sublimely silly effect. Endlessly inventive, the reigning king of Hong Kong mo lei tau (―nonsense comedy‖) yields unfiltered cinematic pleasure. Initially prominent as a children’s television star, Chow became synonymous with mo lei tau, a style of film comedy in which traditional melodramas and kung fu tales are peppered with rapid- fire, fourth-wall-breaking slapstick bits and corny puns. A bigger box-office draw in his homeland than Jackie Chan or Jet Li, Chow—who cites Spielberg and Kubrick, along with Jim Carrey, as influences—has used his clout in recent years to fashion himself as an auteur, scripting, editing, and directing a series of high-budget, homage-filled blockbusters. Typical of Chow’s earliest hits, Johnnie To’s Justice, My Foot! (1992—Oct 8) casts the actor as a fast-talking lawyer whose mouth gets him into trouble, and whose kung fu-fighting wife gets him out of it—one of many tough, smart heroines Chow uses as foils for his feckless alter egos. -
