Vaughan and artist Tony comics Harris’ Ex Machina (August 2004–August 2010); writer Brian Wood and artist Ground Zero Riccardo Burchielli’s DMZ (November 2005–February 2012); and writer Garth 9/11 Ennis and artist Darick Robertson’s The Boys (October 2006–November 2012). archifictions Taking literary critic Laura Frost’s concept of ‘archifictions’ as its starting point, the War on Terror article discusses how these series frame the September 11 attacks on New York and architecture their aftermath, but its primary concern is with their engagement with the larger social ramifications of 9/11 and with the War on Terror, and with how this engage- ment is rooted in and centred on Ground Zero. It argues that this rooting allows these comics’ creators to critique post-9/11 US culture and foreign policy, but that it also, ultimately, serves to disarm the critique that each series voices in favour of closure through recourse to recuperative architecture. The attacks on September 11 continue to be felt in US culture. Comics are no exception. Comics publishers, large and small, responded immediately and comics about the attacks or the War on Terror have been coming out ever since. Largely missing from these comics, however, is an engagement with Ground Zero; after depicting the Twin Towers struck or falling, artists and writers rarely give the area a second thought. -

THE EERIE PRESCIENCE OF BRIAN WOOD’S DEBUT WORK ‘CHANNEL ZERO’ [INTERVIEW] by Andy Khouri December 15, 2011 1:30 PM SHARE TWEET EMAIL REDDIT If I didn’t actually remember where I was and when I first read Channel Zero, I might have picked up the forthcoming Dark Horse special edition of Brian Wood’s debut work about a heavily tattooed techno-media revolutionary and her war to reclaim free speech and assumed it was created in direct response to some major political developments of America’s new century: the Patriot Act, the Stop Online Piracy Act, Occupy Wall Street. The truth is that Image Comics released the first issue of Channel Zero all the way back in 1998, and it’s achieved that “eerie” science fiction descriptor by depicting what has turned out to be an astonishingly on-point conflict between young people and the powers that be. Indeed, it’s pretty difficult to imagine even the esteemed Occupy Comics creators coming up with anything that reflects the spirit of rebellion as well as Brian Wood’s nearly 15-year-old opus. Wood went on to write such notable works as Vertigo’s DMZ, Northlanders, The New York Five and Demo; Oni Press’ Local; and WildStorm’s DV8: Gods and Monsters, among others. But Channel Zero is especially distinctive — not just for its own qualities and prescient subject matter, but also because CZ makes a very convenient landmark in the history of comics’ recent past. The book was a lightning rod for a very influential sect of the comics internet community; it represents an arduous, expressly DIY method of comic book-making that new technology has dramatically changed; and unlike many premiere works, CZ makes it very plain where its creator is aiming to go with his career in terms of stories, characters and aesthetics. -

IN FOCUS: Gender Identity and the Superhero Representation and Diversity in Comics Studies by ELLEN KIRKPATRICK and SUZANNE SCOTT n spring 2011, Bart Beaty broke new ground by editing the first In Focus section of Cinema Journal devoted to comics studies.1 Beaty curated a thematically important issue, concluding with a round- table on the state of comics studies—a section befitting a rapidly evolving and expanding field. However, there was a noticeable ab- Isence of matters of representation and diversity in the section’s vision of “comics studies” and an equal dismissal of studies of representation in that roundtable. To some extent, this absence is understandable, especially as the primary function of the section was to rationalize and celebrate the study of comics as a distinct media form. Though issues of representation were certainly of concern within comics scholar- ship and culture at that time, Scott Bukatman identified “representa- tion of ” studies as one of the problems “endemic to a young field.”2 In their understandable effort to privilege the “how” of comics, the panelists, however, not only marginalized “scholarly work that tends 1 “In Focus: Comics Studies: Fifty Years after Film Studies,” ed. Darieck Introduction: Scott Queer about Comics and Ramzi Fawaz There’s something queer about comics. Whether one looks to the alternative mutant kinships of superhero stories (the epitome of queer world making), the ironic and socially negative nar- ratives of independent comics (the epitome of queer antinormativity), or the social stigma that makes the medium marginal, juvenile, and outcast from “proper” art (the epitome of queer identity), comics are rife with the social and aesthetic cues commonly attached to queer life. Moreover, the medium has had a long history as a top reading choice among those “queer” subjects variously called sexual deviants, juvenile delinquents, dropouts, the working class, and minorities of all stripes. Despite this, comics studies and queer theory have remained surprisingly alienated from each other. On the one hand, classical com- ics studies’ tendency to analyze the formal codes of sequential art sepa- rately from social questions of sexual identity and embodied difference has often led to a disregard for a nuanced queer and intersectional cri- tique of the comics medium. On the other, the prevailing assumption that mainstream comics (namely, the superhero genre) embody nation- alistic, sexist, and homophobic ideologies has led many queer theorists to dismiss comics altogether or else to celebrate a limited sample of politically palatable alternative comics as exemplars of queer visual cul- ture. In this logic, “Queer zines, yes! Superhero comics, no!” This alienation—at times even antagonism—evinces a failure of recognition in the current development of scholarship rather than a true gulf between the foundational questions and concepts of the two fields. -

Typically, in a Graphic Novel, the Pictures
What is a graphic novel? A graphic novel is a book made up of words and pictures: typically, in a graphic novel, the pictures are arranged on the page in sequential panels, while the words are presented in speech bubbles (for dialogue) or text boxes (for narration), though this may not always be the case. ‘Graphic novel’ is a word that describes a medium, not a genre: graphic novels can be histories (like George O’Connor’s Journey Into Mohawk Country); fantasies (like Joann Sfar’s Vampire Loves) or anything in between. Who reads graphic novels? Everyone! The term ‘graphic’ in ‘graphic novel’ denotes the pictorial nature of the medium: it’s not an age rating. There are graphic novels for every age group, and they’re not just about superheroes— graphic novels have addressed such diverse topics as falling in love for the first time, baking bread, Shakespeare, ballet, AIDS, and paleontology. Though there may not be as many graphic novels for eighty year-old women as there are for teenagers and college-age readers, the medium has produced incredible, critically acclaimed works than span every age group. Why graphic novels? Graphic novels are astoundingly popular with kids and young adults. Not only are they great for increasing the reading comprehension and vocabulary of reluctant readers—and everyone else—but they also provide an approach to reading that reflects the multimedia nature of today’s technology- centric culture. Graphic novels integrate images and text to tell a different kind of story than would be possible with only a single medium: they’re a whole new way to read. -
