PROJECT HEROES Homeland Emergency Response Operational and Equipment Systems Task 1: A Review of Modern Fire Service Hazards and Protection Needs Presented to: National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Post Office Box 18070 626 Cochrans Mill Road Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15236 Presented by: Occupational Health and Safety Division International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) 1750 New York Avenue, N.W. Washington, DC 20006 13 October 2003 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The first task of Project HEROES was undertaken by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) to examine and define the protection needs of fire fighters and other first responders during a broad array of different missions. This task began with a review for how the fire service and its responsibilities have changed over the past 20 years since personal protective equipment (PPE) was then affected by Project FIRES. In that 20 year period, the fire service has evolved to gain responsibility for a larger number of missions. Fire suppression is no longer the chief responsibility for most fire departments, but rather responses to a wide range of missions, including emergency medical aid, technical rescue, and more recently the prospect for terrorism events involving weapons of mass destruction. As America’s fire fighters attempt to keep up with these changing roles, it is noted that the level of preparedness and PPE needed to safety carry out the different missions is often lacking. -

COVID-19 & Healthcare Workers: Heroes Or Villains?
COVID-19 & Healthcare Workers: Heroes or Villains? By Elizabeth Ziemba, JD, MPH, President, Medical Tourism Training Part 2 of 3-part series exploring the relationship between and among healthcare workers, society, patients, and the impact of COVID-19 on the delivery of healthcare services. The COVID-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented pressures on healthcare systems and healthcare professionals. What impact have these responses had on healthcare professionals and the organizations for which they work? Healthcare Professionals as Heroes People around the world are expressing their appreciation to healthcare professionals for the work that they are doing. Social media pages for hospitals and clinics are filled with messages of gratitude, examples of courage, wonderful stories, and other positive sentiments. Hospitals and clinics are inviting these messages and have created programs to celebrate Healthcare Heroes. Websites have sprung up celebrating “our heroes”.i Few people are asking doctors, nurses, and other Gardiner Anderson/for New York Daily News healthcare professionals how they think and feel about being called “heroes”. Formal research seems to have left this question unexamined; however, there are interesting responses from healthcare professionals themselves. Social media, marketing & branding Everyone likes to be thanked for doing a good job. Humans appreciate being acknowledged and praised for their contributions. Many people simply derive their own satisfaction from a job well done. Healthcare professionals, in particular, are drawn to their work because they want to help people. -
The Monument of the Eponymous Heroes in the Athenian Agora'
THE MONUMENT OF THE EPONYMOUS HEROES IN THE ATHENIAN AGORA' (PLATES 41-58) T175HE heroes who gave their names to the Athenian tribes provided the essential framework within which the Athenian democracy customarily functioned. In their persons, they linked historical present with immemorial past, the realities of government with the legends of remote antiquity. In their cults, they perpetuatedthat ancient marriage of ancestral religion and practical politics which formed so char- acteristic a feature of the Greek polis. The Athenian citizen enjoyed the privileges and responsibilities of his citizenship almost wholly under the protecting aegis of his tribal hero. It was by tribe that he voted in the annual elections, by tribe that he would be allotted to public office. As a representative of his tribe, he would serve in the Council and by rotation of the tribal delegations the Council formed its executive committee. On behalf of his tribe, the citizen competed in the sacred games or performed in the choral dances in the theater. As a youth he was mustered by tribe for military service. It was in the ranks of his tribal regiment that the Athenian drilled and marched to war, by tribe that he fought in battle, and by tribe that he listed the names of his comrades who fell fighting and did not return. The tribal structure of the Athenian state found its monumental embodiment in the precinct of the Eponymous Heroes in the Agora. Just as the neighboring Altar of the Twelve Gods was the central milestone from which the roads ran out to all parts of Athens, so the complex channels of civic authority ran out to every citizen from the monument of the Eponymoi. -

On Naming and Authenticity in the Works of Milena Michiko Flašar TRANSIT Vol
Muston: Eine wohltuende Unsicherheit Eine wohltuende Unsicherheit: On Naming and Authenticity in the Works of Milena Michiko Flašar TRANSIT vol. 11, no. 2 Edward Muston Introduction Born in Vienna to Austrian and Japanese parents, Milena Michiko Flašar exposes in her three novels, [Ich bin] (2008), Okaasan (2010), and Ich nannte ihn Krawatte (2012), the unique difficulties faced by transnational subjects of the second- rather than first- generation. In these works, bilingualism, however imperfect, and overlapping cultures, however incomplete, are far more an inherent state than a form of liberation from monolingualism or a single hegemonic culture.1 While recent scholarship on transnationalism frequently describes the plurality of languages and identities as evidence of polysemantic possibility and the complexity of identity,2 Flašar’s novels provide situations where this linguistic wealth is frequently neither immediately self-evident, nor empowering. Indeed, her depictions of second-generation experience show individuals struggling to mimic their mono-ethnic or ethno-nationalist peers, onto whom they initially project the felicitous self-certainty of the monolingual condition (Yildiz 2-3). In this way, all of Flašar’s texts take as their point of departure the very real anguish felt by transnational individuals whose complex, multipartite identities extend beyond nationalist models of social authenticity. Rather than accepting the violent curtailment of identity which integration into hegemonic society demands, her figures stubbornly pursue a subjective authenticity across national, linguistic, and ethnic borders. At each stage of their respective journeys and upon each border crossing, they acquire a new name that they hope will either unify or at least supplement their existing identities.
