SUNDAY, MAY 8 First Thoughts

David Hull

Many of you knew him long

before you knew me. He preached in the “old church building” in Huntsville when I was just a child. He, of course, is my father, Dr. William E. Hull. I am happy to welcome him to our pulpit once again this Sunday as I am away on a mission trip to Thailand. Morning Service Sermon: “The Meaning of Motherhood” For most of my years of “growing up,” my father was a professor Guest Preacher: Dr. William E. Hull, and administrator at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Former professor and administrator at The Southern in Louisville, KY. During my days in college he became Pastor of Baptist Theological Seminary, Retired Provost at the First Baptist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he Samford University, currently serving as Minister in served for twelve years. Then in 1987 he came to Samford Residence at Mountain Brook Baptist Church, University to be the Provost. He is now retired from Samford but Birmingham, and father of our David Hull. is the Minister in Residence at Mountain Brook Baptist Church in Birmingham where he teaches and preaches on a regular basis. I am most grateful that he can be in Huntsville this Sunday. Discipleship Training - 5:00 p.m. - Parlor “The Gospel According to Mayberry” Sunday is Mother’s Day. The message will be entitled, “The Crisis Management: or in Mayberry terms, Meaning of Motherhood.” Because of the significance of the day, “A BA-AH-d Case of Indigestion” I have also invited my mother, Wylodine Hull, to lead our Morning A lesson in finding peace in the storm, Prayer. I hope that you will be able to be in worship this Sunday. I based on the episode, “The Loaded Goat.” will miss being with you, but I leave you in very good hands. Evening Worship - 6:30 p.m. - Chapel I often close worship services with a Benediction that was written Sermon: Dr. Ed. Culpepper by my . He used it in our wedding and I have used it ever “Scripture is Fulfilled in Your Hearing” - Luke 4:16-22 since. On many occasions church members have asked that a copy of the Benediction be printed in the newsletter so that you can have the words. Now is a good time for that. They are good words to say as we welcome the author of the prayer. They are good words for me to remember as I travel. MUSIC AND MISSIONS CELEBRATION SERVICE

Russell Preschool Ministries Joy Moore, Minister of Preschool Family and Friends of our member, Mr. Lew Steakley Using Bible Skills with Preschoolers Teachers at church and parents have the opportunity to introduce preschoolers to God’s special book, the Bible. This is accomplished through the use of Bible OUR verses and phrases, which are portions of Bible verses that are paraphrased or restated using words NEWEST preschoolers understand. Teachers and parents can repeat Bible verses as girls and boys engage in everyday activities. For example, as Maria arranges fresh flowers in a plastic vase, the teacher might say: “Maria, the Bible says, ‘God made the flowers.”’ Gabe and The goal for using Bible verses with preschoolers is to help make life application, not Grace Morin, twins of Aaron and memorization. However, if an older preschooler hears the same Bible verse several Laura Ritch Morin, 3960 Whirlaway, times in the context of an activity, the child may be able to remember that Bible verse. Tuscaloosa, AL 35406, born April 19, In fact, teachers often encourage preschoolers to remember Bible verses by asking 2005. Great-grandmother is Aileen them to complete a Bible phrase, such as “Jesus said, ‘You are My ____(friends).’” Halcomb.

Bible verses and phrases used with preschoolers contain concrete facts. The purpose Clay Chris Alan Dutton, son of is for preschoolers to apply biblical teaching to their own lives. “Jesus is the Lamb of David and Tanya Dutton, 109 God” may be confusing to literal-minded preschoolers, but “Jesus is God’s Son” Windsong Court, Madison, AL 35757, communicates the same truth. born May 2, 2005.

As preschoolers learn that the Bible’s teachings apply to their lives, they also need to know that the Bible verses they hear are actually in the Bible. Teachers can do this by FELLOWSHIP CLUB placing Bible markers at the correct references. As teachers talk about Jesus’ birth, Friday, May 13 they can open the Bible to Matthew 2:1 and point to the verse. 10:00 a.m. - Fellowship Hall Speaker: Using Bible verses with young children gives adults opportunities to reinforce the truth City Councilman Glen Watson that the Bible is a special book. Topic: Tsunami Disaster MENU From the publication: Levels of Bible Skills from Lifeway Church Resources. Chicken Divan, Rice, Green Salad, Dessert MOTHERS OF PRESCHOOLERS: You are invited to join other Mothers of For reservations, call Preschoolers for an evening of food, fun and fellowship at the of Betty Wright, 837-2114.
