The centers agenda is to analyze opportunities and barriers for participation of persons with disabilities, elderly persons, and their caregivers in order to improve their chances of participation and their access to the given material and immaterial goods in the society.

The Center pursues this goal by • conducting research projects in collaboration with stakeholders in the fields of science, politics, professional practice and (self-) advocacy groups, • promoting the qualification of young academics within the field of participation research – particularly orthopedagogues and social pedagogues, • organizing and participating in conferences, research colloquia and research-practice transfer, • consulting local authorities, service providers, funding organizations, advocacy groups, • collaboration with research centers at other universities and with academic/scientific associations.

Focal point: Participation of the generations

European societies have to adapt to the growing numbers of senior citizens and the shrinking numbers of young people in a variety of ways. The researchers´ main focus is on the ageing subjects within their social and societal contexts that allows or complicates a self-determined and satisfied life. As health conditions may change in old age (multimorbidity, chronical diseases, limited mobility, dementia), support systems should be tailored to the individual needs. In addition to that, the quality of life and the opportunities of the middle-aged and younger generation for participation need to be taken into account. Those generations have to ensure and coordinate the current and future care arrangements.
