UNBS Casts Doubt On ‘Natural Mineral Water’ Marketing Tagline

At first when the Standards Body (UNBS) first issued water standards there was no definition of what quantity of minerals should be in water for it to be classified as natural mineral water. However with the adoption of the EAC standard, new parameters have been set. UNBS Standards Manager Mr. David Eboku explains Though the old water standards were revised, the new one is expected to encompass new parameters like the use of fluoride and totally dissolved solids. Natural mineral water is defined as water that is obtained directly from underground sources protected from pollution risks which are characterized by content of certain mineral salts and their relative proportions. This kind of water can be found in places like hot springs. So for a producer to claim that they are bottling natural mineral water is commercially absurd, until their claim is proven. Uganda is littered with fresh water bodies, which means that the water we consume is not salty and does not contain high levels of dissolved CHRONICLES solids like chloride, unlike our neighbours at the coast whose teeth turn brown due to the Mr. David Eboku concentrated levels of mineral elements in the UNBS Standards Manager water they consume. UNBS encourages the association of a defect; it is because beverage and water producers to stop we are upgrading the standard.

Use of Fluoride The other area that was looked at was the use of fluoride. Fluoride is in the category of chloride and can occur in water naturally because water passes through the earth’s crust. But the challenge with fluoride is that at higher level it can damage teeth. This is why in some communities you find that people’s teeth are dark or brown, porous – that is to say the teeth are stained. All this is attributed to high quantities of fluoride in water. The good thing is that in water, this is not common though you may find some communities that may have a problem.

As government steps up its drive to light up all households before 2020, it is boosting business for those who sell electric poles for power transmission. As UNBS prepares the country for the new standard on poles. We ask Richard Ebong, the Principal Standards Officer - UNBS to shed light on the matter.

The adoption of the East African standard doesn’t mean that UNBS hasn’t been having standards on electric poles especially wooden poles. “First of all, UNBS has been having the standards for poles and there are people who are locally producing poles in Uganda that have been certified by UNBS. Uganda being an agricultural country; it means its population gets its living off farm outputs. However, ill use of farm inputs like pesticides is a danger to public health; which is why the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) developed standards to make sure farmers use the agro-chemicals rightfully. However, as country Uganda is lacking enough information in regard to pesticide residues. So when it comes to pesticides we are doing in most cases we refer to international standards – in this case CODEX. And when it comes to enforcement it is the Ministry of Agriculture which is enforcing specifically agro-chemicals. As a standards development body, UNBS develops the standards that are used by the Agricultural Ministry. During the development process, UNBS invites various stakeholders like UNADA (Uganda national agro-chemicals dealers association) when it comes to agro- chemicals then MAIIF – according to Were. However, this process becomes a challenge due to a lack of vital information. “Uganda lacks data when it comes to residue limit and this is why most of Uganda’s chili exports are suffering when taken abroad. We get notifications that they are finding micro toxins due to our misuse of agro-chemicals. When it comes to researching about the residue limits in produce, the Agricultural Ministry is progressing. But for UNBS, we are not yet doing this kind of research. The fEATuRE

Besides this, the QUISP program helped the bureau in training on meat handling in abattoirs – along the value chain from transportation from the farm. So to help enforce these standards UNBS works with KCCA. Mrs. Were advises consumers to avoid substandard agro produce in the market by changing their attitude! “It all starts with the attitude of consumers; Ugandans can reject substandard goods in the market by avoiding cheaper alternatives that are substandard. And when buying products be aware of produce that has chemicals visible on them like tomatoes, mangoes and others. This is poisonous; unfortunately today sellers wipe their produce so that buyers do not notice the chemicals. Always wash the produce when you get home, and the farmer should follow the manufacturer’s instructions when spraying crops. This is because at times even if you wash it at home but when the chemical is inside it doesn’t help much,” – Were. The whole value chain from the farm to the final consumer should be sensitized to adopt good practice to prevent produce from being poisonous and having high pesticide residue. Before the product is exported, it should first have a supposed to be certified by UNBS to ensure that every certificate to show that this product complies with the product that is produced is of quality. national standards.
