Thomas3 1National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, 575025, India, [email protected] 2National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, 575025, India 3Centre for Earth Science Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, 695031, India Received: Feb. 28, 2013; Accepted: March 16, 2014 Abstract Nearshore wave transformation is a complex coastal process of shoaling, refraction, diffraction, reflection, and energy dissipation due to bed friction and breaking contributing variations in the wave height, period and direction. A well defined sediment cell of about 45 km extending from Kovalam headland to Varkala cliff which forms a part of Thiruvananthapuram coast along the southwest coast of India, is selected for the wave transformation studies. In the present study MIKE 21 Spectral Wave model (DHI, 2011) was used. The model simulates the growth, decay and transformation of wind generated waves and swells both in offshore and coastal areas. Providing MIKE 21 SW with a suitable bathymetry is essential for obtaining reliable results from the model. Usually the offshore bathymetry is derived from C-MAP, ETOPO, GEBCO etc. and the nearshore bathymetry is generated from close grid bathymetric surveys. In this study offshore bathymetry was generated from GEBCO-08 grid which is a freely available software with 30 arc (~ 1 km) resolution. In the nearshore zone, surveyed close grid bathymetric data were used. The other inputs such as wave measurements and wind data provided in the model were from observations in Lakshadweep Sea. Model result is calibrated with field observations along this sector.

The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

ABSTRACT First report on the status of fisheries and seasonal variation in fish diversity in four selected estuaries (Pozhiyoo r,Adimalathura,Poonthura and Kappil) of Trivandrum district, Kerala are included. During the present study, 134 species of fin fishes (belonging to 51 fin fish families), 6 species of Penaeid shrimps, 3 species of Palaemonid prawns, 7 species of crabs , 5 spe- cies of bivalves (4 mollusca families) were noticed. Fin fishes were the major group. Some of the fish species in the estuaries were observed as ‘threatened’ (Horabagrus brachysoma, Channa striatus, Channa marulius, Heteropneustes fossilis, Wallago attu and Parambassis thomasi). The study implies that temporal changes in fish landing pattern of the estuaries were mainly due to environmental variability, habitat modi- fication and fish migration; under the influence of south-west monsoon and anthropogenic activities. Assessment is urgently needed on the spatial scales and dynamics of species richness from point samples to assemblages, impact on habitat and landscapes, especially in coastal areas of the tropics where threats to diversity are the greatest.
