LAND INSTITUTE FOUNDER TO DISCUSS ‘AGE OF DISCOVERY’ IN UM LECTURE

MISSOULA -

Wes Jackson, founder and president of The Land Institute, will visit The University of

Montana Tuesday, March 10, to deliver a free public lecture on the age of discovery.

Jackson will discuss "Five Hundred Years After Columbus: the End of the Age of

Colonization and the Beginning of the Age of Discovery" at 8 p.m. in the Montana Theatre. The lecture is part of UM’s President’s Lecture Series.

Jackson, one of 18 individuals Life magazine predicted will rank among the 100 "important

Americans of the 20th Century," founded The Land Institute in 1976. Based in Salina, Kan., the institute is a non-profit education and research organization devoted to developing sustainable alternatives for stewardship of the Earth and agriculture.

He has written two books, 1980’s "New Roots for Agriculture" and "Altars of Unhewn

Stone," published in 1987. He edited the 1971 environmental studies anthology "Man and the

Environment," which has been adopted by more than 500 colleges and universities, and co-edited

"Meeting the Expectations of the Land," a 1985 compilation of papers on sustainable agriculture and stewardship. He has written many book chapters and feature articles, and has been featured in five national public television documentaries.

Before launching the institute, Jackson was the founding director of the Center for

Environmental Studies at California State University in Sacramento. Earlier, he taught biology at

Kansas Wesleyan University and at the high school level.

He holds a doctorate in genetics from North Carolina State University, a master’s in botany from the University of Kansas and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Kansas Wesleyan
