University of Sheffield Library. Special Collections and Archives Ref: MS 6 - 9, MS 22 Title: Mundella Papers Scope: The correspondence and other papers of Anthony John Mundella, Liberal M.P. for Sheffield, including other related correspondence, 1861 to 1932. Dates: 1861-1932 (also Leader Family correspondence 1848-1890) Level: Fonds Extent: 23 boxes Name of creator: Anthony John Mundella Administrative / biographical history: The content of the papers is mainly political, and consists largely of the correspondence of Mundella, a prominent Liberal M.P. of the later 19th century who attained Cabinet rank. Also included in the collection are letters, not involving Mundella, of the family of Robert Leader, acquired by Mundella’s daughter Maria Theresa who intended to write a biography of her father, and transcriptions by Maria Theresa of correspondence between Mundella and Robert Leader, John Daniel Leader and another Sheffield Liberal M.P., Henry Joseph Wilson. The collection does not include any of the business archives of Hine and Mundella. Anthony John Mundella (1825-1897) was born in Leicester of an Italian father and an English mother. After education at a National School he entered the hosiery trade, ultimately becoming a partner in the firm of Hine and Mundella of Nottingham. He became active in the political life of Nottingham, and after giving a series of public lectures in Sheffield was invited to contest the seat in the General Election of 1868. Mundella was Liberal M.P. for Sheffield from 1868 to 1885, and for the Brightside division of the Borough from November 1885 to his death in 1897.

  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

Public Record Office of Northern Ireland 2 Crown Copyright 2007 O’Hagan Papers Background O'Hagan was born into a Roman Catholic family engaged in the spirit trade in Belfast. His father had sufficient means and aspirations for his son, to send the young O'Hagan to the foremost educational establishment in contemporary Belfast – the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. This school had at this time a liberal Presbyterian tradition and ethos. After a distinguished career at the Institution O'Hagan edited for a period the ‘Ulster Magazine’ until, on its failure, he entered the legal profession in 1831 by becoming a student of the King's Inns, Dublin, and its London counterpart. He was called to the bar in 1836 and practised on the north-east Irish circuit and in Dublin. He was married twice; firstly, in 1836, to Mary Teeling, of Belfast, who died in 1868, and by whom he had six children; secondly, in 1871, to Alice Mary Towneley of Towneley, Lancashire, who survived him, and by whom he had a further six children.

  • Hardinge Giffard, 1St Earl of Halsbury, Lord High Chancellor
st Hardinge Giffard, 1 Earl of Halsbury, Lord High Chancellor Background History Born in London, you are the third son of Stanley Lees Giffard, editor of the Standard newspaper, by his wife Susanna, daughter of Francis Moran. You were educated at Merton College, Oxford, and called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1850.’ You quickly became important within the circuit and went on to have a large practice at the central criminal court and the Middlesex sessions. You even served for several years as the junior prosecuting counsel to the Treasury. You then became Queen's Counsel in 1865 and a bencher of the Inner Temple. As you continued on with your efforts in the legal world you made yourself quite the name in the United Kingdom. You won a great many high profile cases surrounding fraud in the budget and also represented high profile clients in a number of suits against factories for child labor and suits for workers rights. This has made you a hero of the people in many places in the Midlands and in South Wales, where many of the workers benefited from your victories. While you were acting as a barrister, you also began to garner an interest in politics. Using the political capital you had amassed from your legal work both politically and popularly, you tried to enter into the House of Commons. However, ultimately you remained without a seat in the House of Commons, even when appointed to be the Solicitor General by Disraeli in 1875. While in this position you acted as an invaluable font of legal information for the crown, helping provide them legal guidance in the face of rapidly changing laws around workers rights, social norms, and also industrial practices.

He kept a diary for most of his adult life and filled various journals with his religious thoughts. Faced with a difficult decision he would set down both sides of the argument on paper. He wrote memoranda on different subjects, the most famous being his unfinished sketch of Pitt - but the sheer volume of his correspondence alone would have buried most men. He often wrote and received as many as twenty letters a day, and few of them were short. In addition to his own papers, two of his sons kept notes of his conversations in their commonplace books. Here, in Wilberforce: Slavery, Religion and Politics, Series One, Parts 1-3, we are able to make available a complete microfilm edition of the Wilberforce Papers from the Bodleian Library, Oxford. This project unites the separate collections of William Wilberforce’s sons, Robert and Samuel, enabling us to piece back together the Papers of William, Robert and Samuel.
