International Journal of Research in Arts and Social Sciences Vol 1 Ethnographic Application in Igbo Communication: A Study of Selected Communities Thecla Obiora Abstract The major difference between linguistic competence and communicative competence is clearly shown in ethnography of speaking. A native speaker of a language who has communicative competence observes the social, cultural and other non-linguistic elements that govern effective communication. This principle is highly maintained in most parts of Igbo speaking areas. This research work is therefore geared towards unveiling the application of some of the cultural, social and contextual norms to some Igbo linguistic communities, with Inland West Igbo, Owere Inland East Igbo and Waawa Igbo. The researcher discovered that ethnography of communication is well observed by competent native speakers of Igbo language. This is so because sex, and age of the addresser and addressee, societal value, religious belief, etc. go a long way in determining the choice of words. The research was concluded with an emphasis that speakers of the language should adhere strictly to the ethnology of speaking so as to achieve communicative competence. This exercise would be very useful to Igbo language speakers and learners. Introduction Ethnography of communication studies language in connection with some non-linguistic factors such as the environmental factors, and socio-cultural factors. It does not study language in isolation. Ethnology of speech considers some other elements in addition to words that contribute to effective communication. Origin of Igbo Surnames, Past and Present
International Journal of Theology & Reformed Tradition Vol 3 Origin of Igbo Surnames, Past and Present Felicia N. Ibemesi Abstract The formal use of Igbo surnames, which started with the coming of Western Education and the development of white-collar jobs, show by their contents and contexts past and present values. They have been identified in five different classes namely: Patronymic, matronymic, occupational, toponymic and pseudonymic/nicknames. Interest in Igbo names and their meanings continue to be on the increase as scores of entries on the websites show. 1. Introduction This paper is not an attempt to produce a collection or a dictionary of Igbo personal and surnames. A large amount of literature already exists in that direction (Njoku, J.E.: 1978). An earlier work on a group of Igbo names we classified as “Assumed Names” made references to the long works on Igbo personal and surnames (Ibemesi, F.N.:1988). Interest in Igbo names continues to increase as people realize that there is much in name and in naming, particularly with respect to Igbo. Some entries in the websites even show that foreigners married to Igbo in the diaspora are seeking for Igbo names and their meanings for use for their children (Ladejobi-Ukwu,Dele: 2009; Zahymaka:2006). Naming is as old as humanity. The origin and development of family names do however vary among different nations of the world. 2011 Page 149 International Journal of Theology & Reformed Tradition Vol 3 Some of the many descriptions of Igbo names show among other things, that they are not just mere identification tags on the bearers, but that they are also records of family and community history (Ubahakwe, Ebo: 1981). -

Department of English Language and Literature, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Anambra State, Nigeria E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The predominance and relegation of the English and Igbo Languages in discourse respectively have been speculated with a paucity of empirical backup. The need arises therefore for a quantitative assessment of the Impact of the English Language on the development of values (language, dressing and religion) among the Igbos. One hundred structured questionnaires were distributed, collated and analysed. The result showed that English and Igbo languages were spoken at the rate of (6%) and (76%) respectively, and that the English Language had a zero (0) impact on the mode of dressing, while its effect on religion was at the rate of only (6%) among the sampled participants. It is therefore recommended that first language (L1) be emphasized as the language of communication over second language (L2) for an overall communicative competence. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Development is often associated with challenges. The inability to study the numerous available dialects of Igbo language is one of the identified challenges facing the development of Igbo language particularly in the area of Igbo language teaching and learning, structural development of Igbo language, computation, and reconciliation of Igbo language with Information and Communication Technologies. Therefore, there is need to study the varying dialects of Igbo language before we can set a standard structure for the language which will facilitate a better teaching and learning of Igbo language, and harness the reconciliation of Igbo language with information and communication technologies. The present study investigated the structural differences between the sound system of Ikwo Igbo and Standard Igbo dialects. Descriptive research design was adopted for this work. However, it was largely discussed focusing on an aspect of generative phonology called feature theory. From this research, we discovered that the sound system of the two dialects are the same, except that while standard Igbo has thirty-six (36) phonemes; comprising eight (8) vowels and twenty-eight (28) consonants, the Ikwo dialect has forty-five (45) phonemes; comprising nine (9) vowels and thirty-six (36) consonants. It was observed that the sounds /s/ and /z/ cannot occur before /i/ or /ị/ in Ikwo dialect, rather /s/ and /z/ changes their forms to [ʃ] and [ʒ] respectively when the high front vowels [i] or [ɪ] is occurring after them. -

Published by American Research Institute for Policy Development DOI: 10.15640/ijll.v6n1a5 URL: https://doi.org/10.15640/ijll.v6n1a5 Language, Identity and the Cultural Context of Names in Selected Nigerian Novels Chibuike Smart Mbarachi1 & Esther Igwenyi2 Abstract Names are a reflection of a people's language and culture hence novelists often adopt names to capture their sociocultural background, the society in which their texts are set, or the background of their fictional characters. Using the framework of Anthroponomastics which leans on linguistic anthropology, this study examines names in four selected Nigerian novels, namely Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart and Anthills of the Savannah, and Chimamanda Adichie's Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun. The analysis of the names extracted from the novels shows that in names, language and culture intertwine to bequeath an identity to the named person. This identity may mirror the expected character, roles or the circumstances surrounding the conception and birth of the named one, or may generally reflect the worldview of his/her society. The meaning of names is contextual and derives from a society’s cultural and sociolinguistic reservoir which is accessible to members whenever they need names that capture their intended meaning. The names in the novels also indicate the individual and the group identity of the bearers and their society, but expressed through language and they often have multi-faceted meanings. -

Obiamalu2 1(Department of Linguistics, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria) 2(Department of Linguistics, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria) Abstract The educational collaboration between China and Nigeria is one of the most important issues facing China and Nigeria whereby Nigeria receives a great support from the Chinese government to enhance Chinese teaching and learning. Apart from the Chinese Primary and Secondary school located in Abuja, Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka is the first tertiary institution to offer programs in Chinese language and culture. In 2006, the Confucius Institute was officially opened to run Chinese studies. This Institute intends to achieve two major purposes: first, to impart the Chinese language and culture into Nigerians; and secondly, to build an intricate relationship between Nigerians and the Chinese through academic exchange programs. Many students have shown in interest in the learning of Chinese language at Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Most of these enthusiastic learners are Igbo L1 speakers. The aim of this paper is to undertake a contrastive analysis of the phonologies of Standard Chinese and Standard Igbo with the former as the target language. The results presented here come from a year case study of the Chinese program of the Confucius Institute located at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria. In doing this, the study investigates the sound systems, syllable structures and tonal systems of Igbo and Chinese. -

As a matter of fact, each of these four novels focuses on a different colonial or postcolonial phase of history in Nigeria and through them Achebe intends to provide an authentic record of the negative and positive impacts of ‘hybridity’ on different aspects of the life of native subjects. Briefly stated, Achebe is largely successful in taking advantages of variable discursive tools he structures based on the potentials of the hybrid, Igbo-English he adopts. Thus, it might be deduced that reading these four novels in line with each other, and as chains or sequels of Tetralogy, might result in providing a more vivid picture of the Nigerian (African) subjects and the identity crises emerging in them as a result of colonization. To provide an account of the matter, the present study seeks to focus on one of the discursive strategies Achebe relies on in those four novels: Igbo Naming Cosmology and Name-symbolization.
