Or perhaps it was a winner: it could be precisely because, unlike nearby Petersfield or Haslemere, Midhurst has not been a major commuter proposition that it has retained so much of what it was.
Here is a high street that Mary Portas would die for, lined as it is by busy independent shops and cafés, and dotted historic churches and half- timbered buildings. It seems an apt choice for the national park’s new headquarters. And at the heart of this town at the heart of the national park is a hotel whose manager applauds the arrival of the park.
The Angel Hotel, on Midhurst’s main street, dates back to the 18th century and has, in its time, housed a travelling magistrates’ court and hosted guests including H G Wells, Hilaire Beloc, and the Pilgrim Fathers.
In the spirit of Midhurst’s commercial offer, the Angel is privately owned and, like many small hotels, it found itself increasingly at the wrong end of changing patterns of trade. And then, in 2009, it enjoyed a £750,000 makeover, its 28 bedrooms, reduced to 15 stylish en suite rooms, and, in 2010, Richard Macadam, came in as manager from Chichester’s Westoe House restaurant with rooms, to shake up the food and drink offer to match.
The designation of the South Downs National Park has, says Richard, had a visible impact on the Angel’s clientèle. “It’s certainly bringing in a new client base that’s never been to this area. People are thinking of the South Downs as a destination for a holiday as opposed to a weekend and we are aware that we have relatively easy access to the more western parts of the South Pond, Midhurst (top); Lombard Street, Petworth park if you want to make this a base.

Richard honed his skills back in the UK, including a stint at Midhurst’s Spread Eagle Hotel, and brought in chef Richard Cook from an independent restaurant in Denham and set about building a wine list for the Angel’s Bentleys restaurant to complement a food offer in which Argentinian steaks are a speciality. There’s a good reason for that: Cowdray Park, the home of British polo, is less than a mile away, and it in turn is home to Argentinian polo players who know good Argentinian beef when they taste it. “Sixty per cent of our menu is locally sourced, including from the farm shop at Cowdray,” he says.

Britain’s national parks have been celebrating their 60th birthdays – this year it’s the turn of England’s North York Moors and the Pembrokeshire Coast, in Wales. The legislation that enabled our national parks was passed in 1949 and the first national parks, the Lake District and the Peak, were created two years later amid the post-war optimism that also created the NHS.
Our national parks are not nationalised, or wild and untamed in the way, say, American national parks are – they are living landscapes with living communities. And they are – in the words of the Association of National Park Authorities – “Britain’s breathing spaces”. Our 15 national parks are the very best of our protected areas, which also include 40 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in England and Wales, and 40 National Scenic Areas, in Scotland. The European Day of Parks, on May 24, celebrates all the continent’s protected landscapes and marks the anniversary of the first nine national parks in Europe, created in 1909 in Sweden.
