    On Conservation and Development: The Role of Traditional Mud Brick Firms in Southern Yemen* Deepa Mehta Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation** Columbia University in the City of New York New York, NY 10027, USA [email protected] ABSTRACT A study of small and medium enterprises that make up the highly specialized mud brick construction industry in southern Yemen reveals how the practice has been sustained through closely-linked regional production chains and strong firm inter-relationships. Yemen, as it struggles to grow as a nation, has the potential to gain from examining the contribution that these institutions make to an ancient building practice that still continues to provide jobs and train new skilled workers. The impact of these firms can be bolstered through formal recognition and capacity development. UNESCO, ICOMOS, and other conservation agencies active in the region provide a model that emphasizes architectural conservation as well as the concurrent development of the existing socioeconomic linkages. The primary challenge is that mud brick construction is considered obsolete, but evidence shows that the underlying institutions are resilient and sustainable, and can potentially provide positive regional policy implications. The author is from this group of Arabs who are strict in keeping their genealogy and family trees. Living in Southeast Asia, members of the ‘Alawi family are part of the well-researched Hadhrami diaspora, where genealogical texts and activities evolved side by side. One major factor that brings about this strictness in keeping their genealogy is because the group can trace their ancestry to the prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad and from there the genealogical lineage was established to the first human being, Prophet Adam. However in the course of the Hadhrami diaspora there are multiple other factors which contributed to this keeping of the genealogy that had become structured and institutionalised. The first part of the paper will attempt to trace the effects of the diaspora in this respect, while the second part of the paper will cover the author’s personal journey in tracing her roots amidst this long history of migration.     CHAPTER THREE ARAB HADHRAMIS IN MALAYSIA: THEIR ORIGINS AND ASSIMILATION IN MALAY SOCIETY Abdul Rahman Tang Abdullah Introduction The term ‘assimilation’ is loosely used in this chapter to describe the process of the integration or indigenisation of the Hadhramis into Malay society in Malaysia from the time of their advent into the region up to the present day.1 In this context, I may argue that this process of assimilation has a historical, social and political signifi cance due to the fact that it gave the Hadhrami migrants special respect in the indigenous society, where they dominated the political discourse and held a variety of key posts ranging from chiefs of villages to paramount rulers at the apex of the Malay political structure (kerajaan).2 The chapter exam- ines fi rst the signifi cance of their ideology of descent, and, second, the process of their adaptation and assimilation in the Malay environment. Special attention will also be paid to their role in Malay society with a particular emphasis on those who trace their origins to al-usayn ibn Alī ibn Abī ālib and are given the title of sayyid (pl. sāda). Since 1990 reports on the occurrence and dis- tribution of the Arabian leopard in Yemen are generalized, and all post 1990 records can be grouped in five broad clusters. 1. The northern part of the western highlands (Wada’a, Saada to the Saudi border and Kufl Shammar in Hajja. 2. The central part of the western highlands (Al Hayma, Jebel Bura’a and Jebel Raymah. 3. South western region (Radfan to Al Koor and possibly extending west to Taizz). 4. Central Yemen (Wadi Hajar, possibly with Wadi Hadhramaut). 5. Al Mahra region in the East. Due to lack of sufficient information on various aspects of the leopard’s life in Yemen, extensive field work is urgently needed to assess the status of this animal. Since the animal is facing great threat, strict protection measures are urgently needed. Major threats to leopards include 1. depletion of their prey, 2. direct persecu- tion through killing, 3. habitat degradation. Immediate action to control these threats are needed, priorities are:1. Establish the current status of the leopard and its prey.

Terken and Nashwa Al-Ruwehy Petroleum Development Oman ABSTRACT In North Oman, 20 fields, with a combined oil-in-place of 500 million cubic meters (3,145 million barrels), have reserves booked in the Permian-Carboniferous Haushi (Gharif and Al-Khlata formations) reservoirs. In addition, some 150 prospects are recognized with a combined ultimate recoverable reserves expectation of 39 million cubic meters (245 million barrels). Following a successful exploration campaign, the success ratio decreased progressively. An integrated charge and retention study was therefore carried out to revitalize the play. The aim of this study was to establish a framework for predicting fluid content (gas, oil, and water). Components of this framework were a charge study to explain the hydrocarbon distribution on a basin scale and a retention study addressing top and fault seal quality. The oil in the Haushi has been generated by three different source rocks: ‘Q’, Huqf Group (Shuram Formation) and Haima Group (Safiq Formation). However, oil-typing shows that over 90% of the oil-in-place is derived from the ‘Q’ source rock. This seems to indicate a charge problem for prospects outside the ‘Q’ migration fairways. The ‘Q’ kitchen was defined with the help of chemical odometers (nitrogen compounds whose relative concentrations provide a measure of migration distance). Measurements on 18 ‘Q’ oils suggest a source area on the western margin of the Ghaba Salt Basin, immediately to the east of Ramlat Rawl and Saih Rawl.

This study aims to investigate the influence of Indonesian culture on communities in Yemen particularly the Hadhrami community in the South of Yemen. Due to the diaspora of Hadhrami that began in the old era of hadhramout to many countries in the world including Indonesia, there are social and cultural influences observed among communities in hadhramout. Based on primary data through semi-structured interviews with individuals, and secondary data from the literature, this study aims at shedding the light on the influences of the Indonesian culture observed among the Hadhrami communities. The outcome of this research highlights the social and cultural effects on the local communities by the Indonesian culture.
