Beyerchen Graduate Program in Comparative Studies ABSTRACT This thesis attempts to locate the role of Berlin in American discourse during the height of the Cold War using a theoretical model based on the discourse theory of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. It analyzes the historical background of the American investment in Berlin from wartime negotiations through Kennedy’s Berlin visit in 1963, and it draws on official and media representations in order to develop a sense of how Berlin, its people and its events were represented to the American people at the time. Discourse theory is then explained and its key terms illustrated with reference to the role of Berlin within American Cold War discourse. CALENDAR - 20 From the President hen I decided to undertake the survey of the Guild about a year ago there were Wtwo main areas that I wished to look at; training and recruitment. The first, training, has, I hope with the passing of time, taken care of itself. With the appointment of Robert as Guild Education Officer and the formation of an Education Committee which has met and put together a schedule of courses for the first half of 2009 using known requirements reported by Committee members and requirements highlighted by the survey results, this should fulfil the training needs of the membership. These courses will of course run alongside whatever training is already provided at local tower level and by the Branches, and as 2009 progresses the Education Committee will be able to see what is supported and what is not, and adjust its programme for later in the year to meet the needs of the members.

Writing on bells forms one of the oldest records of man's use of this marvel, being traceable back over three thousand years on existing artifacts. It has been placed Lhere for four principal reasons ; to memorialize their origin, to state their purpose, to ornament them, and to add to their magico-sacred power. This last purpose had been considered the most prac­ tical one in some cultures, including periods in our Western Christian civiliza­ tion. Vestiges of it are fo und even in inscriptions on modern bells which are beard by thousands of people daily and are not connected with any church, but we have little knowledge of what is actually written on bells because we almost never see them closely. The origin of the magico-sacred inscription is the concept that an all­ seeing deity observes a bell whether it is on display to mortals or hidden in a tower, just as he hears it- if he can hear prayers (otherwise why are prayers spoken? )- whether it is as small as a thimble and has a very faint tone or is as large as a room and booms out over a whole city. This fact is what has made the bell play such an important role in the life of man; it is an object which uses both acoustical and visible elements in order to get the attention of beings both visible and invisible.

Hibbert M.A. M.Sc. for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2008 Updated April 2008 Department of Design, Development, Environment and Materials Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology The Open University Milton Keynes United Kingdom Abstract The primary objective of the work reported in this thesis was to quantify how the pitch or strike note of a bell is determined by the frequencies of its partials. Pitches of bells are generally virtual pitch or missing fundamental effects, generated in the ear rather than present as a frequency in the radiated sound. The exact pitch is shifted from that expected for the missing fundamental by changes in the frequency of various partials. This can cause bells whose partials are in theory tuned precisely, to sound out of tune by considerable fractions of a semitone. The pitch shifts were quantified at frequencies across the audible spectrum by a set of experiments carried out on 30 subjects. Subsidiary experiments established which partials create a bell’s pitch or pitches at different frequencies, and showed that partial amplitude does not significantly affect bell pitch. A simple model of pitch shift was devised from the test results which gave good agreement with the stretch tuning in a number of peals of bells. Stretch tuning has not previously been satisfactorily explained. The pitch shifts were also compared against Terhardt’s algorithm for virtual pitch, which did not predict the shifts seen in practice. To prepare for these experiments, a comprehensive investigation was done of the partial frequencies of over 2,000 bells with a wide range of dates, weights and founders.
