FEBRUARY MEETING John Sladek is an entertaining writer who read us a hilarious short story full of black humour. He answered questions about his career and revealed that he prefers his books to be published first in paperback so that they reach the readership instead of collecting dust on library shelves, as he feels his duty is to entertain. Chronology of the Silmarillion 1 ____ Chronology of the Silmarillion By clotho123 ___ This was put together as a potentially useful guide rather than a rigid framework and I would not regard anything here as set in stone. Tolkien did quite a bit of work on the legends after drawing up his final chronologies and might very well have changed many of the dates if he’d ever reached the point of publishing The Silmarillion. It was compiled from three of Tolkien’s chronological writings: The Annals of Aman, published in The History of Middle-earth: Morgoth’s Ring, Part Two The Grey Annals, published in The History of Middle-earth: The War of the Jewels, Part One with final section and revisions in Part Three, section I The Tale of Years, published in The History of Middle-earth: The War of the Jewels, Part Three, section V The Beginning of Time These dates are from the Annals of Aman. How precisely you think they should be interpreted is up to the individual. They are all in Valian years, which according to Tolkien’s opening description, were each roughly equivalent to ten Sun years (strictly 9.582 Sun years, if you want to be exact). Tolkien inevitably leads to a question of belief, that is, the question of whether readers actually believe in the fictional world and how that experience of belief generates meaning. Much of the scholarship on fantasy literature is very interested in this question, beginning with Tolkien’s own discussions of “Secondary belief” in his essay “On Faiy- Stories.” The existing criticism has succeeded in establishing a lexicon of terms that describes how a work of fantasy conveys meaning. -

|Warhammer Fantasy: Empire of Man| |The Halflings of The Moot| Straddling the River Aver between the borders of Averland and Stirland, there exists a stretch of rolling hills and near-endless fields of green grass and farmland. Mootland, or otherwise called ‘The Moot,’ is the home of the Halflings: Short, pot-bellied, chubby-faced humanoids that almost resemble the children of Man, and indeed seem to have existed alongside Mankind since the tribes first crossed the World’s Edge Mountains. None know where the Halflings originated from, and indeed even the Halflings themselves don’t seem to care one wit for their past. Likely, Ranald created them as some bizarre joke. But that’s neither here nor there. For all that the halflings appreciate the comforts of home - chief among them being food, alcohol, pipeweed, and the chance to skip out on a hard day’s work - life isn’t always so easy for the little folk. The Moot sits in an admittedly precarious position, for its easterly border is along the edge of Sylvania. That cursed land, ruled by the walking dead and the ever-duplicitous Mannfred von Carstein, is enough to make even a jolly old halfling grow serious and attentive. To Mootland’s south runs a spur of the World’s Edge Mountains, with its myriad tunnels and caverns hosting terrible beasties and monsters: Night goblin warbands, orc tribes, skaven scouting parties, and even trolls wishing to fill their bellies. And unfortunately, even amongst the states of the Empire, halflings experience their own share of prejudice and hatred from the Tall Folk. -

Nordic Roots in Tolkien's Writings Mr. Rayan Akbari & Dr. Sayyed Rahim Moosavinia Associate Professor of English Literature Faculty of Letters and Humanities Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz Ahwaz, Khuzestan, Iran Introduction The social cataloguing website, Goodreads, in accord with Amazon, ranks The Lord of the Rings as the third best-selling book of all time, and The Hobbit as the fourth. This statistic is also confirmed by Facebook's 2014 data analysis of over 130,000 accounts for finding the top 100 most popular books. Sophie Hinger believes that this success stems from Tolkien's different attitude towards his writing. She suggests that Tolkien has pictured "Middle-earth as a mythological version of Europe, rather than creating a new and separate world as many fantasy authors after him did" (3). Her view is perhaps shared by many of the scholars who are searching for the outside influences of Tolkien's works. So far, as different sources as Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, Old Norse, Finnish, Arthurian, and biblical have been suggested by scholars like Thomas, Atherton, Hinger, Birkett, Tarkka, and Carpenter. Yet, the Nordic side of the argument seems to be better recognized. Many articles and books have established their aim to find these Nordic references; still, none seems to consider Scandinavia as a concrete place. Therefore, articles on different aspects of the culture like the mythology, literature, and specific people, like Vikings, and Finnish are popular in Tolkien studies. The present paper, however, does not discriminate between the different aspects of the concept; therefore, words like Norse, Nordic, Icelandic, Northern, and Scandinavian have all been used by the researchers to refer to the same thing, meaning the culture and literature of the Northern Germanic people. -

IRISH CRICKET AND THE GREAT WAR, 1914-18 BIOGRAPHIES OF THE FALLEN BY PAT BRACKEN IN ASSOCIATION WITH 7 NOVEMBER 2018 Irish Cricket and the Great War 1914-1918 Biographies of The Fallen The Great War had a great impact on the cricket community of Ireland. From the early days of the war until almost a year to the day after Armistice Day, there were fatalities, all of whom had some cricket heritage, either in their youth or just prior to the outbreak of the war. Based on a review of the contemporary press, Great War histories, war memorials, cricket books, journals and websites there were 289 men who died during or shortly after the war or as a result of injuries received, and one, Frank Browning who died during the 1916 Easter Rising, though he was heavily involved in organising the Sporting Pals in Dublin. These men came from all walks of life, from communities all over Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka. For all but four of the fifty-two months which the war lasted, from August 1914 to November 1918, one or more men died who had a cricket connection in Ireland or abroad. The worst day in terms of losses from a cricketing perspective was the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916, when eighteen men lost their lives. It is no coincidence to find that the next day which suffered the most losses, 9 September 1916, at the start of the Battle of Ginchy when six men died. -

Chesterton If you meet a member of that select club, "The Twelve True Fishermen," entering the Vernon Hotel for the annual club dinner, you will observe, as he takes off his overcoat, that his evening coat is green and not black. If (supposing that you have the star-defying audacity to address such a being) you ask him why, he will probably answer that he does it to avoid being mistaken for a waiter. You will then retire crushed. But you will leave behind you a mystery as yet unsolved and a tale worth telling. If (to pursue the same vein of improbable conjecture) you were to meet a mild, hard-working little priest, named Father Brown, and were to ask him what he thought was the most singular luck of his life, he would probably reply that upon the whole his best stroke was at the Vernon Hotel, where he had averted a crime and, perhaps, saved a soul, merely by listening to a few footsteps in a passage. He is perhaps a little proud of this wild and wonderful guess of his, and it is possible that he might refer to it. But since it is immeasurably unlikely that you will ever rise high enough in the social world to find "The Twelve True Fishermen," or that you will ever sink low enough among slums and criminals to find Father Brown, I fear you will never hear the story at all unless you hear it from me. The Vernon Hotel at which The Twelve True Fishermen held their annual dinners was an institution such as can only exist in an oligarchical society which has almost gone mad on good manners.
