  • Thesis Amended to Examiners Comments
Organizational Culture and Identity: A Case Study from the Australian Football League Gervase A. Haimes A thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy VICTORIA UNIVERISTY School of Human Movement, Recreation and Performance Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development August 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis comprises research that was undertaken between January 2000 and December 2004 into the organizational culture and identity of Fremantle Football Club, a professional sporting organization that competes in an elite national football competition, the Australian Football League. The thesis began with a review of the contemporary literature on the principal topic, organizational culture and identity. The literature was subsequently used to frame and explain the approach taken in the research, which was to explore culture and identity as distinguishable, inter-dependent concepts integral to the functioning of sports organizations. The justification for the need to explore their impact in professional sporting organizations, because of a gap in our knowledge, was also provided. The research was conducted as a single qualitative case study that enabled an in-depth investigation into how Fremantle Football Club’s culture and identity were formed and how they influenced its structure, strategy, behaviour and performance. Significantly, the research covered the entire history of the club since its inception in 1994, revealing three distinct periods in which culture and identity were strongly influenced by the values and beliefs of the club’s leaders, particularly the CEOs, as well as board members, senior management and coaches. The first period comprised a time of self-absorption with an inappropriate culture that saw it in frequent conflict with external stakeholders as on-field success eluded it.

To fully evaluate the options provided in the Stage 1 report the State CHAIRMAN’S Government approved the undertaking of Stage 2 by the MST. Included in the terms of reference was the requirement to consider the Subiaco Oval Redevelopment Plan and also to consider the management of the REPORT venues with due recognition of current agreements, usage levels, past contributions and future opportunities. Throughout the Stage 2 process the WAFC has committed to cooperate with the MST. The Commission, which represents the 80,000 players, 46,000 volunteers, 70,000 WA AFL club members and numerous followers of football in Western Australia, has a responsibility to ensure that football will be no worse off under any new stadium arrangements. Similarly, the Taskforce and the Government have committed to ensure that football is no worse off. WA football has fought for the past 100 years to achieve the positive position it now enjoys, with two successful AFL clubs and a successfully managed stadium. After some difficult times football now has a positive outlook for the future and accordingly it is important that football can continue to maintain this positive outlook under any new stadium arrangements. The strength of football in Western Australia was given a great fillip As a not-for-profit sports association the WAFC has a responsibility with the West Coast Eagles beating Sydney to win the AFL grand to ensure that grassroots football is supported. Funds raised from final and Fremantle Football Club falling one win short of making it West Coast, Fremantle and Subiaco Oval are directly applied to the an all-West Australian grand final.

  • GEORGE DOIG - CONDOLENCE Statement by Premier MR A.J
Extract from Hansard [ASSEMBLY - Wednesday, 29 November 2006] p8926b-8927a Mr Alan Carpenter GEORGE DOIG - CONDOLENCE Statement by Premier MR A.J. CARPENTER (Willagee - Premier) [12.14 pm]: Western Australia lost one of its all-time sporting greats on Sunday with the passing of George Ronald Doig. Born in Fremantle in 1913, George Doig was from a family whose links to the top levels of football in this state may never be surpassed. In fact, when we read about George Doig’s pedigree, it is no surprise that he turned out to be the champion player and renowned gentleman that he was. His father, Charles Alexander Doig, was one of five brothers who played for East Fremantle Football Club. Charles Doig not only played in 11 grand finals for East Fremantle, but also served as president of the club from 1924 to 1936. One of George’s uncles, James Alexander Doig, also represented Western Australia in its first interstate match in 1904. However, in this family of football legends - and the word “legend” is not used lightly - George Doig managed to rise to an even higher plane with his on-field exploits. In fact, these days the term “superstar” would be an insult to him. Such were his youthful talents that in one game, while playing in the South Suburban Football Association competition in 1931, he kicked his team’s entire score of 26 goals 21 points, a feat that I believe can only be described as astonishing. Not long after, and not surprisingly, East Fremantle recruited him. It is well documented that he kicked nine goals in his first match, and things just got better.
