Antarctica, South Georgia & the Falkland Islands January 5 - 26, 2017 ARGENTINA Saunders Island Fortuna Bay Steeple Jason Island Stromness Bay Grytviken Tierra del Fuego FALKLAND SOUTH Gold Harbour ISLANDS GEORGIA CHILE SCOTIA SEA Drygalski Fjord Ushuaia Elephant Island DRAKE Livingston Island Deception PASSAGE Island LEMAIRE CHANNEL Cuverville Island ANTARCTIC PENINSULA Friday & Saturday, January 6 & 7, 2017 Ushuaia, Argentina / Beagle Channel / Embark Ocean Diamond Ushuaia, ‘Fin del Mundo,’ at the southernmost tip of Argentina was where we gathered for the start of our Antarctic adventure, and after a night’s rest, we set out on various excursions to explore the neighborhood of the end of the world. The keen birders were the first away, on their mission to the Tierra del Fuego National Park in search of the Magellanic woodpecker. They were rewarded with sightings of both male and female woodpeckers, Andean condors, flocks of Austral parakeets, and a wonderful view of an Austral pygmy owl, as well as a wide variety of other birds to check off their lists. The majority of our group went off on a catamaran tour of the Beagle Channel, where we saw South American sea lions on offshore islands before sailing on to the national park for a walk along the shore and an enjoyable Argentinian BBQ lunch. Others chose to hike in the deciduous beech forests of Reserva Natural Cerro Alarkén around the Arakur Resort & Spa. After only a few minutes of hiking, we saw an Andean condor soar above us and watched as a stunning red and black Magellanic woodpecker flew towards us and perched on the trunk of a nearby tree. -

In the Wake of Penguins
In the Wake of Penguins The route/purpose of this 5 week expedition is the extraordinary chance to see far flung corners of the South Atlantic. We will be leaving from Puerto Madryn, a coastal town in picturesque Patagonia. Our aim is to reach South Georgia, an island positioned in the South Atlantic about 800 nm to the south east of the Falklands. It is true oasis set in the chilly waters surrounding the Antarctic continent. Millions of penguins, seals and elephant seals live in this harsh environment, hundreds of miles from civilization. The expedition is a real challenge for sailors - to this day, very few have reached there. It is an incredible chance to see nature at its wildest and the remnants of the whaling industry. For seven days we will observe penguins, seals and elephant seals in their natural environment. Glaciers and icebergs will surround us as we sail, as well as derelict whaling stations and memories of some of the first Antarctic Expeditions. The next leg will take us to the Falklands where for three days we will attempt to grasp at least some of the history of these islands. The expedition will finish at the "end of the world", in Ushuaia – the capital of Tierra del Fuego. It is the most southerly situated town on Earth and the springboard to the Antarctic. 3rd November Puerto Madryn : embarkation and preparation for the expedition. 3rd – 14th November : Puerto Madryn - South Georgia Distance: 1300nm , 11 days 15th – 21st November : exploring South Georgia 7 days 22th – 30th November : South Georgia - Falklands Distance: 800nm , 9 days 1st – 7th December : Falklands - Ushuaia Distance: 350nm , 4 days 8th December : disembarkation South Georgia When looking at a satelite picture of South Georgia one visualises it as a large congregation of clouds. -
Salvesen Range Expedition 2018
SALVESEN RANGE EXPEDITION 2018 This was a ski mountaineering expedition led by Skip Novak and Stephen Venables, based on a five weeks charter aboard Pelagic Australis. Building on the success of the similar 2016 expedition we hoped to make further first ascents in the Salvesen Range. Difficult weather made that impossible. Nevertheless, we managed to repeat the ski traverse from Trolhull to St Andrew’s Bay, while members of the boat party made other excursions ashore along the north coast. WAITING FOR THE WEATHER 14 September Willis Islands sighted at dawn. We motored through Bird Sound to Right Whale Bay, then continued to KEP, for a briefing with Paula the Government Officer, before tying up at Grytviken just after dark. 15 September A welcome ‘faff’ day during bad weather at Grytviken, sorting gear, adjusting skis and visiting the museum. Stephen Reid, the last minute recruit to the team, endeared himself by cooking an excellent cottage pie and then producing a large box of Kendal fudge and even larger bottle of Cragganmore single malt. -

Email: P.Quil [email protected] Sub-Antarctic islands have a diversity of origins in detail but most are volcanic and very young suggesting that they are short-lived and that the distribution would have been very differenta few million years ago. 'They contrast with the common tourist brochure concept of oceanic islands. As the Antarctic Plate is virtually static, the islands seldom show signs of association with long-lived linear island chains and most thus stand alone. Longer-lived islands are either on submarine plateaux or are continental remnants of the dispersion of Gondwana. The islands are classified in relation to raised sea-floor, transform fault, triple junction, subduction zone, submarine plateau, submerged continent or continental. Many are difficult of access and poorly known geologically. Their geological history controls their many other roles such as sites as observatories, or for study of colonisation, evolution and speciation rates. Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands Expedition Policy and Application Procedures Part 1 General Expedition Information Part 2 Application Requirements Part 3 Expedition Report Part 1 General Expedition Information 1.1 Introduction With the exception of GSGSSI, BAS and staff based at KEP, approved HMG staff, permitted BAS staff, officially-sponsored visitors, members of HM forces or MOD personnel on operational duty, all visitors intending to spend nights ashore on South Georgia or the South Sandwich Islands are classed as expeditions. All expeditions require a permit from the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. If the information provided in an expedition application is inaccurate or misleading, or if it later transpires that professional guides have not made every effort to take responsible care of their clients, the Commissioner reserves the right to revoke an expedition permit and or restrict the future access of individual applicants and professional guides or commercial operations. Expedition applications must be submitted to the Office of the Commissioner no later than 60 days before an expedition arrives in South Georgia (or the South Sandwich Islands) and will be assessed by a panel of experts who will advise the Commissioner on the application. In deciding whether to issue a permit, and whether any conditions should be placed on such a permit, the Commissioner will take the panels advice into account. From 1 July 2010 an administrative fee of £1,000 will be charged for the assessment and permitting procedure. In addition to the information contained in this document, all applicants must be fully appraised of the most recent version of the “Information for Visitors to South Georgia” booklet, which includes the South Georgia Tourism Management Policy document. -

Hunterian Museum, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G12 8QQ, UK Synopsis David Ferguson’s mineral prospecting expeditions to South Georgia (1912), the Falkland Islands and the South Shetland Islands (1913-1914), on behalf of the Christian Salvesen whaling company of Leith and now largely forgotten, were early examples of commercially motivated terrestrial exploration in the South Atlantic region. Prior geological knowledge was very limited and Ferguson complemented his unsuccessful prospecting work with attempts to understand the regional geology of the areas that he visited. These interpretations were based on relatively cursory field work undertaken in an arduous environment, and did not prove robust; but the well- documented specimen collections that Ferguson accumulated provided the basis for excellent and much-cited petrographical accounts by G.W. Tyrrell of Glasgow University. Ferguson had studied geology at the university and the influence of his mentor there, Professor J.W. Gregory, is apparent. In turn, Gregory utilised Ferguson’s observations in support of a subsided ‘South Atlantic continent’, opposing the ‘displacement hypothesis’ for that region formalised by Alfred Wegener from 1912 onwards. Ferguson’s field notebooks and most of his rock specimens are now 1 held by Glasgow University (Archive Services and Hunterian Museum respectively) but he distributed representative specimen collections widely, and these are extant in several other British museums. -
