Players Biel International Chess Festival
2009 Players Biel International Chess Festival Players Boris Gelfand Israel, 41 yo Elo: 2755 World ranking: 9 Date and place of birth: 24.6.1968, in Minsk (Belarus) Lives in: Rishon-le-Zion (Israel) Israel ranking: 1 Best world ranking: 3 (January 1991) In Biel GMT: winner in 1993 (Interzonal) and 2005. Other results: 3rd (1995, 1997, 2001), 4th (2000) Two Decades at the Top of Chess This is not a comeback, since Boris Gelfand never left the chess elite in the last twenty years. However, at the age of 41, the Israeli player has reached a new peak and is experiencing a a third wind. He is back in the world Top-10, officially as number 9 (in fact, a virtual number 5, if one takes into account his latest results that have not yet been recorded). He had not been ranked so high since 2006. Age does not seem to matter for this player who is unanimously appreciated in the field, both for his technical prowess and his personality. In Biel, he will not only be the senior player of the Grandmaster tournament, but also the top ranked and the Festival’s most loyal participant. Since his first appearance in 1993, he has come seven times to Biel; it is precisely at this Festival that he earned one of his greatest victories: in 1993, he finished first in the Interzonal Tournament (which, by then, was the only qualifying competition for the world championship), out of 73 participating grandmasters (including Anand and Kramnik). His victory in Biel against Anand is mentioned in his book, My Most Memorable Games. -
Spieler Alexander Morozevich
Joueurs Biel International Chess Festival

GM Kjetil Lie put the Norwegians ahead with the kind of robust aggression typical of his best form on board four, and the teams traded wins on boards two and three. All eyes were fixed on the Caruana-Carlsen clash, where Magnus presumably pulled off an opening surprise by adopting the offbeat variation that he himself had faced as White against Nikola Djukic of Montenegro in round three. By GM Jonathan Tisdall Caruana appeared to gain a small but comfortable Caruana is number 3 in the world and someone advantage in a queenless middlegame, but as I've lost against a few times, so it feels incredibly Carlsen has shown so many times before, the good to beat him. quieter the position, the deadlier he is. Hans Olav Lahlums Generelle Forhndsomtale Av Eliteklassen 2005
Each edition has been bigger and better than Jun 23 the last one. This one is no different - starting and finishing with annotated games. It is a reflection of the hard work of Jun 30 Lightning the committee and the members of the club. On a personal basis, it has been incredibly fulfilling to have Jul 7 to Masters and Challengers contributed towards the growth of the club through this Sep 8 little newsletter. The readership has grown to the point whereby Noble Park Chess Club has had to increase the Jul 14 Lightning bandwidth of our club website. Very, very exciting... I’ve appreciated the many words of encouragement from Sep 15 Open Day club members and readers of the newsletter. However, all good things must come to an end. This will be my last newsletter as editor. Work and family commitments Sep 22-23 Noble Park Classic preclude me from being able to put aside the necessary time to support this activity. Nakamura Stands Alone
Monday 22 January - Thursday 1 February 2018 Round 5 Report: Saturday 27 January 2018 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) Nakamura Stands Alone Hikaru Nakamura remains out on his own with 5/5 after the Saturday play in the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters. The number of his immediate pursuers has now been whittled down to two after David Howell beat Rasmus Svane and Mikhail Antipov beat Emil Sutovsky with Black. So the leading scores are Nakamura 5, Howell, Antipov 4½, with 20 players on 4, including MVL, Rapport, Ivanchuk, Navara, Vitiugov, Wang Hao amongst the 2700+ rated players, and Nino Batsiashvili and Ju Wenjun also on 4, leading the race for the top women's prize. Nakamura played positively for a result with the black pieces against Jan-Krzysztof Duda, choosing the combative Dragon Variation. A long slab of theory ensued, and the Polish GM had probably done enough for a draw when he played carelessly and allowed the American some forceful queenside play. It was invitation enough for the American to go on the offensive and bamboozle his opponent. Tradewise Gibraltar Masters, Round 5, 27.01.2018 J-K.Duda (2724) - H.Nakamura 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.f3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.0-0-0 d5 10.Qe1 e5 11.Nxc6 bxc6 12.exd5 Nxd5 13.Bc4 Be6 14.Kb1 The main line is 14.Ne4 Qc7 15.Bc5 Rfd8 16.g4, etc, but this too gets played a lot. 14...Rb8 14...Re8 was the continuation in the recent Carlsen-Jones game at Tata Steel Wijk, won by White despite blundering a piece. -

Like the two previous books, Boris and I would debate the games over Skype. I would record the conversations and continue to analyse the games on my own, to see if I found any additional details. I would then return the games to Boris, fully annotated, and he would make further corrections. We then showed many of the examples to our students, who came up with many interesting suggestions. This is the case even more so with Decision Making in Major Piece Endings, which is published simultaneously with this volume. We would like to thank our students for their contributions. The authors would also like to thank Alexander Huzman for his great contribution and discoveries. Throughout the book, including in the index, you will find him referred to either as Huzman or simply as Alex – he deserves to be mentioned twice! Alex distinctly unimpressed – St Petersburg 2018 6 Boris Gelfand – Technical Decision Making in Chess This book also includes a small collection of photos.
