No other option than to love it PV SHOWS OFF NEW FIRE ENGINES By ROB BURGESS The Daily Journal Like most journalists, I was horrified to find out earlier this week that the Pulitzer Prize- winning Albuquerque Tribune had closed its doors last Sunday after 86 years in production. The owner, E.W. Scripps, announced the closure after struggling for the last seven months to sell the paper, which had declined in circulation from 42,000 in 1988 to about 10,000 in 2008. The suit accuses the federal agency of violating federal envi- ronmental laws that require the Forest Service to draft the man- agement plans in coordination with state laws and policies. The Forest Service did not consider the environmental impacts of making more trails available to off-road vehicles and the poten- tial harm to the endangered California condor from more oil and gas exploration, the lawsuit said. The forests stretch from Big Sur on the Central Coast to the Mexican border and provide habitat for at least 31 animal species and 29 plants that are federally listed as threatened or endangered, as well as 34 sensitive animal species. In 2005 and 2006 correspondence with the resources secre- tary, the Forest Service said it would not allow road construc- tion in these areas, said state Secretary for Resources Mike Chrisman. Each of the country’s 155 national forests has its own management plan, which is periodically updated. “The letters are very specific in terms of their commitment to us that the roadless areas would remain roadless but when the management plan came -- they had not lived up to their com- mitment,” he said. “We had some meetings with them and expressed our unhappiness and displeasure and that’s why we’re doing what we’re doing today. It’s very unfortunate and in our view very unnecessary.” Conservationists cheered the lawsuit which some said amounted to Schwarzenegger standing up to President Bush. “For years President Bush has worked to chop down our National Forests, and once again Gov. Andria Abrao and Steven P. Mendoza Abrao-Mendoza Andria Abrao and Steven P. Mendoza, Jr. announce their engagement to marry on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The bride-to be is the daughter of Marla and Tony Abrao, Jr., of Richmond. She is currently attending Mendocino College. The groom-to-be is the son of Jackie Beck, and Leah and Steve Mendoza, of Ukiah. He is a graduate of Ukiah High School and Chico State, and is employed at Kiewit Pacific. ACHIEVER Local student studied in South Africa Abby Mulvihill, of Ukiah, spent January studying in South Africa through a special study program at Linfield College. Mulvihill, a sophomore majoring in political science, is the daughter of Rick and Paddy Mulvihill of Ukiah. At Linfield, she is a member of the SPURS honorary. Mulvihill took the class ‘Post-Apartheid Developmental and Environmental Economics of South Africa.’ Students studied how Apartheid-era education, labor and natural resource use policies continue to affect the nation’s economic development and what steps are being utilized to develop the nation’s econ- omy beyond the white minority. Particular attention was paid to how post-Apartheid changes in resource allocation and envi- ronmental quality policies affect regional economic develop- ment for historically disadvantaged groups. Mulvihill was one of 172 students participating in on-site study programs through Linfield College’s January Term, a four-week period of concentrated study in which students enroll in one course. January Term offers students and faculty the opportunity to focus their time and attention on a single course, either on cam- pus or at off-campus locations in this country or abroad. The program is designed to help develop global awareness and insights into major issues of the times as well as to broad- en understanding of American society. Thirteen courses were offered this year and included inter- national sites in Australia, China, Great Britain, Ecuador, Guatemala, Russia, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Tunisia, Ghana, South Africa, Vietnam and Thailand. Within the United States, students also studied in Oregon.
