Das formidable amerikanische Musikerkollektiv Snarky Puppy um Bandleader Michael League machte auf seiner Tour im letzten Jahr ebenfalls in der altehrwürdigen Veranstaltungsstätte in London Halt. Bei diesem Livealbum stand logischerweise der Fokus auf dem letzten Studioalbum „Immigrance„, welches gleich mit sechs Songs vertreten ist. Die Setlist fokussiert sich trotz der inzwischen recht umfangreichen Diskografie der Amerikaner neben dem Material von ‚Immigrance‘ lediglich auf weiteres Material aus den Alben „We Like It Here“ (2014), „Culcha Vulcha“ (2016), sowie überraschenderweise zwei Songs aus der wesentlich jazzigeren Frühphase „The World Is Getting Smaller“ (2007), die aber wesentlich luftiger und dem sonstigen Material angepasst daherkommen. Warum sich Snarky Puppy über die Jahre mittlerweile eine recht breite, teils altersmäßig sehr junge Fanbasis erspielt haben, liegt vor allem im differenzierten Stilmix begründet, der sich eben recht weit außerhalb des reinen Jazz bzw. Jazz Rocks bewegt. Da sind Elemente aus Rock, Funk, R&B, Soul, Latin, Electronic oder World Music zu vernehmen, zudem vorangetrieben durch feingliedrige, mitreißende Rhythmik und sehr lässiges Feeling. Die sehr große Besetzung versteht sich immer als Einheit und z.B. trotz der vierfachen(!) Keyboardpower wirkt hier nichts überladen, sondern immer exakt auf den Punkt gebracht. Zudem gelingt es, moderne Klangästhetik mit herrlich analogen Sounds aus den Keyboardburgen zu vereinen, die bisweilen durch messerscharfe Bläsersätze gewürzt werden. Die Band interpretiert das Songmaterial im Vergleich zu den Ursprungsversionen keineswegs anders oder bricht die Songstrukturen komplett auf, dafür werden jedoch die Soloparts beliebig verändert bzw.

Mission aussi complexe que passionnante, tant cette musique a su évoluer, se ramifier, s'étendre, se distendre… disparaitre ou renaitre. Certes la tentation de laisser la place sur scène aux mêmes figures emblématiques de cette musique d'année en année est facile, mais nous voulions partir à la recherche des nouvelles générations, nous voulions imposer de nouveaux maîtres, reconnaître de nouveaux disciples. Cette année, presque 90% de notre programmation est tournée vers la musique de Django Reinhardt et ses descendances… Ils ont pour noms Gwen Cahue, Gismo Graff, Levis Adel, Daisy Castro… vous ne le connaissez pas encore, pourtant vous allez les adorer. Ils sont jeunes, très jeunes. Ils portent la tradition et l'avenir de cette musique et notre festival leur ouvre grand les portes. Nous devions aussi célébrer les nouveaux jeunes maîtres, fêter Gonzalo Bergara, passer quelques jours avec Adrien Moignard ou Rocky Gresset et découvrir Gilad Hekselman. Nous devions réunir à nouveau la famille de Thomas Dutronc à "l'américaine » et Cyrille Aimé qui se produit enfin sur sa scène… Accueillir pour la première fois l'un des mythes vivants de la guitare jazz Pat Metheny. Vibrer sur les nouveaux talents du jazz que sont Eli Degibri ou le collectif de Michael Leage, Snarky Puppy… fêter les 25 ans des authentiques Gipsy Kings, remercier une création exclusive pour Samois, Romané Chavé et enfin réunir tous les peuples de Django sous la même étoile, celle du swing, de l'espoir et de la fête.

    Michael League, a modern american bass player, guitar player, label owner, composer, and band leader for the band Snarky Puppy1 was born into a musical family in Long Beach, California on April 24, 1984. His mother was a classical flautist and his father enjoyed listening to classic rock.2 Because his parents were in the military they could never stay in one place long so he spent most of his youth in southern Alabama and northern Virginia.3 His love for music started when he started taking drumming lessons for a short time then he and started playing violin for his school band. By age 13 he was set on playing guitar. His older brother who was a drummer suggested that he started playing jazz so he did. When he got to high school he started his own jazz-funk band. When he was a senior in high school his band director asked if he would play the bass guitar in the senior Jazz band instead of the guitar. He remembers the first night when he took the instrument home he said, “I fell totally in love with it.” After his last year of high school he applied for a guitar scholarship. He was later turned down for his scholarship because of post 9/11 budget cuts. Eventually he applied to the University of North Texas as a bassist and he was accepted! In his first year of college he called up nine of his classmates and asked if they might want to start jamming. They all said yes. In jam sessions Michael would often show off the band pieces that he had wrote.
