Here I will acknowledge just a few of those who helped make this dissertation what it is, though of course I take full credit for all of its failings. I first got interested in India as a religion major at Bryn Mawr College (and Haverford) and classes I took with two wonderful men who ended up advising my undergraduate thesis on the epic Ramayana: Michael Sells and Steven Hopkins. Dr. Sells introduced me to Wendy Doniger’s work, and like so many others, I went to the University of Chicago Divinity School to study with her, and her warmth compensated for the Chicago cold. -

Padilla, PhD Frank Scheide, PhD Committee Member Committee Member Abstract This project analyzes adaptation in the Hindi film industry and how the concepts of gender and identity have changed from the original text to the contemporary adaptation. The original texts include religious epics, Shakespeare’s plays, Bengali novels which were written pre- independence, and Hollywood films. This venture uses adaptation theory as well as postmodernist and postcolonial theories to examine how women and men are represented in the adaptations as well as how contemporary audience expectations help to create the identity of the characters in the films. -

AuIvrO ABF^OJOILD 3.1 Evolution of Film Industry in the Western Countries: Decline of feudal society that accompanied the Industrial Revolution had created a vacuum in the social and cultural life of man in the Western society. However, the parallel revolution in the field of communications could fill this vacuum by introducing the mass media like films. "• Unlike the telephone, telegraph or even wireless, the invention of film can not be attributed to any single inventor. It depended upon a whole series of small inventions by different inventors. In the U.S.A, Thomas Edison invented what he called 'Kinetoscope'.= In England, William Kennedy Laurie Dickson was the chief experimenter who demonstrated a crude system of projection as early as in 1889. The Kinetoscope inspired a number of European and American inventors to apply their talents to further improve the technique of making and projecting a film. The solution to the important problem of projecting a film for a large audience was not saught by Edison. To him, his Kinetoscope was a Peep-Show box for individual viewing. However, Lumiere Brothers in France introduced their cinematographic machine and arranged the first public show of a film on a cold 34 December night in 1895. •= This show held at the Grand Cafe m Pans was followed by similar shows all over the world including India. Economically, the Cinematographe of Lumiere which could make projection possible for large audience had far reaching implications. -

But like most great institutions of higher learning, Northeastern had modest origins. At the end of the nineteenth century, immigrants and first-generation Americans constituted more than half of Boston’s population. Chief among the city’s institutions committed to helping these people improve their lives was the Boston YMCA. The YMCA became a place where young men gathered to hear lectures on literature, history, music, and other subjects considered essential to intellectual growth. In response to the enthusiastic demand for these lectures, the directors of the YMCA organized the “Evening Institute for Young Men” in May 1896. Frank Palmer Speare, a well- known teacher and high-school principal with considerable experience in the public schools, was hired as the institute’s director. -

Ashoke Kumar The boss's wife and leading actress of a leading Film Company runs off with her lead man. She is caught and taken back but not the lead man who is unceremoniously dismissed. So now the company needs a new hero. The boss decides his laboratory assistant would be the Film Company's next leading man. A bizzare film plot??? Hardly. This real life story starred the Bombay Talkies Film Company, it's boss Himansu Rai , lead actress Devika Rani and lead man Najam-ul-Hussain and last but not least its laboratory assistant Ashok Kumar. And thus began an extremely successful acting career that lasted six decades! Ashok Kumar aka Dadamoni was born Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly in Bhagalpur and grew up in Khandwa. He briefly studied law in Calcutta, then joined his future brother-in-law Shashadhar Mukherjee at Bombay Talkies as laboratory assistant before being made its leading man. Ashok Kumar made his debut opposite Devika Rani in Jeevan Naiya (1936) but became a well known face with Achut Kanya (1936) . Devika Rani and he did a string of films together - Izzat (1937) , Savitri (1937) , Nirmala (1938) among others but she was the bigger star and chief attraction in all those films. It was with his trio of hits opposite Leela Chitnis - Kangan (1939) , Bandhan (1940) and Jhoola (1941) that Ashok Kumar really came into his own. Going with the trend he sang his own songs and some of them like Main Ban ki Chidiya , Chal Chal re Naujawaan and Na Jaane Kidhar Aaj Meri Nao Chali Re were extremely popular! Ashok Kumar initiated a more natural style of acting compared to the prevaling style that followed theatrical trends. -

While this may have been true for The the 1980s, when the study of Indian cinema began to grow, the present cinema audiences, who are willing to pay Rs. 200 and upwards for a cinema ticket, are from various sections of the Indian middle classes and elites. These classes now dominate the public sphere in India and film is one of the major media which they are producing and consuming. -

Vasudevan1 Abstract This article explores the phenomenon of the Muslim social film and “Islamicate” cinema of pre-Partition India to suggest a significant background to cinema’s function in the emergence of new states. In particu- lar, it seeks to provide an account of how discussions of genre and generic difference framed issues of audience and identity in the studio period of Indian film, broadly between the mid-1930s and mid-1940s. Rather than focus too narrowly on identity discourses in the cinema, I try to move among amorphous and dispersed senses of audience, more calibrated understandings related to a trade discourse of who films would appeal to, and finally, an agenda of social representation and audience address that sought to develop in step with a secular nationalist imagining of the Muslim community and its transformation.
