Ritualistic Remembrance Films and TV-series about resistance during World War Two and the construction of Norwegian identity Håvard Rustad Markussen Master’s thesis at the Department of Political Science UNIVERSITY OF OSLO 23.05.2017 Number of words: 44 211 !I !II Ritualistic Remembrance Films and TV-series about resistance during World War Two and the construction of Norwegian identity !III © Håvard Rustad Markussen 2017 Ritualistic Remembrance - Films and TV-series about resistance during World War Two and the construction of Norwegian identity Håvard Rustad Markussen http://www.duo.uio.no Trykk: CopyCat !IV Abstract In this thesis, I apply insights from collective memory studies to poststructuralist IR in order to enhance understanding of how popular culture operates in processes of discursive identity construction. More specifically, I rely on Grant David Bollmer’s (2011) argument that repetition is key when attempting to keep certain memories from being forgotten. Using this theoretical framework, I analyze the following four films and TV-series on Norwegian resistance during World War Two as rituals of embodied movement: Operation Swallow: The Battle for Heavy Water (1948), Nine Lives (1957), Max Manus (2008) and The Heavy Water War (2015). The analysis demonstrates how these films and TV-series in large part reproduce and naturalize dominant representations of Norwegian identity by keeping certain memories of World War Two in Norway actualized. They represent wartime resistance and Norwegian identity along four main lines. These are: Norway as important for the outcome of the war, Norway as ‘not’ Germany, Norway as rural in its essence and Norway as cold hardy and beautiful.

KAMPEN OM TUNGTVANNET | THE HEAVY WATER WAR Director: Per Olav Sørensen Country: Norway, Great Britain, Germany Year: 2015 IMDB link: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3280150/ Film homepage: Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Us4rh3Lj8s Available on: Amazon Prime, Netflix Introduction: Introduction: During WWII, while Norway is under Nazi occupation, British intelligence learns that German physicist Werner Heisenberg is in need of heavy water for the development of the atom bomb. The only facility in the world producing heavy water is attached to the Norsk Hydro plant in Rjukan, Norway. The Brits recruit members of the Norwegian resistance to carry out a bold plan to destroy the plant. The series follows the multiple story lines: the efforts in Germany, spearheaded by Heisenberg, to develop the bomb; the efforts of the British to recruit and train the crew of Norwegians that will carry out the mission; the interaction between the director of the Norsk Hydro plant, Bjørn Henriksen and Nazi command, and the Norwegian saboteurs themselves, hiding out in a cabin on Norway’s frozen Hardanger plateau. Discussion questions: What was Werner Heisenberg’s motivation for initially taking on the project of developing an atomic bomb? What is heavy water and why did Heisenberg need it? Why did Heisenberg share his plans with the physicist Nils Bohr? What options did Norsk Hydro director Bjørn Henriksen have when he was approached by German authorities about supplying them with large quantities of heavy water and why did he ultimately

WITH A NUCLEAR WEAPON HITLER WOULD HAVE WON THE WAR DIRECTED BY PER-OLAV SØRENSEN TV SERIES 6x45 MIN 2 THE HEAVY WATER WAR A six-part dramatization of one of the most exciting stories from the Second World War - the Nazis’ efforts to develop an atom bomb and the Allies’ desperate struggle to prevent it from happening. The series starts in Stockholm in 1933 when German scientist Werner Heisenberg is awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics and is congratulated by his mentor Niels Bohr – a previous Nobel Prize winner. One of the dramatic high points is the daring sabotage mission to blow up the heavy water factory in the Norwegian mountains in 1943. Leading English, Norwegian and German actors portray real life characters and we get to understand their dilemmas and challenges in this epic story, the outcome of which will determine the future of democracy. 3 4 EPISODES As scripted. The edited episodes may vary in content. EPISODE 1 Brilliant German scientist and Nobel Prize winner Werner Heisenberg is accused by the new Nazi regime of being politically “unreliable”. He is about to lose his University position, but when his mother appeals to the mother of SS leader Heinrich Himmler, he is allowed into Uranverein, the secret Nazi nuclear energy project. Heisenberg believes heavy water is needed to control the chain reaction. This component only exists at Norsk Hydro’s factory in Rjukan, Norway. The Second World War has now broken out. As a former scientist at Rjukan, Norwegian professor and reserve officer Leif Tronstad suspects the German motive for their heavy water order.

Annual Report 2015 -Knowledge when it matters Kunnskap når det gjelder Concrete in seawater Foto: Aage Hoiem, NTNU The Library's main task is to support NTNU's education and research by providing good services directly to the individual student and the individual researcher. The physical libraries are primarily geared towards students' needs for work spaces and a good lear- ning environment, and are therefore situated with good locations on every campus. Physical libraries must be further developed into places that support learning processes with flexible student workstations in collaboration with the University’s study support services and IT. An example of this kind of successful cooperation is Orakel Support Services (Orakeltjenesten), which is operated by NTNU IT, but located in the The traditional library will go on to become a centre for knowledge and learning. Libraries will continue to be places for knowledge and learning, but the library’s physical space will be used in new ways. There will be a clearer goal of supporting and facilitating different types of learning and working. To achieve this, knowledge and learning centres must become multifunctional spaces. NTNU knowledge and learning centres will be social meeting places, have space for different types of student services and study support, and good access to IT services: software, computers and multimedia technology. There will be varied reading rooms and workspaces for students, including large and small seminar rooms. In addition to traditional library services, there will be help available for academic writing and guidance in the critical evaluation of digital information resources and sources. In a centre like this, the boundaries between the library, study support services, social meeting places and IT will be erased.
