World-Class Electronic Music at Flow's Resident Advisor Front Yard
Press release. Free for publication March 22nd 2018, 11:30 EET World-class electronic music at Flow's Resident Advisor Front Yard Flow Festival is known for its stellar electronic music offering, and this year the audience gets to enjoy it at the Resident Advisor Front Yard, among other venues. Come August, Helena Hauff, Moodymann, Gerd Janson, Young Marco, Yaeji, Sammy Dee & Zip, Sonja Moonear and many others will take the stage at Flow. Flow Festival debuted the very popular Resident Advisor Front Yard at last year's festival. This year the stage is back and the cooperation with Resident Advisor, the world's num- ber one online media for electronic music, continues. The area's stripped down industrial atmosphere with its cargo container structures combined with a park-like greenery and gorgeous light design creates an amazing setting for enjoying the club sounds. On Friday Resident Advisor Front Yard will host Sammy Dee and Zip, two legendary Ger- man DJs playing together, Swiss top DJ Sonja Moonear, Finnish electro's ultimate cult duo Imatran Voima's 20th anniversary live performance, Amsterdam-based Young Marco with his original, obscure and fascinating record finds, and Korean-born, but Berlin-based house and techno sensation Peggy Gou. On Saturday, the Resident Advisor stage will be taken over by e.g. Helena Hauff, who reached the top spot on Crack Magazine's TOP 50 DJ list, Detroit In Effect with his Miami bass, techno and hip hop inspired set, as well as Veronica Vasicka, who personifies Mini- mal Wave, the style and the record company. -
BBC Four Programme Information
SOUND OF CINEMA: THE MUSIC THAT MADE THE MOVIES BBC Four Programme Information Neil Brand presenter and composer said, “It's so fantastic that the BBC, the biggest producer of music content, is showing how music works for films this autumn with Sound of Cinema. Film scores demand an extraordinary degree of both musicianship and dramatic understanding on the part of their composers. Whilst creating potent, original music to synchronise exactly with the images, composers are also making that music as discreet, accessible and communicative as possible, so that it can speak to each and every one of us. Film music demands the highest standards of its composers, the insight to 'see' what is needed and come up with something new and original. With my series and the other content across the BBC’s Sound of Cinema season I hope that people will hear more in their movies than they ever thought possible.” Part 1: The Big Score In the first episode of a new series celebrating film music for BBC Four as part of a wider Sound of Cinema Season on the BBC, Neil Brand explores how the classic orchestral film score emerged and why it’s still going strong today. Neil begins by analysing John Barry's title music for the 1965 thriller The Ipcress File. Demonstrating how Barry incorporated the sounds of east European instruments and even a coffee grinder to capture a down at heel Cold War feel, Neil highlights how a great composer can add a whole new dimension to film. Music has been inextricably linked with cinema even since the days of the "silent era", when movie houses employed accompanists ranging from pianists to small orchestras. -

Musician Neneh Cherry on Addressing Politics in Your Art
October 29, 2018 - As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2891 words. Tags: Music, Politics, Process, Collaboration. On addressing politics in your art Musician Neneh Cherry on what makes a good a collaborator, the headspace required for making thoughtful art, and why sometimes being quiet is a radical act. What’s the kind of headspace you need to be in when you’re working on music? It’s somewhat different every time, but recently I had a place that I wanted to go in my spirit and soul, through the songs and with the songs. I knew it was going to need me to be in a more… not a static place, exactly, but a more still place. It was almost like I could feel the songs around my head. Of course, the collaborative journey played an important part in actually reaching the goal. In the case of Broken Politics, I think we reached the goal I had in mind. I work with Cameron McVey, who is my husband and my creative partner, beyond just the spousal stuff. We’ve also had a very intimate creative journey. Quite often we’re working with other programmers and musicians when we’re writing, so there are all of these different things to figure out and negotiate. He’s a really fast writer. I’m a much slower writer. A lot of the time we’re in the studio by ourselves, each working at our own pace. Sometimes, even when you have an idea of where you want to go, it’s still a struggle getting there and getting past all the little weird obstacle courses that your brain sets up for you in order to get to that place where you’re creatively open. -
Hyperdub's Kode9 & the Spaceape Have Left Tired
With their new album ‘Black Sun’, Hyperdub’s Kode9 & the Spaceape have left tired genre pigeonholes behind, switched up their sound and conjured a bright, neon-lit sci-fi parable of futuristic house, fractured breakbeats, cryptic poetry and bleeps, where nothing is as it seems. Infl uenced by JG Ballard, Solaris, UK funky, THX1138 and Prince Far-I, it’s a dystopian funk epic that should see them reach a whole new audience. DJmag fi nds out more… Words: BEN MURPHY cience fi ction and electronic changed, became something other but still enabled through a gauze of Kode9’s gloopy, buzzing music have a chequered life, what would that be like?” wonders Spaceape. computerfunk, living colours that stretch through history together. James Holden's New Live Touring Incarnation (In Support of Holden's 2013 Album 'The Inheritors')
RocketNumberNine biography In the two years that have elapsed since the 2013 release of their second RocketNumberNine album 'MeYouWeYou', London-born brothers Ben and Tom Page have found themselves much in demand, to the point where their original RocketNumberNine pet project has had to take something of a back seat. A hook up with Smalltown Supersound labelmate and Swedish singing superheroine Neneh Cherry saw the Page siblings drafted in to provide the synth and drum complement to her Kieran Hebden-produced 'Blank Project' album in early 2014, leading on to RocketNumberNine's permanent installation as her backing band on the subsequent Neneh Cherry tour. And not content with one round the world trip, younger brother Tom has somehow also found the time to moonlight as drummer for modular synth maestro James Holden's new live touring incarnation (in support of Holden's 2013 album 'The Inheritors'). But now, as one set of touring cycles near their natural end, and with a crisp new RocketNumberNine 12” poised to emerge on Holden's Border Community label in the Autumn of 2015, the time has come for the brothers to refocus their attention on the symbiotic RocketNumberNine improvisational partnership where it all began. Growing up together in Chingford in the North Eastern outskirts of London, nestled just inside the M25, it was eight years ago that brothers Ben and Tom Page first formalised their musical union as synth-and- drum improv duo RocketNumberNine. But their dedication to one another runs way deeper than most siblings, having also lived together for most of their adult lives, including a spell together in a musical commune near Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland.
