Patzwall, ISBN X. Januar bis 9. Categories :. The details of his novels and semi-fictional accounts was accurate regarding minor technical details, but their content was often inauthentic and withheld important contextual information from the reader. Antisemitism , German war crimes , the repressive nature of the German government, and the causes of the war were not mentioned. Historians Ronald Smelser and Edward J. Davies , in their work The Myth of the Eastern Front , characterise Kurowski as one of the principal Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS "gurus", or authors popular among the readers who romanticize the German war effort on the Eastern Front, and in particular the Waffen-SS, alongside authors such as Richard Landwehr , an ardent admirer of the Waffen-SS, and the far-right writer and publisher Patrick Agte. Kurowski's works were published in Germany since , but remained inaccessible to English-speaking audiences. Fedorowicz Publishing , whom Smelser and Davies describe as a leading publisher of war-romancing literature, released Kurowski's two popular works, Panzer Aces and Infantry Aces , in the U. Kurowski gives the readers an almost heroic version of the German soldier, guiltless of any war crimes, actually incapable of such behavior. Sacrifice and humility are his hallmarks. Their actions win them medals, badges and promotions, yet they remain indifferent to these awards. The cover art evokes heroism, determination and might of the German soldier and his weapons. Kurowski produced numerous books featuring highly decorated personnel of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, including Luftwaffe pilots and U-boat commanders of Nazi Germany's navy the Kriegsmarine. Many of these were reprinted in the —s by the German publisher Flechsig Verlag. Kurowski wrote extensively about successful U-boat commanders, "U-boat aces" in his terminology, including Helmut Witte , Johann Mohr , and Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock. Der Einsatz der deutschen U-Boote im Mittelmeer Gray Wolves in Blue Sea: Deployment of the German U-boats in the Mediterranean ; according to the preface to this semi-fictional account, the book described the war "as it actually happened". The concepts of war are described in the terms of Nazi wartime propaganda, such as 'drama', 'tragedy' and 'fate' direct quotes from Gray Wolves. This not only has a war-trivialising effect, but also shows war as a desirable state". The "divine principle of war as a duty" and a "natural event" is a hallmark of such works, Wilking concludes. Afterwards, Kurowski was among the authors who held on to the details of the Nazi propaganda regardless of Rohwer's research results. For the series, Kurowski was listed as editorial staff. The series was reissued by Flechsig Verlag in the s under Kurowski's name. The term "war criminals" appears only in quotation marks; the "brilliant successes of the Wehrmacht" is the key theme, along with the "victimhood" and "downfall of German soldiers". Kurowski wrote several books that discuss the February Allied air raids on Dresden. In the context of the World War II bombing campaigns, Kurowski's interpretation of the air war and the Dresden raid hued closely to the account offered by Hans Rumpf, the German fire protection inspector during World War II and postwar author. Both Rumpf and Kurowski used the term "terror-bombing" exclusively to describe Allied air attacks, and presented the Luftwaffe raids against purely civilian targets as "retaliation attacks". In his writings, Kurowski emphasised that the Allied propaganda "hugely exaggerated" the effects of these raids. The Dutch historian Bastiaan Robert von Benda-Beckmann includes Kurowski in his discussion of the German historiography of the Allied bombing campaign. Similar to Irving, these authors were growing "more radical and determined in their beliefs"; they condemned the Allies as "brutal mass murderers". Fuller 's theory that the air raid on Dresden was a planned programme of genocide. Fuller, retired since , was a supporter of Oswald Mosley , founder of the British Union of Fascists. Kurowski's books use long-refuted numbers and statements, some of which date back to declarations from the Reich Propaganda Ministry. Bombs over Dresden included sixteen pages of supposed eyewitness reports long since identified as invented of low-flying aircraft hunting civilians, as German authors Lars-Broder Keil and Sven Felix Kellerhoff point out in their book Deutsche Legenden German Legends. Keil and Kellerhoff also criticise his use of a statistic of 60, victims that was allegedly provided by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany. Such official calculations, as described by Kurowski, did not exist. Kurowski started with a higher claimed number of casualties. In a article in the German periodical Die Welt , Kellerhoff referred to Kurowski's claims of , dead, allegedly from the Red Cross. Kellerhoff included Kurowski in the list of authors who provided highly exaggerated numbers, such as Fuller, who claimed the figure of half a million dead, and the German right- wing extremist and Holocaust denier Manfred Roeder , who gave the number of , dead. Kurowski's Bombs over Dresden reproduced the numbers of , dead, first released by the Propaganda Ministry on February 25, ; the undisclosed official German estimate at the time was 20, dead. This latter number became public in , and the widespread exaggerations have long been refuted. Kurowski's works strive to provide an experience of the war "as it happened", but his writing style often leads to embellishments and half-truths. Kurowski frequently mixes fact and fiction in his accounts, providing a distorted image of the German military and advancing the post-war concept of Nur-Soldat "merely soldier". The SS was more aware of and attuned to the German propaganda ministry, and as such its achievements were highly touted. Waffen SS units routinely provided the propaganda apparatus with exaggerated reports of battles and casualty figures of the enemy to help boost morale in Germany, especially as the Soviet resistance intensified and the cost in German lives increased. Propaganda units traveled with and operated with the SS. On April 10, Czech authorities confirmed that Knispel's remains were found among 15 other German soldiers behind a church wall in Urbau. He was identified by his dog tag. He fought in virtually every type of German tank as loader, gunner and commander. He was awarded the Iron Cross , First Class, after destroying his fiftieth enemy tank and the Tank Assault Badge in Gold after more than tank battles. When Knispel had destroyed enemy tanks with another 20 unconfirmed kills , he was awarded the German Cross in Gold. He became the only non-commissioned officer of the German tank arm to be named in a Wehrmacht communique. Though he was recommended for it four times, Knispel never received the coveted Knight's Cross, a standard award for most other World War II German tank aces. Unlike some other commanders, Knispel was not consumed by the pursuit of decorations and did not suffer from a "sore throat", Heer slang for those who lusted after the Knight's Cross.

Sanders, Dean of Graduate Studies Date ABSTRACT In this thesis the researcher discusses the implementation of force multipliers in the Prussian and German military. Originating with the wars of Frederick the Great and the geographical position of Prussia, force multipliers were key to the defense of the small state. As time continued, this tactic would become a mainstay for the Prussian military in the wars for German unification. Finally, they would be carried through to a grim conclusion with the Second World War and the belief that this tactic would easily make up for Germany’s shortcomings in material and manpower.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS ///DECIPHERED///LIMITED ACCESS////CCNI COMMENTARY 1939-1941 Call it “the onslaught,” the two triumphant years with which the German armed forces (the Wehrmacht) opened World War II. During this period, the Germans reeled off one decisive victory after another, a run quite unlike anything in recent memory. With its tank (panzer) formations operating as an apparently irresistible spearhead, and with a powerful air force (Luftwaffe) circling overhead, the Wehrmacht smashed every defensive position thrown in its path. The world called it blitzkrieg, or “l lightning war,” but that was a term the Germans themselves never used in any formal sense. By any name, it was impressive. The opening campaign in Poland (Case White) smashed the Polish army in eighteen days, although a bit more fighting was necessary to reduce the capital, Warsaw. Equally decisive was the simultaneous invasion of Denmark and Norway in April 1940 (code-name Weserübung). Both enemy capitals, Oslo and Copenhagen, fell on day one to a well-coordinated combination of ground forces, seaborne landings, and paratroopers. Allied formations tried to intervene, got a quick taste of the Luftwaffe, and soon evacuated under heavy fire.

FEEDING THE VOLK: FOOD, CULTURE, AND THE POLITICS OF NAZI CONSUMPTION, 1933-1945 By MARK B. COLE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2011 1 © 2011 Mark B. Cole 2 In memory of my mother 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Researching and writing a dissertation is largely a solitary endeavor, but my experience has been greatly enriched by people and institutions on both sides of the Atlantic. First and foremost I must wholeheartedly thank my Doktorvater, Geoffrey J. Giles, not simply because he had the good sense to take on a graduate student with admittedly peculiar interests (food and Nazis), but because he has been a model advisor and has always unflinchingly “mounted the barricades” on my behalf. His support has been unwavering, his advice always spot on, and his criticisms insightful. While he will always remain a mentor, I am happy to say that over the years he has also become a dear friend. I should also like to thank two other scholars. At the University of Toledo, Larry Wilcox was the first to spark my interest in German history by doing what he does best, being a fabulous teacher. And, from my very first semester as master’s student at the University of Akron to the present day, Shelley Baranowski has been a constant source of support and inspiration. It is a great personal and intellectual debt that I owe her. The University of Florida in general and the Department of History in particular provided an excellent intellectual environment for me to grow as a historian.

WOLVES WITHOUT TEETH: THE GERMAN TORPEDO CRISIS IN WORLD WAR TWO by David Habersham Wright (Under the Direction of Charles Thomas) Abstract The “Torpedo Crisis,” or “Torpedokrise” as referred to by the Germans, is the name given to the period of the first few years during the Second World War during which time the German U-boat arm experienced catastrophic technical malfunctions with their torpedoes. These malfunctions robbed the Germans of tremendous success during the most critical period of the Second World War – the opening years during which Allied anti-submarine measures were at their poorest and German prospects for success concomitantly at their greatest. By the time the Germans finally succeeded in removing all of these problems and realized the true potential of the torpedo envisioned during the prewar years, Allied anti- submarine warfare tactics and especially technology had advanced to such a degree that it could not be overcome despite the best efforts of the U-bootwaffe.

Athahn Steinback Dark Apostles – Hitler’s Oligarchs: Göring, Goebbels, Himmler, Heydrich and Revolutionary Totalitarian Oligarchy in the Third Reich By Athahn Steinback Abstract: In popular memory, the Third Reich and the Nazi party are all too often misremembered as a homogenous entity, entirely shaped and led by the figure of Adolf Hitler. This paper challenges the widely held misconception of a homogenous Nazi ideology and critically re-examines the governance of Nazi Germany by arguing that the Third Reich was not a generic totalitarian dictatorship, but rather, a revolutionary totalitarian oligarchy. The unique roles and revolutionary agendas of Hermann Göring, Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, and Reinhard Heydrich, provide case studies to demonstrate the nature of this revolutionary totalitarian oligarchy. The role of Hitler as the chief oligarch of Nazi Germany remains critical to the entire system of governance.

Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-71231-6 - The Myth of the Eastern Front: The Nazi-Soviet War in American Popular Culture Ronald Smelser and Edward J. Davies ll Excerpt More information Introduction For most Americans, the Western Front – defined as North Africa, Italy and France, and western Germany – was decisive in defeating Nazi Germany dur- ing World War Two. After all, this was the arena in which our military dom- inated in terms of manpower, material, and planning. It was the front that received the most exhaustive coverage in the media, despite thorough wartime reporting from Russia. It was from this front that the names, which would highlight our struggle, echo down through several generations – Kasserine Pass, Anzio, Normandy, Huertgen Forest, the Bulge. And it was this long series of military engagements that would figure most dramatically in postwar pre- sentations – right down to today. Television series such as Combat during the 1960s featured American soldiers defeating Germans on a weekly basis. Movies, most notably The Longest Day, Patton, and The Battle of the Bulge, reminded Americans dramatically of the triumphs of U.S. arms. A stream of books from Company Commander to Eisenhower’s Lieutenants gave the general public detailed accounts of our wartime exploits. Media fascination with World War Two gained renewed impetus in the 1990s, as we commemorated various fiftieth anniversary events. Tom Brokaw’s The Greatest Generation celebrated and romanticized in print and on television those rapidly disappearing men and women who saved the world from Hitler. Saving Private Ryan brought the same message to movie audiences and Band of Brothers continues to do so on television as we enter the twenty-first century.

  • Heldenpolitik: Ritterkreuz, Ideology and the Complexities of Hero Culture Under National Socialism
Heldenpolitik: Ritterkreuz, Ideology and the Complexities of Hero Culture under National Socialism By Colin Gilmour A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2018 Department of History and Classical Studies McGill University Montreal, Quebec ©Colin Gilmour 2018 i Abstract This dissertation explores the political history of Germany’s highest award for military excellence during the Second World War: the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross, or “Ritterkreuz.” Expanding upon a limited foundation of existing scholarly research, its primary focus is to examine the role played by this famous medal as a vessel of “symbolic capital” for the National Socialist regime. Designed not only as a tool to help forge a new archetype for military heroism, it was also to represent the “revolution” that the Party claimed to have produced in German society and politics. Using this function as a framework, the component chapters of this study document different ways in which it informed or affected official usages of the Ritterkreuz and the activities of its recipients – called “Ritterkreuzträger” – during the war years. Through this investigation, the dissertation argues that while achieving an impact on wartime culture that continues to be felt in Germany today, both medal and men proved as much a source of frustration and embarrassment to the regime as they did ideological success. As such, it challenges several existing assumptions regarding the role of orders and decorations created by National Socialism while highlighting an underrecognized layer of complexity in its “Heldenpolitik” (Hero Politics). ii Résumé Cette thèse explore l'histoire politique de la plus haute distinction militaire accordée en Allemagne durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la croix de chevalier de la croix de fer, la « Ritterkreuz ».
